Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The new HFP chat thread – Tuesday 16th June

We have decided to run this new daily chat thread on Head for Points.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the defacto repository for random comments and questions.  It is unlikely that the news flow will be so big over the next few weeks that we will need many ‘Bits’ articles, however.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are stuck at home self-isolating, we want the HFP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as its keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HFP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/06/16/the-new-hfp-chat-thread-tuesday-16th-june/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

We will continue to monitor how this is working.  Let’s see how it goes.  Take care!

Rob did the Currys instore purchase trigger the Amex £20 offer?

    • Rob says:

Haven’t tried it yet. Good point though. I will try to visit one on Thursday when I’m next let out into the community – there is one very close to where I am today but I don’t have the card on me.

      • Fred (Your comment is awaiting moderation) says:

You don’t need the physical card – you can add the card details to your iPhone (for use with Apple Pay)

You don’t know the card details? Call your better half at home!

    • Charlieface says:

Datapoint: didn’t seem to trigger on Currys Business online (came through as PC World Business)

      • Fred (Your comment is awaiting moderation) says:

NEVER use Currys Business – it’s just a front for charging even higher prices than normal.

        • Pat the Postie says:

agree, you can get a vat invoice at any normal till if you ask

        • Charlieface says:

I know, but this particular item wan’t sold by Curry’s

    • BP says:

Woul;d love to know the answer. Still haven’t spent my 10 x £20.

  • Ant says:

just for info: we had flights booked for Greece on 2 seperate booking. LHR-Santorini Club 40,000 avois & £50 and Mykonos – LHR Eco 20,000 £35.
We don’t want to go – so cancelled online for a voucher, which arrived by email wihtin 10minutes.

Then called BA & booked LGW-Malta Club and Malta-LGW eco.for dates when avios was availability. The way it was done, the BA lady on the phone booked me as normal and i chose the option of £85 & 55,200 avois than she made a note of my voucher numbers. i had the feeling she would only book me on flights with avios availability.

Today i noticed than in my executive acc there is -55,200+60,000. So the difference in avois went back to my account and not another voucher which suits me fine.

There is an article in today’s FT (and a lot of chat online) about United Airlines using their MileagePlus program as security for a $5bn loan. The MileagePlus loyalty program has over 100 million current members; generated $5.3 billion revenue, $1.8bn EBITDA and 34% margin in 2019; and has been valued at as much as $19.5bn. It does feel like a loyalty programme with an airline attached. It feels like a good HfP article in the making.

    • Rob says:

These articles are generally nonsense. How much do you think MileagePlus is worth if United disappears? The ‘valuation’ is just in creative accountancy between the programme and the airline.

Air Canada Aeroplan is the best example. Air Canada sold it for a fortune, cancelled its contract with the programme and then bought it back for virtually nothing (because it was a dead duck without the airline).

      • Isolde says:

Still sounds like a good article – your insight into their value and to show how they can prop up airline finances when used creatively.

  • ian_h says:

Virgin Credit Card – Spend tracker is it just me who thinks it would be really useful if there was a year to date spend tracker in the Virgin Money app/website to track spend against target (to be fair its one thing creation does well!) perhaps the “flying club” tile would be a good choice rather than just telling me how many miles i earned on the last statement 😉

  • mutley says:

There has been a prefusion of hotel points offers recently, can the collective wisdom at HfP shed any light on any potential offers in the pipeline for Virgin Flying club points and also any sign up deals upcoming on the Lufthansa credit card?

    • Rob says:

      No 🙂

Affiniture / Diners won’t talk to us so you’re never going to get any scoops on that.

  • mutley says:

    ahem… Profusion

  • Stanley says:

Why are BA emailing me to remind me that I can change my August flight bookings to Spain ?? Not cancelling the flight, just letting me know how superchill they are about moving dates and destinations. Hopefully just trying to flush people out then run fewer planes there. I want to go to Spain ffs !

    • Anna says:

No it’s to try & get you to take a voucher before they cancel the flight & are legally obliged to refund you!

      • Stanley says:

aaaaah. or reroute me hopefully !?

        • Anna says:

Hmm they offered me a re-route from MAN to LGW. I didn’t take it but suspect strongly that the LGW departure (to AGP) won’t be happening either.

          • Stanley says:

20th August to Palma. Im staying positive (deluded) it will still happen

        • Lady London says:

@Stanley yes reroute you as well if you prefer.

But BA is hoping you don’t know you have the right to that

  • J says:

If I book return ticket to the UK with a <2 week stay would I be incriminating myself? The whole point of my trip may just be to visit relatives and stay at their address after all..

    • Anna says:

I’m pretty sure you’re allowed to do that if you’re returning home before the 14 day period is up.

    • Lady London says:

No that’s fine. You can leave the UK in less than 14 days. Noting you were supposed to be quarantining for any days up to Day 15 before you see anyone you love. So I am not sure how your plans would fit.

      • TGLoyalty says:

“The only friends and family who you can have contact with are those who travelled with you or people who you are staying with.“

        And

“ The people you’re staying with do not need to self-isolate, unless they travelled with you or you develop the symptoms of coronavirus.”

        It perfectly fine.
