You can still earn Avios points when you fly with LATAM

LATAM, the South American airline, left the oneworld alliance on 30th April.

This was driven by a decision by LATAM to partner with US airline Delta, a SkyTeam member, which injected $1.9 billion into LATAM and agreed to take on some of its future aircraft orders.

In retrospect, Delta may be regretting this deal.  LATAM has just filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, meaning that Delta may have to say goodbye to its $1.9 billion.

Until 30th April, you earned Avios and British Airways Executive Club tier points when you flew with LATAM.  This was the standard benefit for flying another oneworld partner airline.

British Airways and LATAM are retaining some codeshare agreements so I expected that some sort of reciprocal Avios relationship would remain, and it is.

If you look at the airline partners page of ba.com, you see that the Avios earning rates remain the same:

Economy – between 25% and 100% of miles flown, based on ticket type

Premium Economy – either 100% or 110% of miles flown, based on ticket type

Business – 125% of miles flown

Domestic flights in Peru, Ecuador, Chile and Argentina are excluded from Avios accrual.

You will NOT earn British Airways tier points on LATAM going forward.  This privilege is only available for flights on oneworld alliance partners.
