American Airlines moving its flights to London Heathrow Terminal 5

American Airlines will be moving all of its London Heathrow flights into BA’s Terminal 5 from tomorrow, Tuesday.

‘All’ isn’t much at the moment, of course. American is only operating four flights – one per day to Dallas / Fort Worth (DFW), New York JFK, Chicago O’Hare and Miami.

Check-in will be in Zone C, except for Flagship First customers who can use the First Wing. The dedicated security lane in the First Wing is currently closed, however, so if there are no queues it is a bit of a waste of time heading down there.

Lounge access is available as per standard oneworld rules.

Finnair is also due to move to Terminal 5 in the next couple of weeks.

How to earn American Airlines miles from UK credit cards (December 2021)

American Airlines no longer has its own UK credit card.

There is, however, still a way to earn American Airlines miles from a UK credit card.

The route is via Marriott Bonvoy. Marriott Bonvoy hotel loyalty points convert to American Airlines miles at the rate of 3:1. You receive an additional 5,000 miles bonus if you convert 60,000 Marriott Bonvoy points at once.

The best way to earn Marriott Bonvoy points is via the official Marriott Bonvoy American Express card. It comes with 20,000 points for signing up and 2 points for every £1 you spend.

At 2 Bonvoy points per £1, you are earning (at 3:1) 0.66 American Airlines miles per £1 spent on the card. This will increase to 0.83 AA miles per £1 if you convert Bonvoy points in chunks of 60,000 points.

Something similar is happening with IB and Air Europa. Air Europa usually operated from T1 at Madrid Airport. T1 was closed for a couple of months, and all flights arr/dep from T4 (IB terminal). Now T1 is open again, but Air Europa is staying in T4. I guess it’s indicative of something…

Is it still worth booking through BA Exec for the additional driver benefit? BA is a bit pricier (£30) but saves on the additional driver charge especially on a longer booking.

  My best bet is that this is only temporary, given AA has their own facilities (arrivals/departure lounge) at T3. Once T3 reopens I’m sure they will both move back there.

I couldn’t find a definition of what Avis considers to be a long term rental to then qualify for the one off extra Avios.
I’m guessing it’s one week but it doesn’t explicitly say, unless I’ve read past it 4 times.

A shame about AA moving from a lounge perspective, as others have noted. I was due to fly AA to JFK in April, which obviously never happened in the end, and was looking forward to finally getting to see what the Cathay lounge was all about. It is highly unlikely that I will fly Cathay or Qantas from LHR in the upcoming years.

  They never renovated. As to whether they’ll have a new one, it isn’t clear….it wasn’t even clear that this was a permanent move until recently!

    The AA move is permanent? I liked their lounge in T3, it was always quite quiet, self serve drinks (although the beer selection was terrible, carlsberg, bud and kaliber) and the pic and mix to make a bag to take on the flight. The BA lounges in T5 feel anything but premium
