Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The new HFP chat thread – Wednesday 24th June

We have decided to run this new daily chat thread on Head for Points.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the defacto repository for random comments and questions.  It is unlikely that the news flow will be so big over the next few weeks that we will need many ‘Bits’ articles, however.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are stuck at home self-isolating, we want the HFP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as its keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HFP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/06/24/the-new-hfp-chat-thread-wednesday-24th-june/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

We will continue to monitor how this is working.  Let’s see how it goes.  Take care!

Any hotel recommendations for Valencia? I’m thinking of going for a few days in July to visit friends.

Hotel Hospes Palau de la Mar

    • Andrew says:

      Valencia is very walkable.

It all depends on what you are looking for, but we stayed in the Holiday Inn Express Valencia-Ciudad las Ciencias, which is just a few minutes walk from the Science Museum and Oceanographic as well as next door to the Centro Comercial El Saler.

BA Flights LON-SYD – To be helpful to the HFP community, a massive load of avios business class seats were released last night for the key months of Dec/Jan/Feb/March.
Chance to escape the depths of winter here.

I managed to get a nice 6-week trip (to allow for the 2 weeks of quarantine at the Australian end), to be honest it was a bit nerve-racking to commit to 24 hours on a plane in January

As an interesting point, immediately after booking I checked the cancellation options to see if the usual 24-hour grace period still worked. Good old BA told me I could apply for a voucher.

  • Definitas says:

Has anyone had the fee for Amex Gold waived (or offset by points) to prevent cancelling?

    • Chris E says:

Cancelled a couple of days ago. Wasn’t offered any kind of incentive to keep the card.

    • Sina says:

Just cancelled and was offered gold for free for the first year.

  • Baji Nahid says:

I remember some posters commenting about getting the 50% travel voucher emirates had introduced. Anyone got one or is going to get one?

  • GRIMZ says:

Hi Folks, can anyone provide me with my options.
I am booked on a 241 BA flight in business to LA at the start of November spending a week in Palm Desert and then driving to Scottsdale a week later. I am not confident that I want to go now with the Covid19 numbers rising in Arizona. I want to go the same time next year now but will BA give me a voucher to cancel my flights in November? Or do I just sit and wait for now?

    • pauldb says:

BA will only give you a voucher for flights up to August. You might as well wait and see if they extend that or cancel your flight, unless you’d rather cancel now for a modest £35 each and rebook something else currently available. Does your 241 last until Nov 2022 (with the six month extension)?

      • GRIMZ says:

No it only lasts until the end of May and I probably wouldn’t use it before then.

        • pauldb says:

          Is that the extended expiry?

If that’s the case I would do nothing for now. As well as your risk tolerance, the US may continue its ban until the election.

  • Dave says:

Just had a cancellation come through for the return portion of a flight booked in August to Singapore. Booked with a 2-4-1 that expires in April 2021. Am i right in thinking i can get a full refund now without paying anything?

  • Steven says:

Rob – did you have any luck with AMEX reimbursing you for the Currys in store voucher in terms of the Bus Plat. offer? Thanks

    • Rob says:

The Currys near us isn’t open yet. None of the London city centre ones were open last time I checked, only the ones which need a car to get to.

  • Jack says:

Anyone had difficulty getting Virgin reward flights come up on their website for routes like EDi-AMS-MCO? Cash price displays okay but when you switch to miles it displays an error.

Redemption searches are okay from LHR but that’s about it – and availability is poor!!
