Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The new HFP chat thread – Thursday 9th July

We have decided to run this new daily chat thread on Head for Points.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the defacto repository for random comments and questions.  It is unlikely that the news flow will be so big over the next few weeks that we will need many ‘Bits’ articles, however.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are stuck at home self-isolating, we want the HFP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as its keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HFP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/07/09/the-new-hfp-chat-thread-thursday-9th-july/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

We will continue to monitor how this is working.  Let’s see how it goes.  Take care!

    • New Card says:

Could this explain why Hotels.com was taken off for a long while as a redemption partner?

      • Grant says:

“Tesco temporarily suspended Hotels.com from its Tesco Clubcard partnership until the issue was satisfactorily resolved.”

    • Rob says:

      This is great, thank you.

    • bsuije says:

      Woah….

    • Connor says:

      Still hasn’t been patched.

      • the_real_a says:

I read that it had been back in March. What Tesco are asking people to do is check to see if their converted Hotels.com voucher have been used fraudulently. The string of letters and numbers are now fully randomised instead of the last 5 digits (!) and the maximum number of tries validation has been placed on the order form.

I am looking to get to Hawaii next year using a 2-4-1 to LAX and Avios from LAX to Hawaii, ideally avoiding overnight stays.

    Would this be sensible:

Dep LHR 09:55 arr LAX 13:05; dep LAX 18:04 arr OGG 20:43
Dep HNL 08:00 arr LAX 16:25; dep LAX 21:35 arr LHR 16:05

Both have GE. And wont be travelling until next summer, when fingers crossed its OK to fly again.

    • marcw says:

I think it’s very sensible “connection” in normal times. The problem with booking so far in advance, we have no clue how the situation is in 10-12 months, sadly. Not only could there be border restrictions, but your flight(s) could face schedule changes and even cancellations. I would book it, but for the LAX-OGG I would either wait to book it – OR, I would book that flight, and maybe a flight also the following day, so in case the LHR-LAX gets rescheduled by 3-4h, you always have the option to fly the following day. You can always cancel the Avios booking and pay only £35.

  • OP says:

For anyone interested, the W Barcelona has a flash sale with higher-tier rooms (City view – Fabulous room) at ~200EUR/night at a flexible rate with breakfast until the end of their calendar. These are usually 500EUR+/night on summer weekends.

    • Harry T says:

Cool Corner Suites are about half price too (428 vs 760-800 euros) if people are feeling decadent!

      • BJ says:

I wonder if they will throw in a suite at Turnberry for 14 nights for those of us returning to Scotland.

  • BJ says:

Looks like a Nectar/ Agoda partnership has been launched but no need to get excited, states up to 2000 bonus points per night. Nothing about spending.

  • Grant says:

Apologies if this has been covered already, but potentially good news for those of us that live in the provinces. Blue Islands take over some Flybe routes after £10m loan from Jersey Govt.

  • Sunguy says:

This has probably been answered elsewhere – but Im confused ….

Is the information in this article still current ?

    https://headforpoints.com/2019/09/06/what-are-the-cancellation-fees-on-an-avios-booking/

When I look, at ba.com, it tells me there is a £35 per person fee to cancel.

If I book an avios ticket at £2+xxxx avios – will I be charged £35 per person to cancel the ticket (i.e. I pay £4 +10k avios for tickets then cancel – do I just lose the £4 and have the 10k avios credited, or will it actively charge me £66) ?

    • Andrew says:

If you want the avios back you need to pay the £35 per person. It all needs to be cancelled on the phone now.

    • MarkH says:

I recently (2 weeks ago) cancelled an avios booking where I’d paid £1 cash.

Called up to cancel as the website is still trying to force vouchers on people and got all my avios back and BA kept the £1.

      • Polly says:

Tnx for that update. Maybe you got a kind agent. Am looking at avios tkts to dub, but didn’t fancy paying 35 each way to cancel.

  • Barry says:

Where have the chat threads from previous days gone? Trying to refer back to something that I read in yesterday’s one but the thread is gone!

    • BJ says:

Hiding! under ‘general’ in the ‘filed under’ part at bottom of the article 😀

    • Rob says:

They haven’t gone, they’ve just been hidden from the home page. Click on ‘General’ in the categories list, either in the menu or under today’s post, and all the ‘General’ articles will appear including old chat threads.

  • MonkeymaN says:

Question re Amex platinum travel insurance.
I had Ryanair flights booked at the start of the yearfor travel in July. The flights were not cancelled, but I did not want to travel against the then current government advice,
The flights were booked using by BA amex, rather than my platinum card. I was under the impression I was covered if booked this way, but my claim was rejected as it was not paid for on the platinum card.
Were Axa correct in this or was I not covered booking with the BA Amex?

    • the_real_a says:

No. You need the definition of “card account” in the full terms and conditions and challenge the decision if this was the sole reason for rejection.

“Account” or “Card Account” means your consumer and small business cards issued by American Express in the UK, excluding corporate cards and any American Express cards issued by bank partners

      https://www.americanexpress.com/content/dam/amex/uk/pdf/insurance/platinum-insurance-documentation-april19.pdf

      • the_real_a says:

By using your BA AMEX you have fulfilled the requirement to make the payment via your “card account”

        • MonkeymaN says:

Thank you very much for that. That was my understanding also, so I will challenge them.
I really appreciate the collective knowledge, experience and helpfulness of the HFP community.
