Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The new HFP chat thread – Tuesday 23rd June

We have decided to run this new daily chat thread on Head for Points.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the defacto repository for random comments and questions.  It is unlikely that the news flow will be so big over the next few weeks that we will need many ‘Bits’ articles, however.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are stuck at home self-isolating, we want the HFP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as its keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HFP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/06/23/the-new-hfp-chat-thread-tuesday-23rd-june/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

We will continue to monitor how this is working.  Let’s see how it goes.  Take care!

Curve withdrawing cash on Hilton keeps getting blocked due to “fraud” despite buying something also with Curve-Hilton in person a few minutes before. Shortly after put 1K into the treasury and it went through.

    • Sina says:

Do you know how long does it take to for NS&I transactions to become “cleared” in my account?

      • Michael says:

I want to say eight days but could be a day less.

      • Pablo says:

        7 days

      • Lee says:

Is there a cap on NSI transaction using curve? per day, per week?

      • Des says:

It clears on the 6th working day.

      • Nick_C says:

I thought it was seven banking days – so pay in today and you cannot withdraw until Thursday next week. Could well be wrong, but the website says 7 banking days. And if you pay into an Income Bond today the deposit will be pending until July 5th (backdated though)

Also, it takes a day to get money out. Request a Faster Payment Out today, and you will get it tomorrow.

    • kevbar says:

I keep getting blocked for curve cash withdrawals (with John Lewis not Hilton), curve claim they can’t even see them, but everything else works fine.

    • BJ says:

With both the changes and uncertainty I now find Curve more trouble than it’s worth. Parked it for a while.

    • Pid says:

For the NS&I payments due you get charged a fee?

  • Adam says:

Just tried booking a Singapore airlines flight via Virgin Flying Club and received a message stating ….

“ Thank you. I am sorry to say we have temporarily suspending making bookings on Singapore airlines. We hope to start making bookings soon.”

Anyone aware of this and why?

  • David says:

Virgin Flying Club Gold Line “unavailable”, online chat defaulting to “send us a text” and texts defaulting to “an agent will contact you” (several hours ago). Refund agreed on 21 March (up to 90 days) still not posted despite being “escalated”. Is VS about to go into administration?

  • Rts says:

I thought I’d share this IG post here! The second clip and the final 😳😳😳…

I have Melia points expiring soon and I am not sure I will be able to use them. I recently saw that you can exchange them for Amazon gift cards. I wanted to know if it is worth it? I did buy MeliaRewards when they were on offer for 40k for 144Euros.
So my question is if I was to exchange 40800 points to a £120 amazon gift card is that good value, or should I keep my points in case I can book a stay? Thanks

    • Rob says:

Doesn’t paying Euro 5 for another 1000 points reset the expiry?

      • youngtraveller says:

It does indeed, thanks!! It was mentioned a few times on this site as well!

  • Jeff 99 says:

Staycations are on from 4th July then. Great news.

Just need to do a bit of research and find out which places won’t be overrun by yobs.

    • Jeff 99 says:

I definitely won’t be queuing up to get into a pub or restaurant though. Sounds awful. Drinking in the park with no restrictions or rules it is!

      • Rob says:

Queueing has been ‘the thing’ at hip London restaurants for the last few years. Taking bookings is so last century. You’re meant to queue up in the street for an hour (if lucky, they will take your mobile number, let you sit in a nearby pub and give you 5 minutes to make it in once called). It’s how you maximise your profitability.

It also stops the fairly common, unfortunately, London practice of booking multiple restaurants for the same time slot and deciding at the last minute which one you’re going to go to …..

        • Jeff 99 says:

“ Queueing has been ‘the thing’ at hip London restaurants”

I prefer to do what I want and think for myself rather than be swayed by what “the thing” is 🙂

        • Anna says:

          That London! 🤣

          • Jeff 99 says:

Do people in other parts of the UK (I’m from London) also worry about doing “the thing”? 🤣

          • Anna says:

Trendy youngsters in university cities probably do but I’m in the “life’s too short” category now.

        • Chris Heyes says:

Rob@Avoid London like the plaque just toooo many people milling around.
Been 3/4 times in 72 years (unless you call Heathrow, Gatwick, or Trains Blackburn-Bognor Regis)
London Marathon many years ago (1970s)
          1960s London was good
I tend to try to avoid all Capitals much to crowded

    • Anna says:

It’s great news, I have booked a posh lodge with a hot tub in the wilds of Northumberland and plan to take a week’s worth of gourmet food and wine. Though I’ve just realised I haven’t checked if they have wifi 😬

Are e-rewards and rewardsforthoughts owned by the same company? I have had an e-rewards account since 2012. I signed up for rewardsforthoughts in Jan 2019 thanks to HfP making me aware of it. I was happily completing surveys with them until 12 May 2020 since when I’ve not had any invitations to complete surveys.

On Sunday when I successfully logged in I had a big message on screen saying that my Avios and BAEC number don’t match, please check my profile. This was weird as I have never had an Avios account. Anyway I checked and the BAEC number in my rewardsforthoughts profile matches my BAEC a/c so I contacted them asking if there was an issue as I haven’t had any surveys to complete..

Yesterday I received an email reply stating:
“Unfortunately, the accuracy and attentiveness of your account activity has been flagged, and upon review of your account, we have been forced to suspend your account. As a member of our program you may only have one account, provide accurate profile information and survey responses. You must also be thoughtful and attentive in responding to our surveys. When we have concerns about any of these program rules we are obligated to take steps to investigate and unfortunately suspend accounts.”

I am surprised by this as I have never done anything other than answer the surveys diligently. I used to get screened out 3 times out of 5 surveys so I don’t think I’ve been doing anything untoward. I also only have one rewardsforthoughts a/c but it struck me this morning that I do also have the e-rewards a/c. Is this the reason I’ve been suspended from rewardsforthoughts?

It is weird as I can still log in to the account so I’ve not actually had the account closed down. If I deactivate my account do you think it is possible to re-register in a few month’s time using a different email address?

It was a nice Avios earner for me especially since I stopped flying in Feb and my spending on my BAPP has reduced significantly.

    • Rob says:

      I believe they are, yes.

      • AJA says:

Thanks Rob I wondered as the layout of both websites now look very similar. Oh well. it was a nice earner while it lasted. I liked the way I earned Avios which credited directly to BAEC after a couple of days.

I will stick with the e-rewards although it is less flexible as you earn points and then can redeem them for Avios once every 30 days. At least you do get credit for just clicking on the survey even if you subsequently get screened out.

        • Baji Nahid says:

i used to do em all the time, i stopped in october 2019 after they hacked me off and didnt give me my points.

Yes some other readers have had this. We are supposed to be going in August, it was my (re-arranged) 50th birthday trip! Is the IC Park Lane closed? Wondering about alternatives now. Probably be a cash stay as I’ve spent virtually nothing on celebrations yet.

      • Anna says:

It’s typical the IHG point stay bargains have now gone!

      • Ian says:

Not sure about the IC Park Lane. I was due to stay at the Langley for my 40th birthday. Sad to see they may not reopen for such a long time

      • Ronald Jeremy says:

Good news the rose and crown is opening in Langley, but i’m not sure whether that’s KIngs Langley or Abbots Langley, though I know that the De Vere is opening in Abotts Langley
