The new HFP chat thread – Friday 5th June

We have decided to run this new daily chat thread on Head for Points.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the defacto repository for random comments and questions.  It is unlikely that the news flow will be so big over the next few weeks that we will need many ‘Bits’ articles, however.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are stuck at home self-isolating, we want the HFP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as its keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HFP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/06/05/the-new-hfp-chat-thread-friday-5th-june/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

We will continue to monitor how this is working.  Let’s see how it goes.  Take care!

Any kind souls with a Monese Premium upgrade code?

    Thanks!

  • Jimbo says:

Any thoughts on the 20/21 (European) ski season actually going ahead?

    • Rhys says:

Skiing is actually one of the few things that might actually be quite safe. Everyone is wearing gloves and often some form of facemask/balaclava/snood. There is very, very little skin contact at any point, with the exception of enclosed gondolas, and you are outside in the fresh air. Plus most people ski at least 2m apart!

      • AirCrashInvestigation says:

You seem to forget how the whole thing started in Europe.

        • Rhys says:

It spread in Europe because people from many different countries caught it on holiday and brought it back with them. That would have happened during another holiday period too, but it was February so most holidays were skiing rather than to the beach etc.

Fundamentally, if other leisure travel is permitted there is no reason why skiing shouldn’t be. I can’t see how skiing is more dangerous than sitting on a beach and bar-hopping in Barcelona, except that the weather might have an effect in how well the virus survives outdoor conditions. But again, the majority of skiers are already wearing masks and gloves.

          • GeorgeJ says:

Quite right Rhys. It spread in bars and clubs in ski resorts and was mainly asymmetric spread to people who were largely unaffected and took it home.
Ski resorts should safely re-open, just dont expect the same apes ski.

          • Rob says:

Unless you have two little kids, in which case your apres ski routine will be unchanged – off the slope, back to hotel, wash kids, eat, go to bed 🙂

          • ChrisBCN says:

All being well our beaches will be open properly 2 weeks on Monday 😉

        • ChrisC says:

One of the early cases in the UK was in Brighton.

He had been skiing (and infected a number of people staying with him in the chalet)

BUT before he went skiing he had been to Asia (Singapore i think) which is where it is believed he actually caught it.

          • Chris Heyes says:

ChrisC@ He was i believe the 2nd Known case from Hove i think

          • Polly says:

He sat beside the executive from Wuhan, At dinner! Wuhan should never have sent their chap! now that was bad luck! He was the super spreader…

      • Crafty says:

        Sure, that’s what happens 9am-3pm. I think it’s the 3pm-3am part that’s the problem.

  • xcalx says:

Trying to make an NSandI deposit via Curve getting the message to confirm payment on curve app nothing showing on app, am I missing something. Thanks

    • Doug M says:

On Android despite what it says it’s not in the app, it’s an alert you have to respond to which opens the app. If you open the app there’s nothing.

      • J says:

I tried this morning and it’s pending within Curve, but showing as declined on NSI and not showing in Barclaycard, so perhaps blocked by Barclaycard.

        • xcalx says:

Tried again updated curve app on i phone, App on . No notification from Curve . email from NS&I Declined

          • Rob says:

I had HMRC using Curve Cash declined this morning but then it went though fine linked to a credit card. All very odd.

    • Connor says:

Make sure it’s up to date and the app is open when topping up.

    • MattB says:

It’s flakey as hell, I have to try 4/5 times before I can get the app to play ball so to speak. If nothing happens I just cancel the transaction on the nsandi site and try again.

      • Crafty says:

Delete and reinstall Curve app tends to work for me.

Really poorly implemented by Curve – as usual.

  • Sam says:

Morning all – I topped up revolut with a Lloyds Bank credit card and its come as money purchase/wire order. It was only £10, I’ve immediately paid it off the day it posted online but could this affect credit report negatively?

I think there will be a cash advance fee too but not sure what that will be

    • guesswho2000 says:

No – even if it shows up (which it might) as a cash advance in month, this appearing once off will make no difference to your report on its own.

Cash fee will likely be 3% with a min £3, or similar (so £3 in your case, being greater than 3% of £10).

    • guesswho2000 says:

No – even if it shows up (which it might) as a cash advance in month, this appearing once off will make no difference to your report on its own.

  • TonyG says:

I having difficulty getting through to easyjet on the phone. Any tips?

    • Rhys says:

Are you trying to get a refund?

      • TonyG says:

A voucher for a flight not yet cancelled

        • Rhys says:

Can’t help you there I’m afraid! There is an email you can send for refunds on cancelled flights, however.

        • Bill says:

The voucher is issued for cancelled flights

        • Travel Strong says:

They are also sending out voucher offers before they cancel flights, and rebooking offers with no fees or need to pay the fare difference (any date, and destination in europe) – but this requires calling up.

  • Harry T says:

Please can someone remind of the Newcastle phone number for British Airways? Need to ring about a refund. I do actually live in NCL too.

  • J says:

Not just BA treating employees badly – bad behaviour from Revolut – https://www.wired.co.uk/article/revolut-employment-coronavirus

    • Lady London says:

      I’d fight them.
Looks like if someone has the means and courage and can get the support to go to court, Revolut haven’t got a leg to stand on in several jurisdictions.

If I’d known enough then, I would have known then that the day Hewlett-Packard demanded a 5-10% “voluntary” salary sacrifice was the beginning of the end of any promise of decency being met by them. When that comes along it’s time to get out.

Thanks to the internet this kind of information about what companies are really doing to employees can be shared. It’s pretty naked not just British Airways and Revolut – both of whom have enough money even in these times to treat better those who have to lose their jobs.

Due to impossibility to get them to act on things promptly and frequent reports of unjustified account freezes I had already decided to use Revolut only for money spent immediately ad never to risk large sums with them. And certainly never to risk Business transactions with them. Seeing this report makes that thought a lot stronger.

      • J says:

Agreed – Revolut and N26 should be used with caution, if something goes wrong with either it’s a lot more painful than dealing with a normal bank.

        • J says:

N26 is the biggest and has some uses (their free account gives 3 free ATM withdrawals for example) so I have it as a back up account I guess. You can’t call them and even changing my address was a nightmare – heard lots of stories about people’s accounts being frozen, transferring money abroad especially raising red flags. Commerzbank is otherwise fine for everyday and has a good app, no monthly charges etc and if it goes wrong I can just go into a branch, call someone etc. They also issue an EC card (whereas N26 is a Mastercard). As far as I know only traditional German banks issue an EC card. A lot of (especially small businesses) accept EC cards but don’t accept Visa, Mastercard, Amex – isn’t just an awkward no cards thing, something to do with antiquated tech they still have I think.

      • Aston100 says:

Just want to point out that the HPE salary reduction is both voluntary and temporary in the UK.
For many employees, this is preferable to furlough as there is no guarantee that there will be a role for them in the future once HPE realise that they didn’t suffer too badly in some areas with absent staff.

Always good to have a proper perspective of what is going on.

        • Aston100 says:

…or are you referring to the past, rather than the current attempts to stay afloat in the difficult environment HPE find themselves in today?

  • Harry T says:

I posted this under the relevant article too.

The Radisson flash sale bookings cannot be amended or cancelled online, although the rate terms say they are cancellable until 48 hours before. This is rather inconvenient, as it seems you will have to email the hotel to cancel or amend any bookings.

@Rob may be worth adding this caveat to the article?

    • Rob says:

      Will do.

    • ChrisC says:

I’ve posted in the offer thread as well but there is contradictory info on the cancellation policy

on one page it’s 2pm on the day for the first stay – the date of the booking is listed in that green box

On another page further within the booking it sates in one section 48 hours and in another the 2 PM on day of first stay!

Rob can you get your contacts to clarify
