The new HFP chat thread – Wednesday 29th July

We have decided to run this new daily chat thread on Head for Points.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  It is unlikely that the news flow will be so big over the next few weeks that we will need many ‘Bits’ articles, however.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are stuck at home self-isolating, we want the HFP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as its keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HFP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/07/29/the-new-hfp-chat-thread-wednesday-29th-july/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HFP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

    Good morning all,

I have a question re using Curve as a payment method for another credit card, and I am wondering if anyone has used Curve in this specific scenario. I am aware that curve pay a 1.5% fee on CC payments.

Currently hold the BAPP card, and I am interested in using Virgin Atlantic Rewards+ to pay the bill via Curve.

I have read conflicting stories across the internet. Some say yes (not specifically with the VA+ card), and some say no as it’s something to do with ‘coding’ (not sure what this is exactly) so some cc providers block this type of thing.

Has anybody had success in doing this specific scenario? Would it affect my credit score?
    Thanks!

    • Connor says:

Yes, Virgin works fine to pay Amex with no cash advance fees from Virgin.

Unless you’ve got Metal you’ll be paying 1.5% which kind of defeats the purpose.

      • Tom H says:

Has that changed? I got charged a fee when I did it a few months ago with Virgin?

        • Benilyn says:

Same I got charged with Virgin. I think different people getting different results.

          • Alexander says:

Hello, when did you make the payment? Was it recently? I’m trying to work out if it’s worth it or not.

          • Benilyn says:

I got charged in Jan & Feb

          • Alexander says:

Thanks for the reply. That’s interesting. How much were you charged by Virgin? I am looking at Curve metal, so I wouldn’t be charged by them (bar the account fee).

        • Connor says:

Never been charged by Virgin. Did £4000 last week no problem. Shouldn’t have any issues at the moment anyway as Curve MCC’s are still 8999.

  • Alex B says:

On the Avios/Economist offer has anyone else had the points (almost) double credited?

I.e. 3,600 posted (which I believe is the non-promo rate), then 2 weeks later I got an additional 3,600 and 6,800 (i.e. 10,200) which was the promo rate.

I believe the same happened last year as well.

  • Mark says:

Hi, quite a niche question. Has anyone on here booked a Peppa Pig world hotel package using Hilton/Marriott and had their status recognised? Don’t know if it would count as a third party booking or whether it would count as booking direct…thanks!

    • Roberto says:

Never heard of Pepper Pig World until I read this comment and 10 mins later it turned up as an offer on travelzoo.

  • Martyn Ford says:

A curve refund has hit my card and been converted to curve cash rather than sent back to my underlying card. Apologies if I`ve not been paying attention but is this the new normal?

    • Nigel W says:

For now, yes this is the new normal for Curve refunds.

    • @mkcol says:

Yes they sent an email to explain, this was shortly after they were down for the weekend while escaping Wirecard.

      • Benilyn says:

So can this be sent back to any card now?

        • Chrisasaurus says:

Soon, will be possible, as will automatically using curve cash refund money ahead of underlying card for next tens. For now no, just spend it instead is the game I believe

  • Steve R says:

Converted CC points quite a few times.

Made sure the it said Enter your Tesco coupon code with tick before switching for dates in question.
Got the payment page which said”Sorry, but you cannot redeem coupons or Hotels.com® Rewards nights for this booking”

Did webchat with Hotels.com, turned out they could not see the same page as me & they are not allowed to receive screen shots Grrrr

  • @mkcol says:

Trying to pay my Santander credit card with Curve metal fronting my IHG/VS card but it’s declined both – do Santander prevent this type of transaction?

  • Laura_D says:

Am trying to get avios flights LHR to Malaga AGP through BA.com but every time I try to search on the website I get “Error There was a problem with your request, please try again later”.

Rewardflightfinder is showing availability for the dates I’m looking at (early August to beginning on September).

Any ideas what could be happening? Is there another way to book these flights? I don’t mind the quarantine on the return to UK and want to lock in Avios as they’ll be more flexible than cash tickets should the situation change and we need to return earlier.

    Thanks all.

    • Rhys says:

Yes this seems to be a problem with BA’s IT systems at the moment. You’re not alone!
