The new HFP chat thread – Monday 20th July

We have decided to run this new daily chat thread on Head for Points.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the defacto repository for random comments and questions.  It is unlikely that the news flow will be so big over the next few weeks that we will need many ‘Bits’ articles, however.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are stuck at home self-isolating, we want the HFP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as its keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HFP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/07/20/the-new-hfp-chat-thread-monday-20th-july/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HFP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

A new premium hotel in an excellent location coming to Edinburgh in a couple of years I guess. L&G have acquired the Debenhams store on Princes Street for redevelopment. I just hope they install a new elevator!

    • Baji Nahid says:

Oh wow, is that store marked for closure, wont be long till all the shops move along to the quarter and Prices street is all bars and beer gardens and hotels (thats if covid doesnt throw the spanner in)

      • BJ says:

Yep, going to feel more like a theme park than a city. Cannot help but feel we are losing our city to tourists. IIRC Jenners is also being redeveloped as a hotel.

      • Michael says:

It is a pretty soul destroying store. The last time I was in it a few years ago I’d forgotten just what a dreadful layout it is.

    • Peggers says:

I think they may have to retain the staircase with stained glass window, but may wish to dispose of the bust of William Ewart Gladstone from the ‘Liberal Club Lounge’!

  • BJ says:

Just seen reports that Marriott will require guests to wear face masks at ALL their hotels from 27 July.

    • Harry T says:

Well, they haven’t even been getting all their staff to do it, based on my experience this weekend (which I don’t mind, as they were obeying local law).

    • meta says:

I think this is only for US and Canada!

  • Martyn Ford says:

Does anyone know if Al Maha, Dubai is still full board for reward bookings? Thank you.

    • John says:

Says when you click into the redemption amount payable for full board and activities. For my dates was approx £180 per night

    • OP says:

It IS full-board and there shouldn’t be more to pay, unless you have a third person. Check the ‘rate details’ when you book.

  • Crafty says:

Curve have double-charged a transaction to my underlying card. Not only has this resulted in £5600 rather than £2800 being charged, but this has tripped my credit limit and incurred a £12 fee as well as who knows what credit report impact.

Surprisingly enough, they didn’t understand my complaint and told me not to worry, the second charge would “eventually drop off”.

I don’t really have a question – just wanted to vent about their incompetence. Obviously will now have to waste loads of my time on this.

    • Brighton Belle says:

Gulp, if Curve did that to me I would probably be in A&E within 30 minutes with the shock of the consequence to my credit record.

    • Nick_C says:

Tell your CC issuer that you have been charged twice for the same transaction and you dispute it. They should then waive any fees.

    • YC says:

+1… 5 emails back and forth and they still dont get it…

First transaction was also dropped off Curve but not underlying which makes things even more complicated!

    • John says:

Wirecard charged pre-auths fully, not sure how it works now. The second transaction would be refunded in a few days, had this several times but obviously if you went over limit then you’l have to deal with the card issuer
