The new HFP chat thread – Sunday 7th June

We have decided to run this new daily chat thread on Head for Points.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the defacto repository for random comments and questions.  It is unlikely that the news flow will be so big over the next few weeks that we will need many ‘Bits’ articles, however.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are stuck at home self-isolating, we want the HFP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as its keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HFP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/06/07/the-new-hfp-chat-thread-sunday-7th-june/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

We will continue to monitor how this is working.  Let’s see how it goes.  Take care!

Hi re the BA Amex Premium – does anyone know how long the ‘six months to spend £3,000 and get the sign up bonus’ will continue to be available to new applicants or is that unknown right now?

I’d rather hold off applying as long as possible as my spending is well down at the moment. Thanks

    • Anna says:

Arghhh I think there was an article on this the other day, possibly end of June? Check though!

    • Rob says:

US ends 30/6. UK website withdrew a similar notice and I am told they do not currently know.

  • Martyn Ford says:

I asked QR on Twitter if their current policies would continue until the end of the year and received an immediate reply:

    Hi Martyn,
Yes the current policy will be applicable until 31DEC20.
    Thank you

  • Steve says:

Anyone tried to cancel an Amex Platinum card lately – any retention offers?
Doesn’t seem worth to keep it at the moment.

    • Rob says:

No retention deals but virtually everyone gets 15-20k if they call up and ask (as long as you get the UK call centre).

      • Steve says:

        Thanks Rob
As a data point, got through to UK who mentioned the waitrose offer, etc , passed to Philippines (I think) who gave me 15k not to cancel.

      • happeemonkee says:

I phoned on Friday Rob and the Brighton call centre agent offered me nothing. She said the 20k points offer was temporary. I’ve had the card for over 10 years and have never churned. Will be binning next month.

        • Rob says:

Hmmmm. Perhaps the £100 deal has superseded it?

          • Idrive says:

I had a doubt while interpreting the £100 account credit. Is it £100 in total or for each of the participating merchants?
I originally thought it was for each but today i thought it is probably cumulated (apple, m&s etc)

          • Alan says:

@idrive £100 in total, can be based on spend at any combination of the merchants involved.

          • idrive says:

            Thanks Alan!

        • Steve says:

I was passed through to the Philippines for cancellation.

        • Tom H says:

+1, got through to Brighton and no retention offered. She even said she had loads of people saying they had seen it on the internet but it wasn’t guaranteed.

          • Steve says:

perhaps it based on longevity of plat, I’m around 18years

  • MoJack says:

    Hi guys
Can someone advise how I can help trigger Amex offers on a couple new cards? I have had the cards open for a week or two, with small spend, but still no sign of offers in the offers section. What can I do to make them appear? TIA!

    • Harry T says:

They seem to appear after a few weeks of spending on the cards. I should note that Amex Offers are very grim pickings at the moment anyway – far less of them than usual, and less useful. This is likely due to the present economic environment. So you’re not missing much anyway! My Gold card often has 30 offers, at least some of which can be used by someone outside of SW1 who doesn’t love jewelery or handbags. There’s just over ten at present, and I’ve been spending a few k a month.

  • Pat the Postie says:

Does anyone know if the Curve metal card charges VAT on its annual fee ie do you get a VAT invoice?

    • Axel says:

You might get a VAT receipt but VAT is 0% on bank / finance charges.

      • Pat the Postie says:

Yes but curve isn’t a bank they confirmed charging vat

  • ChrisBCN says:

Looks like the IAG purchase of Air Europa is going ahead, albeit it’s Iberia doing the buying.

    https://ukaviation.news/iag-owned-iberia-agrees-to-buy-air-europe-for-almost-e1bn/

    • Rob says:

This story makes no sense. IAG agreed to buy Air Europa last year, but it can’t do a thing until it gets competition clearance (well, it could but it takes a massive risk). There is no source for the story and no similar articles showing anywhere. The price quoted is still the same price as mentioned last year even though IAG has said there is a mechanism in place to ask for a reduction. Very weird.

      • ChrisBCN says:

Yeah you are right, no source, no other site is carrying this, even the Spanish business pages. Weird. They can’t be that late in publishing this can they? They should be checking in here 😉

  • Pete says:

Can I top up my Stocks ISA with my Curve card, that is linked to my HSBC Premier World Elite Mastercard? Understand there’s some changes to Curve so not sure if there are any fees incurred now?

    • mark2 says:

May vary between ISA holder and card. The best way is to find out is to try a small amount.

  • BJ says:

Kindle readers: there is a banner on amazon for a new offer providing £3 Kindle credit if you spend £10 on one or more Kindle books by 11 June. Offer needs to be activated prior to purchase.
