Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The new HFP chat thread – Friday 12th June

NOTE:  There is no additional content today because the three articles we were going to run today went up during Thursday, as we know you wouldn’t want to wait to hear about the BA status extensions.  We need to let the email readers catch up.  Normal service resumes on Saturday!

We have decided to run this new daily chat thread on Head for Points.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the defacto repository for random comments and questions.  It is unlikely that the news flow will be so big over the next few weeks that we will need many ‘Bits’ articles, however.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are stuck at home self-isolating, we want the HFP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as its keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HFP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/06/12/the-new-hfp-chat-thread-friday-12th-june/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

We will continue to monitor how this is working.  Let’s see how it goes.  Take care!

    @Rob

When can we expect the 2nd article about IHG luxury hotels (first part last week).

Appreciate it’s been a busy week for you but I’m all agog for part 2!

    • Rhys says:

It’s been written but was pushed back by the BA announcements. Expect it in the next week 🙂

  • Javier says:

Any recommendations on where to find rental car insurance for a year? With similar coverage / easy to claim to the Amex Platinum, if possible?

    Thanks!

    • Anna says:

I’ve used icarhireinsurance and insurance4carhire, never had to use them but always got a very reasonably priced policy. Of course it’s been a complete waste of money this year. 😫

      • Polly says:

Yes, we used them when we didn’t have the plat card. Never had to claim, luckily, but good reports on them.

    • Rob says:

insurance4carhire.com – there is another big one as well I can never remember the name of ….

    • Charlieface says:

Questor with the MSE 25% off code is the cheapest at about £30 for Europe annual

    • Rachel R says:

I’ve used Insurance4carhire, and they were good at paying claims.

      • Rich says:

        +1

      • Rich says:

Yep, I had two claims with them and they were faultless. Including one which was paid within 5 days of submitting, during Christmas hols, and with the damage barely having hit my credit card.

        100% would buy again.

I have a claim to make with Chubb on the Plat right now, and it will be interesting to compare.

      • xcalx says:

Also very good at paying cahback prior to the start of a forward dated policy start date :)))

    • aDifferentSimon says:

These policies are just for the deductibles though – so you can’t use them with a US style cover that has no C/LDW. I recall that platinum covers it all.

      • Charlieface says:

There is plenty of policies that also cover the full value of the car. Check moneymaxim.co.uk

  • Sean says:

    Melia buy points bonus

50% “bonus points” on first purchase up to 300,000 (150k bonus) until 12 July. 1000 points = 5euro

However,if booking cancelled after 31 Dec 2020 bonus points lost.

  • Eugene says:

Just spotted a new BAPP offer. 2 extra Avios on top of 1.5 you currently get at selected retailers until Sept. Tesco and Waitrose stand out.
By my calculation if you get a £50 gift card referred to above at Tesco and pay with your BAPP this generates 535 Avios or a 10pct discount. Not bad.

    • Secret Squirrel says:

Shame you do not get clubcard points on gift card purchases or even better.

    • Brian W says:

The Tesco gift card ship sailed a long time ago……….

    • Chrisasaurus says:

Sadly 3.5×50 yields only 175 avios

      • Eugene says:

That was assuming the 150 CC points referred to earlier in the blog were added. Catch up 😊

  • Aston100 says:

    Tesco Pet Insurance.
Purchased late January. Went through the ‘cache back’ site. The purchase did not appear so raised an issue with them a couple of days later.

Tesco points not appearing on clubcard account. Started chasing Tesco after 3 months.
After a further month and several chases the points were finally on my account. After some complaints I received 1k points as a goodwill gesture. I am aware others have fared better with their complaints.

The ‘cache back’ site managed to find the purchase around the time Tesco posted the points.
This £56 became payable yesterday and I have transferred it out.

All in all, 4.5 months to get the points; good will points; £56 ‘cache back’.
I actually needed the insurance for a genuine pet. I bet some of the morally bankrupt people elsewhere managed much better in a shorter time frame for a non-existent pet. Honesty is rapidly becoming no longer the best policy.

    • mark2 says:

Does insuring an actual pet which is already insured with PetPlan make me morally bankrupt?

      • bsuije says:

Absolutely! You should be ashamed of yourself, you scoundrel! Off to jail with you!

(I jest, of course. World’s got bigger problems right now.)

      • Aston100 says:

Dunno, but is that a hint of guilt?

      • Nick_C says:

At least you have a pet! Nothing wrong with insuring it twice.

    • Brian W says:

You should stick to hiding from couriers trying to deliver your packages as you’ve highlighted previously @Aston100, sounds like you get more satisfaction from that than chasing Tesco points and c@shback! Not sure it’s morally right wasting people’s time and fuel either mind you.

      • Aston100 says:

Except there is nothing immoral or fraudulent about standing in my window, staring at couriers. I am not obligated to open the door.
Now insurance for an imaginary pet just to get points and ‘cache back’ …

        • BJ says:

AFAIK, there’s nothing immoral about keeping an imaginary pet as an emotional support animal so if their owners feel the need to insure them…

  • Andrew says:

    Laithwaites.

The 10% funds return from First Direct has disappeared…

But if you have a Mastercard and want a 20% funds return towards your mobile phone bill, there’s a limited time offer on Airtime Rewards.

Remember to give it 24 hours to activate on your Mastercard before placing the order.

    • Andrew says:

Oh, and there’s an extra 50p if you use this code to register the App (not sure if it works for just one person)

      U4CVLG3V

And an extra £1 if you buy the juice within 7 days of registering

    • Nick_C says:

I’ve currently got 15% at Laithwaites on my Amex Rewards Credit Card (but not on PRGC or BAPP)

  • Charlieface says:

Does anyone have any idea how to file a claim for Purchase Protection on a Plat Biz? Can it be done online?

    • Rhys says:

I imagine live chat can take you through it if there isn’t a form on the site

  • Harry T says:

Jet2 fly a couple of direct routes from Manchester, Edinburgh and Newcastle that are potentially very useful, but I find their pricing gouges hard for the privilege (makes sense given their monopoly on the direct routes). Does anyone understand the way their pricing works, in order to secure a better deal? Is it like Easyjet where you have to secure the fares as soon as they are released?
