The new HFP chat thread – Wednesday 12th August

We have decided to run this new daily chat thread on Head for Points.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  It is unlikely that the news flow will be so big over the next few weeks that we will need many ‘Bits’ articles, however.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are stuck at home self-isolating, we want the HFP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as its keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HFP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/08/12/the-new-hfp-chat-thread-wednesday-12th-august/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HFP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

  • Simon Lark says:

If I downgrade from the BAPP Amex card to the free BA Amex card, if I have pending transactions on the card , once posted will I get 1.5 per £1 or 1 point per £1 for the transactions ? Also will my saved offers on my card transfer over , such as the Tesco / marks offer , shop small etc

    • TGLoyalty says:

Wait for the transactions to post as from experience you’ll get the rate for the card you hold at the time not what you used to hold.

      Offers transfer over

      • Simon Lark says:

Great , do you have to wait for a new card to come or can u still use the original BAPP card whilst they send you the new card

        • TGLoyalty says:

Your old card becomes the new card pretty soon after and you can continue spending.

  • Waddle says:

Email from Amex on Plat insurance. Now covers pre-existing medical conditions and expanded some sports cover. Haven’t read fine details yet.

    • Lady London says:

Amex must have been reading comments on here then. the insurance on the personal Platinum card has been non-competitive as they apoarently refused to accept pre-existing conditions, not even on a charged-for basis.

    • Sukes says:

I think the word to add is ‘certain’ pre-existing medical conditions, from a pre-determined list, will now be covered. if they would quote on an individual basis reasonable cover for pre-existing conditions, on top of the card fee, that would be a game changer for my family. Having looked at the list I doubt it’s a game changer for anyone.

      • mark2 says:

That is the way that the Lloyds equivalent works (also run by AXA).

      • Qwertyknowsbest says:

        +1

Gone Nationwide packaged product for insurance, much better and flexible. Even covering for countries on FCO ‘advise against all but essential travel’ list.

        Also policy wording much clearer.

    • BJ says:

Thanks, hopefully we will hear more. Since December 18 this had ruled me out of holding the platinum card long term.

    • BS says:

I am unable to see the list of allowed existing conditions…

      Anyone want to paste here?

    • DJ says:

About to cancel my Plat card this year, as there is still no ability to pay extra to cover other existing conditions.

However, the change is definitely welcomed!

      • Rob says:

Badminton is now covered, and if you’ve ever had constipation you are no longer banned from claiming for medical coverage.

        • DJ says:

Not sure if Rob was being sarcastic …

          • yorkieflyer says:

            surely not

          • Rob says:

Read the document. You were not previously covered if you hurt yourself playing badminton, and constiptation (at any point in the past) counted as a pre-existing condition for the purposes of denying you medical benefits.

        • BS says:

Now can no longer do heli-skiing.
Common (low risk) things like well controlled hypertension is not covered – this still renders this insurance useless as it wouldn’t cover heart attack/stroke etc in these individuals.

  • Anna says:

The Mirror is now reporting that BA will be offering some sort of pre-flight COVID testing, though only to destinations which require it.

    • Rob says:

So, basically, its a way for BA to make money by getting a commission from Boots for every BA passenger flying to a destination that requires a test.

  • Boi says:

    Any Lufthansa discount code?

  • YH says:

Flying out from T5 tomorrow morning.

When I flew 3 weeks ago the fast track lanes were closed, are they open now?

Also, is Galleries Club North open?

    • TGLoyalty says:

From reports still closed. I don’t see there being enough traffic to warrant them during the week.

      • mvcvz says:

I flew to VIE last Friday. Fast track lanes closed (still only took five minutes to clear) but lounges open. Extremely pleasant and efficient in there as well.

  • Jordan says:

Can anyone advise the best method for booking BA reward tickets as they become available. Is calling BA the best option? Which call centre and number do people use?
    (Sorry, I’m new to this)

    • BJ says:

You will pay a service charge to book over the phone if it can be booked online so the latter is better. Many flights currently have (much) more than the standard 2J and 4Y seats on offer so there should be no problem. Calling only becomes an issue for complex itineraries or if using amex 241 vouchers.

    • Rob says:

You need to call at 1am (as its BST at the moment). US call centre generally the easiest – you can google the numbers. Remember 2 x Club and 4 x Economy will come up for certain.

  • BS says:

Just to say: I have a PINK £50 off £250 spend offer on my gold amex.

    This triple stacks with:
    – the PINK end of season sale at £70 off
    – the flash 50% sale on business shirts only

This makes a shirt with £130 RRP be £17.50 prior to amex discount, so you could comfortably get 10 shirts for £200 if you went for some of the posher options.
    https://pinkshirtmaker.com/category/shirts/business-shirts

I bought a few of these a few years ago in the sale and was impressed, but would never consider paying full price.

    • BJ says:

Good deal, almost sorry I no longer need 10 shirts these days 🙂

    • BS says:

I do worry about their economics:
You can actually get 15 shirts for £200 if you stick to the cheapest, delivery is free, and they will gift-wrap each item for you. Either they are absolutely desperate (entirely possible), they are winding up, or they have made an error reducing the already reduced items.

      • EDA says:

What shirts are you looking at? Can’t see those prices anywhere

        • pauldb says:

Lots of shirts in the for £35 in the flash sale link, and these are then given 50% off at checkout.
