The new HFP chat thread – Wednesday 17th June

We have decided to run this new daily chat thread on Head for Points.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the defacto repository for random comments and questions.  It is unlikely that the news flow will be so big over the next few weeks that we will need many ‘Bits’ articles, however.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are stuck at home self-isolating, we want the HFP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as its keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HFP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/06/17/the-new-hfp-chat-thread-wednesday-17th-june/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

We will continue to monitor how this is working.  Let’s see how it goes.  Take care!

I wonder if anyone can confirm if I am within my rights here:
I booked a BA flight with Amex Travel back in Feb which was cancelled and I opted for a voucher. Two days ago, I used this voucher towards another flight (ABZ-LHR-YYZ) departing 1st Jul. Yesterday I was informed by Amex Travel that the LHR-YYZ flight had been cancelled. Called them today to figure out options. My travel date is fixed since I am permanently relocating. BA offered a re-routing ABZ-LHR-ORD-YYZ with an overnight in ORD. This obviously doesn’t work for me as I cannot enter the US. I asked to be rebooked on KLM’s ABZ-AMS-YYZ instead. Amex Travel have now come back saying BA have refused and saying I am only entitled to a rebook on any other airline if the cancellation is within 24hrs of original flight. Is this correct? I assumed I was entitled to a rebooking on any airline as per the EU rules.

    • Anna says:

EU261 applies here. I think you would be within your rights to insist on your choice of re-route, not least because BA can only offer a re-route via the USA, which as you say, you are not even allowed to enter! (You wouldn’t even be allowed to board your flight at LHR so this is a totally ridiculous suggestion). BA are being pretty outrageous here, and Amex Travel downright clueless. I would get back onto Amex travel and get this escalated immediately.

      • nomad26 says:

Thanks Anna, I will get back on the phone with them right away.

    • Lady London says:

It’s tosh and BA needs to provide a flight on any airline with close departure and arrival times. I would defo not accept adding an overnight into the journey.

Go for KL or any other airline that suits but try to use the basis of that being the closest similar departure time and not extending travel time unacceptably like BA’s proposal.

The wording in EC261 is highly readable as to what is acceptable.

Remember also that BA has made a commercial decision to cancel a lot of domestic flights, they are adults and it is up to them to have assessed the impact on the. ub terms of them now being obliged to reroute you reasonably according to EU261.

Even if I could access the US currently, the only reason I’d even consider BA’s proposal would be if I wasnt already in J and they upgraded me. Plus paying all food, transport and hotel in ORD which BA is not obliged to do curreny due to the change having been notified more than 14 days ahead.

Have Curve effectively given up on displaying correct card images – its been well over a year and still Nat West Debit, Barclaycard Platinum, and of course Capital On Tap Visa all still have incorrect card images despite me sending the jpg and number ranges as requested by support. Anyone got any others for the list 🙂

My IHG Premium card shows as a Marriott Rewards Card image

    • the_real_a says:

Sometimes this is caused by the same bin number being used across multiple card products. There are often multiple images storage against each bin in Curve but you need to select the correct one:

Wallet -> Click the cog under the problematic card -> change card image

Had flights booked with Aer Lingus from BHX to SNN on 31.7.20 returning on 2.8.20. Received an email on Monday which went into the junk folder as it was from schedchange@aerlingus.com detailing a change of schedule for the flight out with a significant time change but even more significantly making the flight from LHR to DUB! No mention of the flight having been cancelled. Telephoned Aer Lingus who still wanted us to accept the change but eventually admitted that the original flight had been cancelled and therefore we have taken the refund option. A disingenuous attempt to avoid communicating a cancellation and refund rights.

    • Anna says:

Good grief, that makes BA look reasonable in classing both LHR and LGW as “London”! Aren’t Dublin and Shannon well over 100 miles apart?!

    • ankomonkey says:

Eurowings did that to me. When I got them on the phone I just quoted the flight number of what I booked and the flight number of “my original flight with its new timing” which was a completely different flight number, and they conceded immediately that my original flight was actually cancelled rather than just the timing change the e-mail stated. If I hadn’t known to check then they would have had me…

    some news from norwegian

Norwegian is pleased to announce that in line with other European carriers and as a result of increased customer demand the airline will begin to operate flights between London Gatwick to Oslo, London Gatwick to Copenhagen, Edinburgh to Oslo and Edinburgh to Copenhagen from July 1st.

    https://media.uk.norwegian.com/pressreleases/norwegian-to-restart-short-haul-flights-from-the-uk-and-serve-a-wider-european-network-from-july-3013933

    • ChrisBCN says:

Cue all the responses about how Norwegian is the next to go bust, as has been the familiar trope for too many years now…😂

      • Doug M says:

In fairness it pretty much has previously gone broke, the ownership is substantially now just the creditors. It’s just like Trigger’s broom.

        • Rob says:

Exactly. The existing shareholders have been wiped out and the creditors now have full control. It is flying 8 short haul aircraft around Norway, that’s it.

Bit of an Oops moment between a Logainair jet and ex Flybe Q400 at Aberdeen yesterday evening…

Do you receive additional points for adding a supplementary card to the gold of business Amex?

    Thanks

    • Dezbez says:

John – have a look at yesterday’s chat, there’s plenty of discussion about supplementary cards so this may be covered there

    • The Streets says:

      No

I have some redemption BA flights booked to Nice for later in June for my wife and I and our 22 month old son. The outbound has been cancelled so I am entitled to change the dates and am looking to book in for later in the year/early next year. The issue is – our son will be over 2 by the time we will be able to fly.

Are BA likely likely to offer a third seat for free in this (admittedly slightly niche) situation?

Also if I rebook am I entitled to change the dates again going forward depending on how the travel situation evolves?

    • Anna says:

I don’t think you’d be entitled to a third seat but you can call BA and see what they say (and hope you don’t get one of their “computer says no” CSAs). Changing your re-booked flights will depend on the Ts and Cs at the time you make the new booking, and the reason for any future change. Obviously avios flights are cancellable up to 24 hours before, you might be stuck with a cash booking unless BA cancels or changes it in the future, or it comes under one of their “book with confidence” type arrangements (there are so many different re-booking/voucher etc options at the moments I can’t keep up with them all!)

      • Anna says:

Apologies, I missed where you said redemption booking – these should come with the usual Ts and Cs. I have been told in the past by BA that once a change is made to a flight it can’t then be altered again, but they rarely tell the truth IME!

    • Genghis says:

I’m sure I read a HfP comment towards the start of COVID about BA giving a replacement seat for free to babies if replacement flight is when they turn two. YMMV is my best guess.

We now book a seat for our now 15 month old, however. So much easier.

Trying to book a car with Hertz in Europe. If I log in it says “call for quote”. If i dont, and search as a guest, all the prices come up. Any way around this ? I want to make the most of my Plat discount and President’s Circle status…… Thanks

    • EwanG says:

Rob has run an article before (written by Charlieface) so search for that. In short, book when logged out using Aus or Brazil using the Amex CDP.
You can also then update your booking so it’s linked into your account. I have commented on it before, a posting on Flyertalk had details.

    • Zumodenaranja says:

I would just call them tbh.

The Hert UK telephone team is based in Ireland and they are some of the most helpful agents I’ve ever dealt with…

      • Lady London says:

+1. They often know of other promotions and might be able to get you a better price.

    • Charlieface says:

You probably have some funny setting in the insurance section of your account. It should be for Europe: CDP and TP included, Super Cover and PLI excluded.
It’s best to be logged in, then you get all the upgrades, that’s even if you’re not Five Star or Presi.

      • Stanley says:

Thanks. That does work, but also increased the price for cover I have already via my Amex Plat…. The best way to do this ive discovered, is to find the best price while not logged in, then log in on a separate browser…. Then go back to first browser window and refresh it, and voila, you are logged in, with the same price as before, and your profile details all entered for you…..
