The new HFP chat thread – Wednesday 8th July

We have decided to run this new daily chat thread on Head for Points.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the defacto repository for random comments and questions.  It is unlikely that the news flow will be so big over the next few weeks that we will need many ‘Bits’ articles, however.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are stuck at home self-isolating, we want the HFP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as its keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HFP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/07/08/the-new-hfp-chat-thread-wednesday-8th-july/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

We will continue to monitor how this is working.  Let’s see how it goes.  Take care!

Has anyone cancelled Plat amex after receiving 20k points? I’ve given it a few days…

  • Alan S says:

I’ve had a refund through from KLM today for a cancelled flight, although it’s €25 short, which I’m guessing relates to the piece of hold luggage that was paid for at the time of booking.

Anyone have refunds from KLM and experienced similar?

I’ve obviously contacted them, because they cancelled the flight, so I’ll be damned if they are keeping my €25…!

    • The Lord says:

Out of interest, how long did the refund take to come through?

    • Charlieface says:

With KLM generally the suitcase is a separate ticket number, they may not have noticed it. Or it could be on purpose…

      • Alan S says:

Interesting. It has its own ticket eh!

I’ll look that up tomorrow and try to claim for that.

Request was put through about a month ago. The flight was supposed to be last weekend, so not sure of that’s just coincidental.

  • BJ says:

I’m curious why some Curve cardholders are reporting lots of issues and some none at all. Is the root of the problem Curve or the cardholders themselves?

    • The Urbanite says:

I’ve have very few issues. Some inexplicable IHG declines a few days ago but transactions went through with smaller amounts and are ok now.

    • Liz says:

Spending and cash withdrawals ok but still waiting for 2 refunds.

    • JJ says:

I’d bet the problems are due to Curve processing all transactions under one MCC at the moment, not passing them through from the purchase to the c/card companies.

The underlying card issuer is then blocking these as suspicious.

  • rams1981 says:

I’ve just upgraded to Curve metal. I think there’s at least £150 of value to be had.

    • The Urbanite says:

I value it at a lot more than that – was a no-brainer for me to upgrade!

    • stevenhp1987 says:

Does it still reset your spend amounts that count towards your limits? If so I should probably upgrade me and the wife in the next month or two.

  • Alejandro says:

Hi. I have a booking with IC Budapest on 17th July which I’m going to cancel. Wondering what is going to happen with the Ambassador Complimentary Weekend Night certificate that I used to book a stay? The original exp date was 31st July 2020. Thank you

    • Anna says:

My bogof certificate expiry was extended to October 2021 (from Feb 2021) a couple of months ago, so it would seem likely that it’ll go back into your account with an extended date as long as you cancel your stay in time.

    • Lyn says:

The unused certificates have been extended by six months (twice by three months at a time), As far as I know they aren’t actually “used” until you check in or out of the hotel, rather than when you book, so yours may already have been extended.

  • Leo says:

The IHG Black card – does the 10K for the room voucher need to be paid during the calendar year or the financial year i.e. April onwards? Thanks.

    • Luckyjim says:

Your card year. And you don’t get until the end of your card year unfortunately.

  • Jeremy I says:

Hello all. Just wondering whether anyone has any views / advice on getting into the USA at the moment? My partner and I want to go to Boston asap – he lives out there but left just before lockdown and won’t be able to get back in on his visa category if in Schengen + UK/ Ireland in previous 14 days (and I’m just an ESTA holder so cant get in either). What countries are people using as ‘staging posts’ into the US, ie countries that permit entry from UK and have direct flights to US? Turkey? Croatia? Mexico? Similarly do we know if US border control is actually checking (or able to check) whether you have been outside schengen for the full 14 days – could you fly to turkey on Friday night and out to NYC on a separate ticket on the Sunday? Any thoughts gratefully received. Thanks so much Jeremy

    • Rhys says:

With electronic passports they will almost certainly be able to see your past travel.

    • Anna says:

They know where you’ve been so I wouldn’t bother trying to be honest.

    • marcw says:

I’m afraid, but there’s no easy way to enter the US unless you are have US Passport, GreenCard holder.

      • Jeremy I says:

Thanks everyone. Just to confirm we all agree that Turkey and Croatia – as long as we’re there for 14 days and dont transit Schengen or UK/Ireland – would be options for accessing the USA?

  • BJ says:

The Scottish Government has announced that only those returning from the 39 countries rated Green risk by the UK Government will be exempt from the 14 day quarantine. Those 20 countries on the amber list, notably including Spain, will not. Details of all Scottish residents returning to airports elsewhere in the UK will be available and those impacted will be subject to quarantine checks.

    • EvilDoctorK says:

According to the BBC story it’s just Spain and Serbia impacted ? [ Serbia is understandable giving current situation there seems to be deteriorating .. seems a bit harsh on Spain though – and presumably a lot more arrivals from Spain than Serbia ] – https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-53336489

      • BJ says:

Ah sorry, I took it from what they were reporting live and that sounded like only the green countries were accepted. The issue with Spain as I understood it was that prevsilance remains over ten times greater than in Scotland.

    • Andrew says:

I’m shocked. I thought the Scottish Government would have listed Catalonia and Spain individually.
