The new HFP chat thread – Wednesday 22nd July

We have decided to run this new daily chat thread on Head for Points.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the defacto repository for random comments and questions.  It is unlikely that the news flow will be so big over the next few weeks that we will need many ‘Bits’ articles, however.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are stuck at home self-isolating, we want the HFP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as its keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HFP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/07/22/the-new-hfp-chat-thread-wednesday-22nd-july/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HFP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Anyone have any numbers on passenger count from the first Virgin flights to JFK and LAX yesterday??

  • Anon says:

Any way to easily tell what easyjet routes are least likely to get cancelled?

I thought Amsterdam would have been relatively safe but my flights were cancelled and I opted for the voucher to use for somewhere else.

    • Harry T says:

No sure fire way. You can make assumptions based on the popularity and safety of the destination. When you have booked the flight, you can look at the seat map to get a rough idea of the load factor.

  • Alex says:

Email from BA this morning. First LHR-SEA 22 September (20) cancelled. On phone for less than 30 mins in total to get a full refund – very happy overall 👌

  • Leigh says:

    Amex Gold Supplementary Card fee.
I submitted an application to add a second supplementary card to my gold credit card account. The card hasn’t arrived yet and I just realised that there is fee for second supplementary card. Does anyone know if the fee is added before or after the supplementary card activation? If former, is the fee refundable when the supplementary card is cancelled?

  • Venturelog says:

I booked a return flight with BA. The return leg (to LHR) was cancelled. I changed the return leg to a day earlier. BA tells us that the change is free, but if the flight costs more we have to pay the difference.
But what if the flight price has dropped? BA doesn’t seem bothered about refunding.
For me it was only a £10 difference so i didn’t bother. But for others, the difference could be much more. Going the voucher route and rebooking may not always work for everyone.

    • Rachel R says:

That’s strange. We had a flight cancelled and when I wanted to rebook to a different date (4 weeks before the original flight) the new flights were about 4x the price. They moved us without charging us any difference in fare.

    • Rhys says:

BA give you another voucher for the difference….

    • Lady London says:

BA incorrect again.NO payment of fare diff is due if the airline cancelled or significantly rescheduled any part of tbe booking. Fact.

If you cbose to change yes you pay fare diff and change fee.

Call tbem back and demand your £10 back plus a further amount for the time youve had to waste on tbis. If they do this to 100,000 prople then they make £1milion they are not entitled to

Talking of supplementary cards, does anyone know if Amex is offering any bonus MR points for issuing Gold Business supplementary cards at the moment? Rob ran an article last August when they were doing it on Gold and Plat Business, but there’s a message on his article saying: “(EDIT: This offer is now closed. However, you can continue to earn bonus points for the first FIVE supplementary cards you isssue on any Business Gold or Business Platinum account.)” So I’m a bit confused.
If Amex aren’t running it, I’ll hold off until they do.

    • BLT says:

I didn’t get any bonus adding a supplementary card to my Amex plat business a couple of weeks ago. My Wife also hasn’t receive any referral bonus for referring from her platinum Amex.

      • Colin JE says:

Thanks BLT. I’ll hang on until if/when Amex offers some referral MR points. Sounds like you’ve got a good case for the referral bonus though. Has your wife called Amex yet? Shouldn’t you also have got a bigger sign up bonus with the referral?

  • WaynedP says:

Another BA flight cancellation just received from LHR to DUR and back from mid to end September.
Initially May, then July, now September all cancelled – grim.
They may still be flying into JHB in Sept, but arrivals in SA now require 14 day quarantine, and foreigners can’t enter without a visa, which are apparently only granted in exceptional circumstances.

  • Ian says:

    Hi all,

Is use of a personal AMEX card for your business against AMEX T&Cs?

    • Colin JE says:

Have never heard of that. I’ve often used my card for business. How would they know?
Is there anything that caused you to worry about it?

    • Rob says:

Potentially but rare. It is worse if you do the opposite because the business card has higher fees and you are robbing shops if you use it for personal spend.

You WOULD have a problem if you tried to use Section 75 to recover money for a business purchase on a personal card.

      • meta says:

For S75 claim, it really depends on what type of
purchase it is. I mean if you bought 150 laptops, it would be difficult to persuade Amex it is for personal use.

      • Ian says:

I’ve been using a personal Amex charge card for business spend for a long time. Often have a large balance, always clear the balance before it’s due. But they’ve just emailed to say:

“We are writing to let you know that we are currently performing a review of your American Express® Account referenced above. We review accounts on a regular basis to ensure we meet our obligations as a responsible lender. While we conduct this review, charging on your account has been suspended.”

They’ve requested personal bank statements. But of course the personal bank statements won’t show the kind of income that matches the spend through the card. I pay the card from the business bank account, not my personal one.

        • Manny_D says:

Would be interesting to hear the outcome of this. I’ve heard about financial reviews of accounts in the US but not here in the UK, so would be an insight to see what they require to solve it.

          • Ian says:

I’ve posted another comment about this on the most recent page with more information

        • Louise K says:

Please do keep us posted on this, I would be most interested to know the outcome.

I use personal cards for my business too its where I earn all my points, hope they don’t do a review of mine.

          • Ian says:

Hi Louise, see my more recent post this afternoon. The reason for the account being suspended is due to the use of BillHop.

        • Connor says:

Had the same email a few months back except instead of spending spend they dropped my limit by 8 grand. Phoned and the guy on the phone said he could see no reason why it occurred (always paid on time and in full) and said I could appeal by giving bank statements. Even after providing bank statements (personal account as a sole trader) which had 10k going in and out each month they refused to budge unfortunately.

Shoddy service as I was told they would send a letter out with a decision which never arose, and an appeal procedure in which you can only give a bank statement and no other information is pretty bad imo.

        • Lady London says:

I would say paying the card from a business account is what triggered this.

Amex credit cards will be getting badly hit for s75 liability right now. Also their refund policy on charge cards has been generous as a matter of policy and practice. So they will probably analysing transactions to ensure they are not taking s75 liability for spend that is not personal.

Also cap on interchange fees for personal cards means retailer is charged a lot more if yoh pay using a business card so of course tbey will want you not to use your personsl card.

We sll know lots of us do expense claims for expenses we had to use our personal cards for and so does Amex but if they’re under pressure then they will start auditing, denying and contesting things. So make sure any ticket yoh claim s75 or Amex cover for on a personal card is not a business expense.
