The new HFP chat thread – Thursday 18th June

We have decided to run this new daily chat thread on Head for Points.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the defacto repository for random comments and questions.  It is unlikely that the news flow will be so big over the next few weeks that we will need many ‘Bits’ articles, however.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are stuck at home self-isolating, we want the HFP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as its keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HFP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/06/18/the-new-hfp-chat-thread-thursday-18th-june/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

We will continue to monitor how this is working.  Let’s see how it goes.  Take care!

And for pity’s sake, people can go to Primark and B & Q in droves, and travel abroad, but the government can’t say if it’s safe to be in a caravan or holiday cottage! The domestic tourism market is going to be utterly doomed at this rate.

    • J says:

Doesn’t matter. For Cummings bringing the country to its knees and economic catastrophe isn’t a bad thing, for him disruption and disaster is apparently a good thing so he can reinvent things, smash the status quo and “liberal elites”. Unfortunately for him a lot of people in history have had similar ideas and it doesn’t usually work out.

      • mark2 says:

What a vivid imagination you’ve got!

        • J says:

Cummings views are not a secret – read his blog or any of what’s reported about him and his motivations for being so obsessed with Brexit, destroying the BBC etc. Even if you think he’s got some good ideas he’s obviously a fruitcake and shouldn’t be anywhere near the levers of power. Unfortunately the humiliation goes on – when was Britain’s national standing last this low? But, as said before this kind of “disruption” in his world view is no bad thing.

          • BJ says:

Interesting snippet on Brexit today: if Bolton is to be believed only Trump and him were all that bothered about it whilst the rest of the administration were disinterested or unenthusiastic. Does not bode well for the future, even if Trump is returned for a second term.

          • J says:

The UK out of the EU is simply less useful to the US (and Japan, Australia etc). Brexit might have some populist appeal to Trump but that’s about it. The US is the stronger party, no US administration is going to give the UK a good deal because they don’t need to. It’s telling that the US won’t even extradite a US citizen who commits manslaughter on British soil (it would be absolutely unheard of for any EU country to behave in this way – this is the type of dispute the UK has with Russia, Iran etc) so yeah zero chance of the US doing anything to help the UK out after Brexit.

    • Chris Heyes says:

Anna@The Government can’t say its safe, because it isn’t even if they did say it’s safe it isn;t
surely people people must know by now this virus is “NOT” safe
They said it’s safe for children to go back to school but just been a spike in children catching it

      • Anna says:

If it’s safe to be in your own home, it’s safe to be in self-contained holiday accommodation. And much safer than going to school, which we are told is safe!

      • Lady London says:

The issue with children is not them catching it. Most of them are barely affected by it.
The issue is schools and children are a sink of infection swaps.
How many of us have homes where as soon as a child goes to school. they bring home a continuing array of every infection that’s going? Strict hygiene measures have to be enforced by a home with any child going to school, as they are such amazing disease transmitters.

One lady I worked next to, her kid had recently started school, every virus or other ailment her child brought home tried to transmit itself to me (luckily I had a very good immune system but they all tried to attack me) whereas she, herself, caught nothing.

    • Rhys says:

A lot of things are utterly doomed at this rate. Tourism, theatres, cinemas, musicians, concert venues, gyms, education, bars, clubs….

Social distancing is pretty much impossible for 90% of the things that make life interesting. Most of us are social animals and we have been creating social experiences for the last 50,000+ years!

      • Mutley says:

Absolutely, largely thanks to the clown who is nominally in charge

  • Dragonfly says:

Could someone please confirm this for me, re sign-up bonus? I have been referred to Amex Plat. Rob said in a few articles that people who have had a personal Amex in the last 24 months (not Amex BA plus card) would not be eligible for the sign-up bonus. I had an Amex SPG before (now became Amex Marriott Bonvoy), and cancelled it in August 2018. Does this mean if I applied for the Amex Plat now (June 2020) I would not be able to get the sign-up bonus? Thanks.

    • Genghis says:

You’d get sign up. General rule is if any Amex in last 24 months no sign up. Except Plat where’s it’s any MR earning card and BAPP any avios earning card in last 24 months.

      • Dragonfly says:

Thanks, Genghis, for your reply. So, what you say is that I should get sign-up bonus for Amex Plat, if apply – even though my cancelled Amex SPG (now re-brand Marriott) was less than 24 months.

        • BJ says:

Yes, that’s what he is saying. You get the bonus because SPG/Bonvoy are not MR cards.

  • Baji Nahid says:

I noticed that the folk at the club For BAEC members are bored and sent another email the other day of a new issue of the club, bless em, does anyone read the issues?

I’m sure its not been a month since the last one. Also does anyone enter their competitions by any chance?

    • Peter K says:

Are there competitions? I don’t know as I don’t read them!

    • Vit says:

haha. Bless me too as I have entered pretty much all of the competitions they sent out. 😛

      • Lady London says:

If you can, get hold of the one they send out to higher tiers.
For sure Gold, has more offers in than the one sent out to anyone Bronze or Blue.
And yet, those offers or promos etc. in the Gold newsletter, will often be fine for lower tiers to use. The lower tiers just do not receive the information in their newsletter.

I don’t know if they send out anything higher level than Gold, they may sent out another different even better one to GGL.Or Gold may have everything in it.

        • Baji Nahid says:

Thanks so much Lady London, I had no idea but I will ask around and see if any of our GGL members here may be willing to share the link. Im just on a basic blue so now i will keep an eye out.

          Thank you.

      • Baji Nahid says:

did you get the anagram ones? I am stuck for what animals they could be 🙁

        • Cat says:

Post them here – I might be able to help! I don’t seem to have the email.

    • BJ says:

ISTR a reader posting a few years ago they won a good prize but I cannot recall what.

  • Liam says:

Anyone have any insight on how long Virgin refunds are currently taking to process? I have a couple of LHR-LAX flights in August (booked with points) that I need to cancel. I assume the points should come back to my account pretty quickly but I might be waiting a while for the taxes/charges. Is this likely to be a matter of weeks or months?

    • Rhys says:

Longer than it ought to be. At o e point they were advising “within 120 days” which was slightly outrageous

  • @mkcol says:

Anyone fancy a bit of a plane?

    https://www.planereclaimers.co.uk/shop/

    • yorkieflyer says:

I remember once reading that to buy all the spares to make a Golf Mark 2 would cost five or six times the retail price,I think we are in this sort of territory here if you look at the scrap value of a hull

  • Waddle says:

Hi team, I know things been asked before – do cash withdrawals on Virgin via Curve work as desired?

    • BJ says:

I think that all depends what you desire Waddle; a few extra £20s in my case but it hasn’t worked yet..

    • Travel Strong says:

Late March it was still fine for £200/month. That was my last withdrawal on CRV+Virgin as I then got the IHG card and it makes more sense to do it on that.

  • Baji Nahid says:

AMACPIVETS, What 2 animals could you get from this anagram? :S

    • Cat says:

Is it that those letters can be rearranged in two different ways, one for one species of 10 letters, one for the other species of 10 letters, or is it that the letters are divided up, and together the two names have 10 letters (as in – one animal has a 4 letter name and the other has 6)?

I keep going back to palm civet , and now that I’ve seen that it almost fits, I can’t unsee it!

    • Louie says:

I cheated and used an online anagram solver. Nothing. BA probably can’t spell.

  • Paul says:

For those that have taken out pet insurance policies with Tesco under the recent offer, beyond the initial first page coming through from MSE, was there any other mention during the application process of the Clubcard points incentive?
