Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The new HFP chat thread – Friday 12th June

NOTE:  There is no additional content today because the three articles we were going to run today went up during Thursday, as we know you wouldn’t want to wait to hear about the BA status extensions.  We need to let the email readers catch up.  Normal service resumes on Saturday!

We have decided to run this new daily chat thread on Head for Points.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the defacto repository for random comments and questions.  It is unlikely that the news flow will be so big over the next few weeks that we will need many ‘Bits’ articles, however.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are stuck at home self-isolating, we want the HFP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as its keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HFP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/06/12/the-new-hfp-chat-thread-friday-12th-june/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

We will continue to monitor how this is working.  Let’s see how it goes.  Take care!

This might sound a strange question but My Partner has a Gold Amex Rewards Credit Card
I have BA Amex plus BA Executive member. of course
Partner is in my Friends & Family list
(also Executive Member but never needed to use her account (if even active now)
Can she go through to Shop in mine but use her Gold Card
Well i know she can, but is there a disadvantage to doing so ? or is she better off going through her own or through Rewards

  • Simon Jones says:

What happens if I transfer my Amex rewards points to Avios and add my wife’s BA exec number in error , will the points transfer or fail, if they fail will I get back

    • Charlieface says:

I have a feeling BA doesn’t work because they match the full name, other airlines and hotels may work. Nectar and Radisson defo work.

  • Matthew says:

Seagulls>curve>IHG still ok? Any max limits or charges? Thanks 🙂

    • JPa says:

No you have to enable Curve fronting which has a % charge worth more than the points….

Latest estimates of the R Rate

    East of England: 0.7-0.9
    London: 0.8-1.0
    Midlands: 0.8-1.0
    North East and Yorkshire: 0.7-1.0
    North West: 0.8-1.0
    South East: 0.8-1.0
    South West 0.8-1.1

So R for England is going up. And London is not clear of Covid-19 as some seem to think.

Have a BAPP which has a renewal date at the start of September 2020. When does the annual fee get charged? Having already earned the 241 voucher during the current year, do you think if I managed to spend 10K(!!!) between renewal date start of Sept and 30th Sept the new voucher earnt would get the 6 month extension?

    • Secret Squirrel says:

Annual fee charged by the end of the first month in Y2.

    • Anna says:

Annual fee generally gets charged in your next statement after renewal date.
You would need to get in the spend in with a few days to spare as transactions don’t always go through straight away and the voucher can take a few of days to issue (my latest one appeared within 24 hours but that’s not always been the case). Have you got a partner who could get the card now and have a couple of months to earn the voucher?

    • Eugene says:

Aren’t you only allowed one voucher per calendar year. Think I got that from a conversation with Amex CS a while back….

  • Almi says:

I am thinking of applying for a supplement card in aid to reach the £10k spend for the 241 ticket. I am £1.4k away from the target.

I am wondering if they have any bonus avios spend targets when the card is issued? Any info/advice would be appreciated.

    • New Card says:

You get 3000 bonus avios for requesting your first supplementary card on the BAPP, no spend required.
