The new HFP chat thread – Friday 10th July

We have decided to run this new daily chat thread on Head for Points.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the defacto repository for random comments and questions.  It is unlikely that the news flow will be so big over the next few weeks that we will need many ‘Bits’ articles, however.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are stuck at home self-isolating, we want the HFP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as its keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HFP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/07/10/the-new-hfp-chat-thread-friday-10th-july/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HFP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

If I have easyjet tickets to a country the FCO currently advises against but the airline is currently flying to, what are my rights in terms of cancelling and getting a refund?
    Would Insurance help?
    Thank you

    • Anna says:

I think this would be one for your insurance, if your policy meets all the criteria (I’ve lost track).

    • Lady London says:

this has been asked and answered quite a lot on here.

the shorr answer is (1) read your insurance detailed terms as received when you purchased and (2) take a look at the easyjet website edpecially the covid section. if neither of these covers what you want then move it as ej currently lets you do without change fee

  • tracy says:

Is anyone booking to the us in December? i quite fancy new york at this time but very cautious as covid seems worse there than anywhere….

    • Rhys says:

A quick look at the US’ daily COVID-19 cases should tell you enough!

      • GeorgeJ says:

New York City and State are roughly where we are in terms of numbers. They have also restricted entry from @ 20 other States.
However you still have the issue of FCO advice not to travel and US restrictions on visitors from Europe, neither are likely to go away soon.
Not one I would use cash on non refundable points for!

        • Tracy says:

If I was to book would be avois and reward night hotel booking but as I’m cautious about it anyway, think I’ll give it a miss this year…..

    • marcw says:

      Don’t give airlines a free-interest loan.

    • Anna says:

I’m having quite serious doubts that we’ll even be going at Easter at this rate. Just hoping I would be able to change my F seats to JFK to CW seats to GCM (no F cabin) as this is our ultimate destination and the one we have seats to fly back from!

  • Joe says:

Hi All — would anyone have any suggestions for 4-week (automatic) car hire in (west) London? I’ve been caught short suddenly by Sixt, who won’t let me extend a month’s hire for a third time and want the hire car (mini) back on Monday (my flipping birthday!). I’ve been on a Covid rate of circa £530.00 pcm, but that will almost double if I hire a different car via Sixt. Any pointers would be much appreciated!

    Joe

    • Lady London says:

      Avis was encouraging longterm recently

      • Lady London says:

As its now peak season you could get stuck. why not follow an earlier suggestion from @Anna on a different subject and book 2 car hires with BA holidays? @Anna has said apparently 2 count as a package. You might stlll be fighting peak rates if they apply them but basically youre looking for someone with a deal that could flatten the rate seasonally.

  • Don says:

Curve still 8999? So usable with Revolut on HH.

    • Connor says:

Yup, been using it so much Curve have blocked it twice due to “unusual activity”

      • Harry T says:

Any luck with IHG card linked to Curve? I haven’t seen any cash advance or interest fees yet but can’t find the MCC.

        • Connor says:

Don’t have one so unfortunately don’t know. The MCC is still 8999 so no cash advance/interest fees for now. Rinse it while you can.

  • Anuj says:

I’m trying to use ihg through curve on NS&I, but it won’t let even a £1 go through. Same with paying off Amex bills. How does everyone else manage hundreds ? My ihg in curve works fine on normal retail spend so the card works.

    • Doug M says:

Do you have any history with Curve, and any spend going through it?

  • Martyn Ford says:

In July 2019 I paid QR approx €1,700 for an AMS-DPS booking which was due to take place in April. In March I took a voucher which I used for OSL-USM return in October. When a leg of that flight was cancelled I requested a refund and have just received €990. My conversation with the QR representative was protracted and inconclusive. Has anyone else had this sort of issue?

    • Lady London says:

      what was their reason?

messy as part-refunded. I think if I had a contractual right to a refund Id now be doing Section 75

      • Martyn Ford says:

After about 40 minutes the rep. said that it was too complicated to settle today, that she would look into it and that I should call back next week. Messy is a very apt description.

  • Paul Irving says:

Hey folks, I have a new youtube channel for video reviews, my first one was the Maldives Hilton Rangali Conrad (used my points to book the hotel and Avios for the flights)

  • Chrisasaurus says:

Sooo anyone else with a personal lease with Arval know if there’s a way to make additional card payments ahead of the DD?

    • Freddy says:

Not sure on the card question but beware when you return the car. Arval tried it on with some dubious damage charges after the lease ended until I complained

      • Chrisasaurus says:

I’ll be on the lookout but in past performance there will be more than enough legitimate damage for them to focus on!

      • Aul says:

Mercedes Benz personal finance have tried it on with me every single time and I am on my 5th or 6th 2 year lease. It pays to photograph every inch of the car before it’s returned and cancel direct debits immediately the final rental has been taken.
It’s dispiriting at just how inept and amateurish they are.
About 6 years ago it went to the Financial ombudsman who found in m favour and awarded compensation. 18 months ago the spurious bill amounted to around £900 for a dented boot and excess mileage. It was bizarre and resolved with images.

        • Paul says:

I couldn’t have had a more different experience with VW finance. Every time they’ve e been so reasonable and professional with their car collection.

The last car I handed back I feared I was going to charged a fortune, it came in at £72

          • BJ says:

For the benefit of Edinburgh readers who missed the comments last time, I’ll just drop in here that Eastern-Western Group are happy to take amex. Did very nicely from that, Andrew I think it was, also reported a similar positive experience.

          • Anna says:

VW finance take Amex as well.

        • Anna says:

Why do you keep going back to them?!

        • Crafty says:

Why are you on your 5th lease with them given this behaviour?
