The new HFP chat thread – Wednesday 29th July

We have decided to run this new daily chat thread on Head for Points.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  It is unlikely that the news flow will be so big over the next few weeks that we will need many ‘Bits’ articles, however.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are stuck at home self-isolating, we want the HFP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as its keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HFP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/07/29/the-new-hfp-chat-thread-wednesday-29th-july/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HFP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Boeing to cease 747 production as losses hit $2.4bn
    https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-53583939

When was the last time an airline *bought* a 747?

    • Alexander says:

I wasn’t even aware it was still in production!

    • Andrew says:

The 747-8 was bought reasonably recently by the likes of Lufthansa etc

      • Rhys says:

They placed the order in 2006!

        • Andrew says:

Yes, saw that on Wiki too – although the delivery of the latest one of their 19 ordered would be much more recently than that.

    • Grant says:

I seem to recall reading something recently about UPS receiving a new 747-8

    • Ja says:

I did the Boeing tour in Seattle about 2 years ago. I was surprised when they said about how many orders they had. Quite a few as cargo planes but also quite a few for private people. I think they had about 4 years of orders

      • Rhys says:

4 years of orders isn’t a huge amount given they only produce 6 per year!

      • Gringo says:

I wish I knew enough people to privately fill a 747!

        • Chrisasaurus says:

          Bit chicken/ egg

Come tell us when you have your own 747 and you’ll have 500 friends I’m in no time!

I’ve just had a 2 night stay at the Hotel Indigo in Durham. What a fantastic hotel – the architecture and decor are utterly charming, best ever showers (you can choose rainfall or handheld or both) and we were upgraded to superior rooms. They didn’t service the room but they left clean towels and a sack of toiletries/coffee/biscuits etc in each room on the second night. Hot cooked to order breakfast was served in the very attractive (but currently closed) Marco Pierre White restaurant. Service was impeccable though that was probably partly because there weren’t many guests. The only downside was the £16 per night parking charge but if we’d been less lazy we’d have found somewhere cheaper. Used 30k points for one room and the other was £105 per night, including breakfast on the second morning. Will definitely stay again.

My teenage son and his cousin were extremely impressed when they called room service for extra milk for their hot chocolate and it was delivered immediately in a proper jug!

    • Blindman says:

I’ve stayed a few times and would agree. It used to be the town hall I believe.

      MPW is great

      • Dominic Barrington says:

Most certainly it was not!! It was the University offices, until the sold up and decamped to modern premises up the hill, which was a great shame! It was the place where degree results would be posted, and I have fond memories of waiting anxiously for the list for my subject to be posted on a noticeboard there in early June 1984!

        • Anna says:

Some of the rooms are university themed, it’s absolutely charming! (Though nothing like the student digs of my uni days).

    • Harry T says:

Thanks, Durham is just down the road for me, so this is good to know.

      • Harry T says:

@Anna are you IHG Spire? I wonder if they would upgrade me as Plat.

        • Blindman says:

I’m Spire and have been upgraded the times I have been there.

The service is always good and I would be surprised if you as a Plat didn’t get an upgrade as they seem to recognise status.

        • Anna says:

It was booked in OH’s name, he is Spire Ambassador (though of course he has no idea what that is 😂).

  • xcalx says:

Does transfering Heathrow points to another persons account reset the expiry date of both accounts.

    Thanks

  • Matt says:

It looks like the Sunday times are going to run a competition to win 200,000 avios this weekend. On Apple news there is a Sunday times story dated Aug 2nd 2020.

    • EwanG says:

It’s for the Sunday Times Travel magazine, which has its 200th issue next month.
