The new HFP chat thread – Wednesday 8th July

We have decided to run this new daily chat thread on Head for Points.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the defacto repository for random comments and questions.  It is unlikely that the news flow will be so big over the next few weeks that we will need many ‘Bits’ articles, however.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are stuck at home self-isolating, we want the HFP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as its keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HFP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/07/08/the-new-hfp-chat-thread-wednesday-8th-july/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

We will continue to monitor how this is working.  Let’s see how it goes.  Take care!

2 months ago I requested a refund from TAP for a cancelled flight this coming October. I’ve got a reference number which was automatically generated on their website but I’ve not had any contact. How long do you think I should give them ?

  • Chris Heyes says:

If Anna’s Fitted Wardrobes are stated at £1000 plus VAT at 20%
The cost to Anna is £1200
But if VAT is reduced to 10%
The cost to Anna is £1100
No way round for the company “short term” as VAT is a Government Tax not a shop one
Long term the company could risk increasing its prices, but come unstuck when VAT went back up
risking losing sales on both counts

    • Rob says:

Except it is illegal for a B2C company to quote prices like this. Only B2B companies are allowed to do it. This means you will never see such examples in real life.

      • Aston100 says:

Perhaps I’m misunderstanding what you are saying because I’ve had plenty of receipts and invoices which have a breakdown of the price with VAR a separate line item.

        • Aston100 says:

*with VAT as a separate line item.

Can’t wait for proper forum software on this site!

        • Rob says:

And, going forward, that split will show a smaller VAT element and larger base cost element.

      • Charlieface says:

None of that is relevant. What is relevant is when the VAT is booked as being liable, usually the earlier of invoice date or supply date.

    • TGLoyalty says:

It depends the quote may say £1k + 20% vat in which case yes I’d expect to pay less or it might just say £1200 then the price is £1200 regardless of what taxes the firm have to pay.

Let’s not forget if corporation tax went up tomorrow would you expect your price to change to reflect that?

Regarding hotels, food etc in the UK all prices are just quoted as the price there’s never any mention of VAT/taxes on menus etc

  • Dominic Barrington says:

In mid June there was talk of COVID tests being offered by Swissport/Collinson at LHR, if the government was prepared to allow those who tested negative forgo quarantine. Does anyone know if there have been any developments on this front?
