The new HFP chat thread – Thursday 25th June

We have decided to run this new daily chat thread on Head for Points.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the defacto repository for random comments and questions.  It is unlikely that the news flow will be so big over the next few weeks that we will need many ‘Bits’ articles, however.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are stuck at home self-isolating, we want the HFP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as its keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HFP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/06/25/the-new-hfp-chat-thread-thursday-25th-june/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

We will continue to monitor how this is working.  Let’s see how it goes.  Take care!

I know it was mentioned recently. But does anyone have any useful data points on Amex referral points arriving? Taking weeks and still no show.

Does this look like a tactical move possibly?

    • Rob says:

Apart from Business cards, I haven’t seen any patterns.

      • Chris Heyes says:

Rob@Referrals Same Card to Same Card bonus points seem to post within 24 hours,
in my case anyway. i referred a few of my relations recently, some same card as me some Amex Gold The BA Posted straight away (12 hours)
Referrals to Gold still awaiting although they all went through my link (confirmed by Chat)
The family “ALL” got their 3,000 points,by Supplementing “ME” I now have 6 Supl cards lol
        Looks like that’s the reason

    • Lee says:

Before early June, bonus points always arrive in a few days. But pattern changed since middle of June, 3 referrals none of them show up yet. BJ and other people all have same issue. AMEX definitely changed something.

      • Josh says:

Perhaps they are on to the self referrers.

        • Lee says:

None of them are self referral. This also applies to bonus points delay for supplemental card.

          • Michel29 says:

I have had the same issues on my platinum business card. These were not self referrals and I’ve never self referred in the past. I spoke to AmEx on the phone and they confirmed that the applications were done via my referral link but they cannot add the points manually. The terms state that it can take up to 10 weeks for the points to appear in the account.

        • Craig says:

But are these for people who have self referred in the past?

          • Lee says:

            No, never self referred

          • BJ says:

It’s my dad who is waiting and he referred me. Like Lee, he has never self-referred. My money is on a simple technical glitch, nothing sinister. At worst they might be tired of refer and cancel so they are delaying the points which they are perfectly entitled to do as t&c states up to ten weeks.

          • Sukes says:

Never self-referred. Referred relative from my plat for a gold pref rewards, referral used 15 Jun and no points posted yet. Aware terms state up to 10wks however.

    • MoJack says:

Me too. No show of points recently, not self-referred. Very strange. Although supp bonuses have been posting.
Incidentally, I am waiting for referrals to hit my Platinum card, and am waiting to cancel, but if I cancel- even if my account is still active, I will not be able to redeem the points for 0.9p….🤷🏻‍♂️
Is there any workaround I haven’t thought of?

      • BJ says:

My dad has similar issue with PRG, he will either need to let the annual fee hit or apply for the ARCC before cancelling the PRG. The latter assumes that they will still credit a referral bonus from a cancelled Plat or PRG to a MR account that remains active due to another card.

    • Ash says:

Could it be end of qtr results so holding them back?

  • Michael C says:

    Just seen this:

Khan also pointed to a troubling review of pilot credentials that is bound to reverberate through the country’s airline industry. He said a probe last year found that 262 of Pakistan’s 860 active pilots had fake licenses or had cheated on exams – including an unspecified number of PIA pilots.

  • Nick_C says:

I’ve found chat to be useless. I tried to get two Amex MR accounts merged over a month ago. Spent 25 minutes on a chat, despite providing all the relevant information in my first message (prepared in advance and copied and pasted from Word).

Two weeks later, still had two separate accounts. Phoned and luckily got through to someone based in Brighton. Whole call took less than 8 minutes (although the accounts have still not been merged 🙂 )

    • Nick_C says:

Sorry, that was meant to be a response to John @ 11.01

      • Stanley says:

        I prefer John 21.12

        • BS says:

          Come and have breakfast?

          • Stanley says:

Lovely. See you about 10am. Double everything, hold the tomatoes.

        • Nick_C says:

          How about Luke 21:21

“flee to the mountains, and let those who are inside the city depart, and let not those who are out in the country enter it”

          • Alex M says:

@Nick: this sounds more like Boris 21.05, or whenever the quarantine was announced.

  • Andrew says:

Emails have started to come through from APH, although both to me were diverted to Spam:-

“As you are aware, following government advice we closed our head office and car parks on 1 April and furloughed the vast majority of our staff. As a result, during the last three months we have accumulated tens of thousands of emailed customer queries and refund requests which we have only recently been able to start working through.”

Make that tens of thousands of angry customers complaining that they just grabbed Government furlough money and disappeared for 3 months without considering their customers.

I’m just staggered that with all the negative reviews they still have a TP score of 4.6.

    • Anna says:

Have to say they’ve been better than some companies I’ve been dealing with! I contacted them about 4 weeks ago asking for a voucher as we will definitely use them again, got an email yesterday saying they are issuing a full refund. I hope parking companies don’t go under as there’s little enough competition to keep prices reasonable as it is.

  • BrianN says:

Hi on IHG point and cash bookings – do you earn points on the ‘cash element’? Thanks

    • Genghis says:

No. You’re effectively buying IHG points at the point of purchase with the underlying booking a reward booking. Cancellations are fully refunded in points.

  • memesweeper says:

Random question: are there any lounges open in Malaga (AGP) at the moment? Don’t care about food or drink, I’d like a spot to do some work though.

  • BrianN says:

Hi the Virgin Reward Plus credit card voucher.

When using it for the economy to premium return upgrade (instead of a 241) – do you pay any extra tax etc associated with premium? Or is the upgrade totally free?

    Thanks

    • Rob says:

You definitely need to pay the extra APD because the Government wants that. Not sure if Virgin has extra surcharges for PE vs E?

    • Travel Strong says:

You pay the difference between the cash element listed on the app/site. So you pay the premium cash element, but the economy miles.

Same goes for if you are splitting it (e.g. upgrading just the return leg for 2 people, rather than both legs for 1 person)

  • Oh! Matron! says:

Missing airline food? A write up of the Big Gate Gourmet Sell Off (otherwise known as: we can’t sell this to virgin aus so let’s offload it to the great unwashed)

    https://www.theregister.com/2020/06/25/airline_food_taste_test/

Chunks of protein in slurry. Pretty much describes every economy meal I’ve ever had
