The new HFP chat thread – Thursday 23rd July

We have decided to run this new daily chat thread on Head for Points.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  It is unlikely that the news flow will be so big over the next few weeks that we will need many ‘Bits’ articles, however.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are stuck at home self-isolating, we want the HFP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as its keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HFP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/07/23/the-new-hfp-chat-thread-thursday-23rd-july/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HFP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

In regards to the Business Platinum. Does that build your credit history with Amex or the business? Thinking of swapping over from a personal Amex to a business one. Been with amex a long time on my personal card which I would rather carry forward but then wouldn’t get the sign up on a personal Plat card. I can however cancel and apply for business after 6 months to get the 40k points.

Also does the member since date on the card get reset if you move over to Business?

  • Alex says:

Data point: I never had any credit card applications rejected but recently this happened twice, once with IHG Rewards Club Premium and just now with BAPP card. No problems with my credit rating and I suspect that may be Creation or Amex are putting some policies in place preventing previous users to get the same card again (I had both these cards several years ago, and interestingly after the IHG Rewards Club Premium rejection managed to get free IHG Rewards Club card which I never had before).

    • Genghis says:

Most people don’t seem to be able to get the Creation card again (not that the black is available anymore anyway) – though I had the White twice – and there’s no changes on Amex’s end in recent experience.

    • Secret Squirrel says:

No problems here with getting accepted for the same Amex cards so can’t be generic.

    • TGLoyalty says:

Worth contacting amex if you have another Amex product as they may adjust the credit limit on that so they can offer you another card.

    Hi
I made a lot of purchases at Morries when they were offering 8 virgin points. I still have tons of pending transactions from March. Any way I can claim them. Many thanks

    • Rob says:

No, if they are going to turn to ‘paid’ it will happen automatically at some point. I am guessing Morrisons hasn’t paid its bill.

    • The Urbanite says:

I had a really random Waitrose transaction from January approved at the end of June.

Most of mine from M cleared within a couple of months. A few are outstanding but not going to hold my breath or chase them.

That’s the sound of Michael O’Leary cackling in the background…

Apologies if this has been answered but I have an Avois booking and need to cancel the flight. I don’t however want to pay the £35p/p as it’s not worth it (I have too many Avois and don’t want to spend more real money getting them back)

If I take the voucher therefore does one of the initial passengers have to travel when it is redeemed again?

    • Rhys says:

      Yes, as per the FAQ:
“Does the booking have to be made in your name?

The voucher allows you to make a future booking in the name of the person on the original ticket. If you had multiple bookings each person will receive their own voucher to use. The voucher is non-transferable.”

Although who knows if this is actually enforced.

    • TGLoyalty says:

When is the booking for? If online cancellation returns you may be able to refund for £1 again.

  • Ammar says:

Have a trip to Manchester in August. The Victoria and Albert Marriott has rooms with two doubles, so good for wife and child as well. Just wondering if anyone has stayed there, any thoughts? Also the alternative would be the crowne plaza, again any thoughts?

Also any Marriott hotel promotions on, can’t find any? Thinking about booking a few stays for the status as it has become slightly easier

    • Harry T says:

Sorry, haven’t stayed in that hotel.

No sign of a Bonvoy promotion for this quarter, as of yet! I am also keen for one.

    • Kai says:

Can’t comment on those two hotels, but just had two stays at the AC and Holiday Inn. Both were exceptionally good, especially the former. I’d say they’re much better than an average Marriott / Hilton in the UK or Europe.

      • Pangolin says:

        Which AC was that?
I’d almost never rate an AC above an FS Marriott, though I do have a soft spot for AC Valencia.

    • Neil says:

Stayed there a couple of times a while back and don’t remember any problems or issues – was usual chain hotel experience -room, food, service all good from our experiences. Was easy to walk to places we needed to go or you could easily pickup an Uber ( this is all pre Covid of course ). Can recommended Tattu restaurant nearby if that’s your sort of thing. I was told by another guest that one of the floors in the hotel has lower ceilings so they will size you up on check in and allocate you that floor if you’re shorter – not sure how true this is and may not be much of an issue with status upgrades etc.

      • Ammar says:

Thanks Neil, If I was on my own i would be happy to try something new/different and chance it but when with family I like some certainty regarding standards/expectations.

    • MrHandBaggageOnly says:

Hi @Ammar, we stayed at both last year and I preferred the V&A. The CP is fine, but a business hotel and lacking any real charm, but it is efficient. The V&A just had a bit more to it, the staff were very friendly, I preferred to room layout (although low ceilings in the room we had – especially in the bath/shower could be a problem for anyone very tall). Currently lots of construction going on around the V&A, but not a problem if you’re awake early. Parking is also easier at the V&A (outside the front door if your lucky or the concierge will drive away and return for you for the same price).

      • Ammar says:

That is great to know, parking convenience is important to me. The height of ceiling should be fine for us, Sound like a friendly hotel and also nearby restaurants as Neil mentioned make it a winner for me, CP lacked some charm from the online photos so i will go with the V&A this time.

The final Qantas 747 flight QF7474 took off yesterday from SYD bound for LAX to then fly on to the Mojave desert tomorrow

The flight path created the flying kangaroo logo before it started across the Pacific – quite cool

Anyone know when the Mr and Mrs Smith brand will be teamed up properly into Ihg?
    Have they postponed the date?
    Thank you
