American Express recently launched a series of promotions to support holders of Business Platinum cards. We wrote about the Amex Business Platinum cashback deals here.

One of these was the offer of ‘£150 cashback on a £150 purchase from Dell’.

Whilst Dell was clearly hoping that you would use the money towards an expensive new computer, you are free to spend it on whatever you wish from a special Dell / Amex website. This means that you can put together a £150 package of travel luggage and computer accessories and get it for free.

However, it turned out that if you buy multiple items at the same time, Dell was charging each one separately on your American Express card if items were shipped in separate packages. The cashback promotion was NOT cumulative and did NOT pay out unless there is a single charge for £150+ onto your Amex Business card.

The best bit was that Dell would not allow you to return the items you bought because ‘business to business’ transactions are not covered by the laws allowing automatic refunds for online transactions.

Following our article, Amex has swung into action and fixed the problem. Amex dropped me a note on Wednesday to confirm:

The offer has now been changed so that cumulative transactions, totalling £150, trigger the cashback

Cardholders who have contacted Amex to complain about this should already have been credited with their missing cashback

Amex is combing through the accounts of all other Business Platinum cardholders who have spent at Dell recently and will manually apply the cashback if it is due

The offer runs until 27th August so, if you haven’t taken advantage yet (and I haven’t, to be honest) there is still time to place an order.

Rob, as I know you’re a fan: any thoughts on IC Parlis le Grand reopening before Sept. (first bookable date)?

Other alternatives for now are the Hilton P Opera (loved it at Xmas, especially the location) or an apparently not so luxe but V spacious club suite at the CP République: anyone any opinions on the latter?!

  Last week the hilton Opera and the mandarin oriental were still closed with wood panel on the doors, and I had a promenade close to those hotels for instance.
  
  I read somewhere that lots of hotels do not intend to re-open before september if they do in september.
  
  The person owning La Reserve palace (close to the macron residence and the champs-elysees) was quoted saying the occupancy is right now 70% during the week, 40% on week-ends, mainly by residents of monaco and some french people needing to be in paris for business and it seems also because other palaces in paris are closed.

  Not a sh..ty deal It’s the old way systems used to work in computer manufacturers. Someone just overlooked that it would work this way. Now it’s been fixed.

  As Rob says, it depends what you need but I work in IT so ordered 5x VGA > DP and 2x VGA > HDMI adaprtors. Cost £152 and i got £7 for the referral from the unnamed site.

      havent looked at the site as Dell computers are not robust enough for my use. They might have things like cables (electric uk/us/eur/Aus pronged cable to go into your existing charger) and USB A-C, C-C, x-HDMI as suggested by another poster, if there aren’t any adapters you want.

        I found a piece of kit for £150 (forgotten what it was now, some sort of adapter) which seemed to sell well on eBay and wasn’t too big, so it is possible I buy one of those, leave it sealed and immediately flip it. I should end up with £100 profit from modest effort.
        
        You obviously don’t want to be trying to resell bulky items like monitors.

  Just a warning on Dell – I gained £15 worth of Dell Rewards for last purchase, but when trying to redeem on some accessories worth £50 I discovered that you need to spend at least £100 before you can use your rewards. So a bit of a con.

Not sure if you read a couple of comments I wrote earlier in the week on a daily chat thread pertaining to refunds from IHG.
My booking was made at the start of the year, for very late July. Paris CDG.
They are citing French ‘ordinance’ / laws to avoid refunds for my booking, and instead offering a voucher, valid only for that specific hotel.
Genghis here found something in the t&cs that says Georgia state laws apply.
I have since written back to IHG and asked to escalate to someone who understand their own t&cs since the responses to date have been from apparently clueless agents who have kept trying to fob me off with comments about how French law supersedes everything else.

So it may be worth noting that not all IHG properties will be giving refunds.

  it’s amusing to let IHG know they cant get away with allowing their hoteliers to choose which promises made by IHG they get to honour, but frankly I’d have already commenced chargeback.
  
  That way they get slapped witg a chargeback fee, and hopefully a lower score with the card networks that might lead to a greater percentage of card payments to them being retained by cardco’s in future to cover future chargebacks.
  
  And if you paid by UK credit card you can use Section 75 especially if cardci is imposing unreasonable lengths of time before they will deal with chargebacks like Virgin.
