The new HFP chat thread – Monday 10th August

We have decided to run this new daily chat thread on Head for Points.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions. It is unlikely that the news flow will be so big over the next few weeks that we will need many ‘Bits’ articles, however.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind. At this tricky time, and given that many of you are stuck at home self-isolating, we want the HFP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article. This has long-term benefits as its keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

I’m going to have around a 27k CGT bill later this year once property is sold. Due to the amount I dont think there is any way of getting miles / points or anything out of it is there? Can CGT be paid off in separate transactions as long as its done within 30 days?

  Rob’s done a couple of articles on paying HMRC. I imagine as long as they get the money in the 30 day window it would be ok to do more than one payment.

  To pay CGT on a property sale you have to declare it via a special area of your Government Gateway. It’s not easy to find. HMRC create a separate CGT account for property CGT that’s distinct from your normal tax account. Your payments have to go against that reference number they create for the property you sell.
  
  You can make numerous card payments online using Curve Metal + IHG or Miles&More. HMRC email a dated receipt for your payment but it takes 3-5 days to actually display on your CGT account.
  
  The card companies can take days to record your payments to HMRC and this can be several days longer than a BACS Payment to the card to stay under your credit limit. You can end up with a running negative card balance for several days as the transactions take different elapsed times to record.

      Ha! Did the same paying self assessment, but not that many though! Those were the days.
      
      Hopefully nothings changed recently and I can use the methods Brighton Belle mentioned above.

And on a related note, I will have a very substantial Inheritance Tax bill to pay in a couple of months. Any insights as to whether I can put any of this on a card?

Anyone else tried adding on an additional cardholder on Amex in the same name to separate business and personal spend to be told it’s no longer possible? Got one a few weeks ago on my platinum card but told it’s no longer possible…. seems strange!

We booked our (club europe) Larnaca flights for a couple of weeks time, in November for 40k miles plus £50 each. Looking now in case we need to change dates and they are 53k miles plus £72.37 each. Guess we’ll have to pay the difference if we change? When did the change happen? Is this increase for all destinations? Thanks, Tracy

  You will definitely have to pay any increase, and you may also need to pay a change fee on top but I’m not 100% sure on that.

Anyone know which lounges are open at Gatwick atm? I’ve tried to book no.1 or my lounge and both say they don’t accept dragon pass, lounge club or pp?!

    I know that No1 is unhappy with what the card schemes pay, although my personal view is that these people use less. Many times I have used a lounge for 10 minutes and just had a coffee. Those who pay don’t do that.

      +1 thats my kind of visit pattern. typically half an hour, 1-2 coffees. If working, might have a snack but usually I dont have enough time before the flight leaves. I like odd bits if BA alcohol but otherwise teetotal.
      
      If No. 1 and Mylounge are banning Lounge passes, and as LGW aspire looks like hoovering up ba as well as qr to fill their lounge, that pushes me to Pret.
      
      I wonder how soon Priority Pass and Amex and any other Lounge pass provider will inform their customers of the huge loss in lounges this looks like being.

A while back there was an article about how your tier points earning has been reduced from 160 to 80 points (return) for some destinations because of the move from lgw to lhr.

But also surely it works both ways? LHR – LCA is now 2040 miles, so should be a long haul flight and earn 280 points return?

Had anyone raised this?

    Not sure if class it as an error? The flight distance now tips over the 2000 mile threshold, should it not be considered long haul and earn 140 TP each way?

      It just doesn’t have that absolute logic to it.
      LCA is 80TP and over 2000 miles from LHR or LGW. Helsinki is under 1200 miles and 80TP. The two Moscow airports are both under 1600 miles and 140TP.

      The 2000 rule only applies to partner airlines. For BA mainline BA makes its own strategic decision route by route.

Question about IHG Spire Ambassador. Do I get any breakfast, etc at Kimpton Glasgow, or does the 20 USD credit can be used for breakfast?

  breakfast is not a status benefit with IHG so yes you can use your credit for breakfast – unless of course it’s part of the rate you paid or you booked via Emyr Thomas and one of his rates (see the ‘booking’ tab just under of the site header)
