Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The new HFP chat thread – Friday 12th June

NOTE:  There is no additional content today because the three articles we were going to run today went up during Thursday, as we know you wouldn’t want to wait to hear about the BA status extensions.  We need to let the email readers catch up.  Normal service resumes on Saturday!

We have decided to run this new daily chat thread on Head for Points.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the defacto repository for random comments and questions.  It is unlikely that the news flow will be so big over the next few weeks that we will need many ‘Bits’ articles, however.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are stuck at home self-isolating, we want the HFP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as its keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HFP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/06/12/the-new-hfp-chat-thread-friday-12th-june/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

We will continue to monitor how this is working.  Let’s see how it goes.  Take care!

    Amex query:

Process for Amex supplementary cars is you’re applying one for yourself? Do you fill out the same application with your own details? Would be handy for work expenses

    • Ed says:

Yes, just use normal details – one recommendation, use a different name so you can break it out in the xlsx reports.

  • Iain says:

Anyone else not had their May virgin CC miles not credit?

    • Dezbez says:

Mine is a new card so I didn’t have any in May, but my June ones were due a couple of days ago and they’ve not landed yet. In the past they’ve arrived pretty smartly.
Have you called them to ask?

    • Chrisasaurus says:

Vaguely related q: anyone had their Lloyd’s Avios simply stop crediting? Was it an Avios issue or a Lloyd’s issue if anyone’s had and resolved? Getting nowhere with either

      • Brian W says:

Two Lloyds cards in the household and last month both took two weeks longer to credit to BAEC, but this month they were ok and back to two days max.

    • Simon says:

Mine credited today, Iain, if this helps.

  • bsuije says:

    From the FT:

“Airbus is set to ditch its planned derivatives market for the airline industry in an effort to conserve cash.”

I think I saw some chatter about this on here a while back.

  • Andrew says:

If I have two one-way Avios bookings, can I link them together to one PNR so I would only need to pay 1x£35 if I decide to cancel?

    • Anna says:

BA’s policy has been to refuse to do this in recent years, but you could try ringing and asking. On the plus side, if you want to change one leg, you won’t need to cancel the whole thing and look for new availability in both directions.

      • Michael C says:

If there’s three of us on the same return booking, would the cancellation be:
        a) GBP 35
        b) 2 x 35 (return)
        c) 3 x 2 x 35 (per passenger) ?

        Cheers!

        • Andrew says:

B – if it’s a return booking made on one booking ref it’s £35 per person

          • Andrew says:

Sorry I mean it’s D – the per person for a return booking wasn’t one of your options!

      • Andrew says:

Thanks Anna, maybe I’ll leave it as it is then. I *think* I’m covered by the book with confidence policy anyway, although it’s not overly clear if it applies to Avios bookings and even then if it applies to non-BA flights booked with Avios.

  • Vit says:

Question on Amex Gold CC please:

Do I understand correctly that you earn double MR point while using with airline? I will need to pay for tax&surcharge for award redemption flight with EVA Air.

    Cheers,
    Vit

    • Louise K says:

Yes, airlines spend gets you double points. I have done well well with it over the last couple of years but just ditched it because my points balance was -30,000 due to refunds.

    • Genghis says:

Yes. And triple if an airline in a foreign currency (though you’re paying 3% for the benefit).

      • Vit says:

Ah. Thanks Genghis. That’s good to know.Tax & Surcharge is only ~£100. Not bad for additional 100 MR Point for £3. But Nahh, I will just call their London office to book instead. 😉

      • Harry T says:

Can be worth paying that 3% when the airline refuses to refund you for a cancelled flight, and you want to initiate a chargeback. Amex are the best at this, IMO.

  • Matt says:

Need to fly to Toronto be reunited with my Canadian wife and kids, but I can’t see any BA flights from Heathrow to Pearson next week, when I thought there was a daily flight. Did this get cancelled?

    • Rhys says:

Looks like it was pushed back to July.

      • Matt says:

Well, bugger. Looks like an outrageously priced Air Canada ticket it is, then! Thanks for the info.

        • Rob says:

Nothing on Aer Lingus, KLM etc?

        • Lady London says:

Seen a lot of cheap tickets to Toronto flying on AC, but ticketed by other carriers especially LH.Unsure if in these times they haven’t been pulled but worth a lookround on skyscanner or on Google Flights.

Even if I wasn’t coming back it might work out much cheaper if you buy a return ticket and just don’t use the return,or position it far ahead in case it does turn out you could use the return and would be willing to pay the change fee.

          • Matt says:

KLM or Lufty are the other options, not much price difference. Might book a return for an extra £50 just in case it ends up being useful. Thanks!

  • Kevin K says:

Going to apply for an AMEX PR Gold card today to take advantage of the 20000 point signing bonus. Does anyone know if a referral from someone would still get extra points? The AMEX site says 12000 points bonus which is the one before the boost to 20000 points.

    • Rob says:

You get 22,000 if referred. This is clear on the referral application page.

  • Kai says:

ANA cuts their surcharge heavily. If you booked their flight using your VS miles, you may want to cancel and rebook.

    • Rob says:

Adjust for the cancellation fee and the 100+ days to get your money back from Virgin on the first booking, and you might not 🙂

Keen to hear what the revised taxes are from the UK.

      • Kai says:

According to United’s website, my FRA-HND-LHR is now ~£140 cheaper. Called Virgin to move the inbound date, obviously they won’t refund the YQ in this case but I didn’t have to pay for rebooking given the current waiver.

Yeah don’t trust their refund, and there’s no availability for my outbound anymore, so happy to accept that.

    • YH says:

That’s a shame, I recently got a LHR-HND return in F on ANA using VS miles, paid about £380 or so in tax.

Not risking cancelling and rebooking, got the exact dates I wanted and at least this is a tad bit cheaper than the £11k the normal tickets sell for!

      • Lady London says:

I am jealous. Even in J ANA was great.

Wasn’t someone saying the new ANA First suite ‘The Room’ is the only thing that comes close to the best seat in First on a Middle East Airline(think it was Emirates)

        • YH says:

Looking forward to it even more now! I have flown Emirates F on the A380 and 777 (not the new one) and both of those were great, especially the A380.
