A warning about the Dell / American Express Business Platinum promotion

American Express recently launched a series of promotions to support holders of Business Platinum cards.  We wrote about the Amex Business Platinum cashback deals here.

One of these was the offer of ‘£150 cashback on a £150 purchase from Dell’.

Whilst Dell was clearly hoping that you would use the money towards an expensive new computer, you are free to spend it on whatever you wish from a special Dell / Amex website.  This means that you can put together a £150 package of travel luggage and computer accessories and get it for free.

Or so we thought …..

American Express Business Dell cashback offer

It turns out that if you buy multiple items at the same time, Dell will charge each one separately on your American Express card.  The cashback promotion is NOT cumulative and does NOT pay out unless there is a single charge for £150+ onto your Amex Business card.

I know of two readers who have been hit by this.  The best bit?  Dell will not allow you to return the items you bought because ‘business to business’ transactions are not covered by the laws allowing automatic refunds for online transactions.  So far, neither of the impacted readers has been successful in getting American Express to pay the cashback, even though it is clear that there are multiple same day transactions totalling £150+.

On a similar point, I haven’t yet been able to test whether the offer of ‘£20 cashback on a £20 Currys PC World transaction, valid 10 times’ works in-store or not.  None of the London city centre stores have yet reopened.

It works fine online – here are some ideas of what to buy from Currys PC World for £20 – but if it did work in-store you would have more flexibility to buy gift cards.  The offer runs until the end of the year, so there is plenty of time.
