The new HFP chat thread – Monday 3rd August

We have decided to run this new daily chat thread on Head for Points.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  It is unlikely that the news flow will be so big over the next few weeks that we will need many ‘Bits’ articles, however.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are stuck at home self-isolating, we want the HFP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as its keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HFP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/08/03/the-new-hfp-chat-thread-monday-3rd-august/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HFP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

    Hi Rob,
I’m not finding an answer to my question so pls be so kind to answer,
Is there anyway to cancel an avios short haul flight for 50 pence.
The only option i’m getting is the voucher or losing all money and only avios refund?
    thanks

    • Jonathan says:

When you say lose all the money, is that because you’re being quoted £35pp cancellation fee? I’m afraid that’s the standard these days. The 50p (£1 for a return booking) was a temporary quirk which it seems BA has now eliminated.

      • pin perl says:

        Yes Jonathan,
When did that come into effect??
        shame…..
        Thanks

        • Ryan says:

I cancelled one last week. Got all the avios back immediately, and just got charged the 50p (well £2 as it was 4 tickets).

    • Rob says:

You’d need to call and see what the agent decides to charge!

    Re: BA European flight cancellations

Does anyone have an idea of the notice period given by BA for flight cancellations – or of the shortest acceptable one? I have not been able to discern a consistent pattern. In his statement last week Willie Walsh stated that if a flight was uneconomic they would cancel it. However they might not know this until the day before if they are still waiting for bookings.

    • ChrisC says:

To be honest it would depend on the date and the route.

Also they will look at loads on the return flight

In normal times they were more likely to cancel a flight where they had multiple flights that day to the same day to maximise revenue and minimise refunds.

      • William R B says:

Thanks, Chris, but I am really trying to get a handle on the period of notice (days, weeks?) before cancellation. As always there are ancillary arrangements to sort if a flight is cancelled at short notice.

        • ChrisC says:

as I said it can depend on the route rather than just being a standard period for all flights

Post the route are you flying and you might get a more speficic answer.

          • William R B says:

LHR-BSL early Sept out for 4 day stay.
Had to change from Easyjet LTN – they gave one months notice of cancellation

    • Aaron C says:

They seem to be inconsistent. For example they operated 2 TFS-LHR on Saturday despite each being <50% load according to the crew.

      • ChrisBCN says:

You need to look at the out and the return load, not one way….

  • Yorkieflyer says:

Is it still the case that you can cancel for a full refund inside 24 hours of booking BA? Including Avios bookings?

  • Anna says:

SeatSpy and RFF both showing no direct flights from MAN to Europe after June 2021. BA system playing up so I can’t check there but this doesn’t sound good for the regions!

    • Lady London says:

Well you are still quite close to thr 355 days. So on I would say you will see later flights appearing but not yet as there are Winter seasom covid flying scheduling for them to sort out first.

      • Anna says:

It’s very odd they are showing up till the end of June then as that’s well into the summer season! Just nothing for July, other routes are showing up to July 20th.

        • Plane Spotters Rule says:

It may be because BA are contemplating abandoning MAN as they have LBA

  • Jtz says:

Does anyone know if you get charged to withdraw the normal £200 on curve blue, hilton underlying? Or are they still free?
    Thanks

    • Connor says:

Should be free. Even after withdrawing £3,000 in cash on a credit card within a week I’ve never been charged their “2%” fee.

  • Colin says:

There’s been a bit of talk about the 50% off food offer here.

You can use it for takeaway meals too. Just say you’re eating in and then sneak it out. Was easy enough in McDonald’s 😎

  • Connor says:

Yes, they did this for me with 2 separate Hotels.com bookings no problem.

  • Jimmy says:

Anyone know how long it takes for a transaction to indicate if it will accrue charges/cash advance fees on ihg creation?

    • Optimus Prime says:

You won’t know until the next statement is generated.

      • Jimmy says:

Ok. No problems. I thought it may show in ty W recent transactions section
