Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The new HFP chat thread – Monday 8th June

We have decided to run this new daily chat thread on Head for Points.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the defacto repository for random comments and questions.  It is unlikely that the news flow will be so big over the next few weeks that we will need many ‘Bits’ articles, however.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are stuck at home self-isolating, we want the HFP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as its keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HFP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/06/08/the-new-hfp-chat-thread-monday-8th-june/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

We will continue to monitor how this is working.  Let’s see how it goes.  Take care!

Hi all my new Miles & More CC arrived today. I was trying to test what it can do but on my 1st attempt it said that I wasn’t registered for Mastercard Securecode. Do I have to call Diners Club to register for that and has anyone had any success previously?

  • Chris says:

Jet2 have now pushed back until July 15th

  • Nate says:

Hi all. Any idea of current timeframe for Virgin to Hilton transfers?

Request went through on 18/5 via virgin using text service.

    Thanks,
    Nate

    • AlexT says:

I put a transfer request around the same time and still waiting. Assume there’s a 10-14 day delay on everything that’s in the queue due to the Flying Club outage.

  • ChrisBCN says:

What app does everyone use for currency transfers?

I have been using Revolut for small amounts Euro to GBP and back but have finally given up with their app, which has now been redesigned so they promote selling my details to 3rd parties… I guess that’s how they are trying to make income nowadays.

    • Lyn says:

There were quite a few comments with currency transfer suggestions a few days ago. Several companies were mentioned, so it may be worth asking again tomorrow morning if you don’t get any other replies this evening.

My sister recently used Transferwise after I’d originally learned about it in the HfP comments a few years ago. And now with borders closed I can’t get to my usual bank branch to make a deposit so I have had to try it as well.

Helpful customer service and the rate and costs are very clearly shown so you should be able to easily compare to alternatives.

      • Lyn says:

Sorry, I’ve realised you are probably looking for points-earning opportunities!

      • Rob says:

Midpoint, as an official Avios currency transfer partner, is the obvious choice.

        • ChrisBCN says:

Thanks for the comments both, appreciated!

Just on a quick 1000 EUR to GBP now –
          TransferWise gets 883.49
          Midpoint gets 877.20 + 88 avios
          Revolut gets 887.25
Other way round gets same pattern, so seems like Revolut still wins unless I’m missing something.

          • Memesweeper says:

You’re missing that Revolut are a barely regulated bunch of …. I would not trust them with money I couldn’t afford to loose. Also their employment practices are less ethical than BA’s.

          • ChrisBCN says:

I don’t like Revolut either! But, to transfer money in, convert the currency, transfer out – my money has been in their grubby mitts less than 60 seconds, so it’s low risk. If only I could find a better company with the same good rates.

      • Clive says:

AZIMO through the site that gives you money back that should not be mentioned is worth a look as currently they are offering £50

  • AndyGWP says:

that’s for the American version of the card (and it’s associated free night)

  • Genghis says:

    For the US card

  • WS says:

Datapoint: received my Qatar status match over the weekend (applied 18 May). They matched my Krisflyer Elite Gold to Qatar Gold, expiring June 2021. Hope everyone gets their matches soon too!

As a separate question, I’ve got a Qatar business flight scheduled for Nov. If it doesn’t get cancelled, I assume it’s still more worthwhile to credit the tier points to BAEC in order to get most of the way to BA Silver, even with the lower Qatar renewal requirements? Has anyone done the calculations?

  • Baresi says:

EY Etihad Guest Gold matched to QR Gold today. Submitted on 20 May, acknowledged on 3 June and approved on 8 June. Tier expiry 7 June 2021.👍 😎
