The new HFP chat thread – Sunday 28th June

We have decided to run this new daily chat thread on Head for Points.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the defacto repository for random comments and questions.  It is unlikely that the news flow will be so big over the next few weeks that we will need many ‘Bits’ articles, however.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are stuck at home self-isolating, we want the HFP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as its keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HFP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/06/28/the-new-hfp-chat-thread-sunday-28th-june/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

We will continue to monitor how this is working.  Let’s see how it goes.  Take care!

Not a big issue but the link to the first page of the comments takes you to yesterday’s thread not today’s.

Similar Q re £10k expenditure on IHG credit card free night. Normally no problem, but I may have slipped a little this year. what with the virus and all.

I’ve just had my annual statement June 2019 to June 2020 showing expenditure of just £9,191 including card fee. I’m assuming I took out the card in June.

In HFP-ers’ experience, have I fallen short, or can I still rescue the free night? I know i can ask IHG, but I suspect HFP-ers will be accurate!

    Thanks.

    • Sundar says:

It tells on the points tracker no ? You have earned a free night (after you have spent 10K in a year.)

      • Anna says:

It shows if you use your online account, it doesn’t show on the app any more, which is annoying. So if Roger only uses the app, he may not have seen his points accruing. But if you want the free night you need to keep track of your spend!

  • Roger* says:

    Thanks, Sundar.

The checker shows ‘Spend £3419.65 this year to earn the free night voucher’. This implies a calendar year, though the ‘?’ says I will receive the voucher on my account anniversary. Earn in a calendar year and see the voucher on the anniversary?

    I admit to being confused.

    • Craig says:

Fairly certain it’s card year not calendar year for both.

      • Anna says:

Free night is card year, it’s elite status that goes off calendar year.

        • Sundar says:

Yes, free night spend is card year and free night available after anniversary.

Need ideas to use vouchers/points before relocation August:
    1. I have about £300 of the 2018 xmas savers. I completely forgot about them, I cant spend that much in Tesco before our move.
    2. I have about 41000 nectar points from cc signups. I dont shop in sainsburys either.

    Any ideas?

    • Harry T says:

Could you buy anything in Tesco Extra to help with your move? Perhaps they sell luggage, or headphones you could use on a flight? Any household items you will need at your new place? Perhaps you could purchase some gift cards for Netflix or the Apple store that you can use online from abroad?

Regarding the nectar points, I guess trains could be worth a look.

    • Peter Kemp says:

You can spend your nectar points in Argos.

    • BJ says:

Get an ipad in tesco, too bad your husband just got you one for your Birthday, return it and pop your debit card in the machine. Best go on a Sunday. Buy a giftcard of your choice at Sainsbury and pay using your nectar points, they may even have Visa if you are happy to take the hit.

    • TGLoyalty says:

Bottle of gin or whatever your poison from either?

You can use the tesco ones for gift cards for a number of retailers including amazon (which last 10 years)

  • Sina says:

Laithwaite 15% off – is this cumulative or should it be in one transaction?

  • Gareth says:

Can the ‘Get 100% back every time up to £100’ with Amex Platinum be used to purchase an M&S gift card online? I don’t see any restriction in the T&Cs.

    Also – is a £100 spend sufficient to get a full £100 statement credit? That’s how I read it…

    Thanks!

    • Andrew says:

Yes to both. In fact you don’t even need to spend £100, you can spend £50, and get £50 back, you can spend £1 and get £1 back and the maximum is spend £100 and get £100 back in total across all of the listed retailers each time you spend. For once it is not in Amex or the retailer’s interest in you spending the full £100 as they are giving 100% back, so there is no requirement to spend the full amount to trigger.

Has anything been said regarding what BA are doing with Gatwick routes yet? A while ago they were supposedly ditching LGW but as far as I know no flights have been moved from LGW to LHR. Interested as booked onto LGW -> DLM late August. A move to LHR would be good for us!

    • Josh says:

Rumours on FT say BA’s LGW short haul base may not re-open for the foreseeable future…

      • Gareth says:

We’ve got BA reward seats to Paphos from Gatwick on 18th July, still supposedly running. Surely they need to make a decision soon?!!

    • Josh says:

LGW to ALC has moved to LHR for July. Tirana has also moved.

  • rams1981 says:

My Amex referral points came through for a recent referral to my wife. Hopefully others now got theirs

    • Secret Squirrel says:

BA First 787-10 delivered to LHR today, looking forward to seeing pics and vids.
