The new HFP chat thread – Thursday 11th June

We have decided to run this new daily chat thread on Head for Points.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the defacto repository for random comments and questions.  It is unlikely that the news flow will be so big over the next few weeks that we will need many ‘Bits’ articles, however.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are stuck at home self-isolating, we want the HFP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as its keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HFP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/06/11/the-new-hfp-chat-thread-thursday-11th-june/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

We will continue to monitor how this is working.  Let’s see how it goes.  Take care!

Just called up Amex to cancel my gold card, they offered £125 on statement balance, then when I accepted they said it is no longer available. Is this a circumstance anyone has come across? Felt quite unprofessional.

    • Crafty says:

No. Very unprofessional. I would consider a complaint, if nothing else for wasting your time!

    • Secret Squirrel says:

Ask for this to be sent to complaints department.

  • Gareth says:

I currently have the BAPP Amex. It has a big negative Avios balance having had a holiday refunded by BA. I’m looking at applying for the Amex Gold Card and then closing my BAPP. Presumably my negative Avios balance will just cancel off when I close the card and I’ll be able to start earning Membership Reward points straight away. Is that right? I presume that if I just downgrade to the free BA card my negative balance of Avios would just carry forward?

    • Anna says:

Yes, MR points and avios are nothing to do with each other so that’s probably your best bet.

  • Alastair says:

Recently booked an avios flight to Dublin (from LHR), however now need to cancel – seems like BA redirecting me to an e-voucher though. Is there still a workaround? And if not are my points refunded immediately? Or essentially tied up in the voucher (which I think I reader suggested happened to them somewhere). Thanks in advance.

    • Alastair says:

Also just to add – when I look to change the dates I am being charged £35 pp, I thought this fee would be waived?

    • Doc says:

If you cancel a flight that is still going (voluntary cancellation), the £35 pp is payable. If it is a cancellation by BA, then that is waived.

  • Sandgrounder says:

My Virgin to Hilton transfer from the 16th May has just arrived.

    • Harry T says:

Thanks, mine just landed too. Hadn’t arrived earlier today.

  • Dezbez says:

Couple of interesting data points re BA flight cancellations from a conversation with them earlier today (apologies if this has been covered before).
I’ve got two bookings which I’m wanting to cancel, one is 100% cash and one is a voucher from a Rewards flight (Avios plus money)
    – these two vouchers cannot be combined ie I can’t use the cash voucher on a future reward booking if I use the PPP voucher
    – the original bookings are for me, my wife and daughter. If I go somewhere on my own (or with a different group eg my friends) I can only use my ‘proportion‘ of these vouchers ie 1/3rd of the value. So each voucher is effectively 3 separate vouchers usable only by that named person.

Not sure if I’ve mis-understood what he said (or been slow on the uptake with some of the previous discussion on here!) but the vouchers seem to be quite a bit more restrictive than I was expecting.

  • xcalx says:

Paying creation ihg card fee free is virgin direct doable or through curve thanks.

  • Michael says:

Not sure if this has been covered before but Collinson (priority pass) also embarked on a redundancy process.

    • Rob says:

Yes, saw this on LinkedIn. Not hugely surprising given their portfolio of businesses.

  • Crafty says:

Has anyone successfully got the full 20,000 points (2 chunks X 10,000) for signing up for the IHG white card before the deadline and spending the required amount? The second tranche seems to be taking an inordinately long time.

    • @mkcol says:

They turned up 2 days after I chased the second tranche which they said would be within 90 days of the target being met.

    • mark2 says:

I got them and had forgotten that they were cming.

    • Matthew says:

Don’t forget the second 10,000 goes directly into your IHG account rather than showing on your credit card statement. Might be worth checking IHG….

      • Crafty says:

Sorry, yes, that’s where we checked.

        Thanks for the data points.

    • Nomad26 says:

Got the extra 10k directly to my IHG account, roughly 3 weeks after meeting the spend target. You should chase it up with them.
