American Airlines restarts flights to Heathrow from five more US cities

American Airlines has confirmed its plans to add additional routes from London Heathrow.

From 5th August, flights to Charlotte, Los Angeles, Philadelphia and Raleigh-Durham will resume. Phoenix will join these routes from 25th October.

AA is already flying between Heathrow and New York JFK, and this will continue.

In addition to a resumption in international flying, American Airlines is also re-booting its domestic network and hopes to fly at least 55% of its 2019 domestic capacity by July.

To support its domestic operations the airline will be re-opening 11 Admirals Club lounges in 10 cities from 22nd June, including Charlotte, Chicago, Dallas, LA, New York JFK and LaGuardia, Miami, Philadelphia, Phoenix and Washington DC. Lounge service will differ from usual, offering just pre-packaged snacks, although you can expect a full service bar.

To help boost passenger demand, American Airlines has unveiled its ‘Summer of Deals’ promotion which includes double miles on flights before 30th September.

How to earn American Airlines miles from UK credit cards (December 2021)

American Airlines no longer has its own UK credit card.

There is, however, still a way to earn American Airlines miles from a UK credit card.

The route is via Marriott Bonvoy. Marriott Bonvoy hotel loyalty points convert to American Airlines miles at the rate of 3:1. You receive an additional 5,000 miles bonus if you convert 60,000 Marriott Bonvoy points at once.

The best way to earn Marriott Bonvoy points is via the official Marriott Bonvoy American Express card. It comes with 20,000 points for signing up and 2 points for every £1 you spend.

At 2 Bonvoy points per £1, you are earning (at 3:1) 0.66 American Airlines miles per £1 spent on the card. This will increase to 0.83 AA miles per £1 if you convert Bonvoy points in chunks of 60,000 points.

There are rumours on both the BA and AA flyer talk boards about AA moving to T5 rather than moving back to T3. I know it’s more of a medium-long term aim to do this but that is years not months.

Have you heard anything?

Needless to say a lot of the comments from the AA board are about losing the ability to use the QF and CX lounges in T3 and from the BA board that the yanks will make the T5 lounges even busier.

Better connections between AA and BA flights barely gets a mention!

I’ll take a look at the AA deals but I’ve become less enamoured with the US recently and further visits will depend on what happens on the 3rd November.

  Oh that would be a shame, if I’m flying to JFK I will always choose AA to enjoy the far superior CX and QF lounges at T3. The Flagship First Lounge at JFK is also better than the BA First Lounge there. But we all know that unless you’re in the CCR, BA lounges the world over are dire.

    Agree, flights leaving from T3 were always a big bonus! The only downside was the lack of security-free airside transfer when going Domestic to International (unlike T5). Lounges (bar BA and AA) were great though.

Hi all

Am I right in thinking that AA J class flights booked through ba.com will get free seat selection? And the paid J seat selection is only for BA operated flights?

Any confirmation would be great as I am pondering bookings for next year.

    BA are not the only airline to charge seat selection fees in business, and if you actually have a J ticket rather than one of the discount business fare buckets they don’t charge either.

The MO benefit had disappeared by the start of the year. It wasn’t particularly generous – 750 Avios per stay and an upgrade if available at check-in. Fans of MO, Fine Hotels and Resorts or booking via Emyr/ Bon Vivant will generally be a better idea.

        Other OW partners are operating a premium experience in line with what one would expect (given the sum paid) so whilst there are more important things in the world, you’d hope that BA won’t hold to this line indefinitely as there really is not any justification for the same. The lounge issue is perhaps slightly different in that other factors come into play here but still.
