The new HFP chat thread – Wednesday 3rd June

We have decided to run this new daily chat thread on Head for Points.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the defacto repository for random comments and questions.  It is unlikely that the news flow will be so big over the next few weeks that we will need many ‘Bits’ articles, however.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are stuck at home self-isolating, we want the HFP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as its keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HFP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/06/03/the-new-hfp-chat-thread-wednesday-3rd-june/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

We will continue to monitor how this is working.  Let’s see how it goes.  Take care!

Anyone stayed at the Kimpton in Amsterdam? Thinking of staying prior to an exEU in the New Year.

      • Genghis says:

        Anika even

        • Harry T says:

Thanks. Going to take advantage of the new dynamic IHG pricing.

        • Rob says:

We’ve both reviewed it! I went in the chaotic launch period so they asked us to go back when it had settled down.

    • ChrisC says:

      Very good hotel.

It’s my go-to place to stay in Amsterdam. Very central and walkable from Centraal. Staff very good as well.

One thing is that they have replaced their wine hour with a cocktail in return from a drinks coaster from your room.

I just rebooked two trips later in the year because their (still refundable) rates have come down.

Torn about a bookign for end of july though as I booked a king standard and they have already given me a 2 room upgrade which I might not get if I cancel and rebook even though I’d save close to £100!

      HFP Problems!

      • Harry T says:

        Thanks!

They are offering redemption nights for 25,000 instead of 55,000 points fairly often now that dynamic pricing is in place.

Quarantine: I’m completely confused now, BBC reporting that arrivals into the UK will require 14 days’ quarantine, but it only applies in England and the devolved governments will decide what happens in their regions. So what if the Welsh government decides there will be no quarantine – can we all fly home via Cardiff and avoid it?

    • Matthew says:

Not an issue. As CWL has no or will have very limited flights, it is self quaratined. Owned by the Government, this airport is sadly in teminal decline.

      • Spaghetti Town says:

BA often run aircraft positioning flights between Heathrow and Cardiff. The way the Welsh Government have handled this crisis it wouldn’t shock me if they imposed quarantine for those.

    • pauldb says:

The devolved governments get to decide on enforcement (checks and fines) not on the 14 day principle. If you arrive in Wales and give an address in Wales you follow their checks, but if you are going to isolate in England it doesn’t matter the airport you arrived.

  • Lee says:

    UK announces another 359 deaths.
Can’t believe we are ending lockdown and thinking quarantine anyone come here

    • Rob says:

This is very regional though. There is very little happening in London – literally 20-ish new infections per day (some days are recording zero new infections amongst 15 million people in the London and East region) – and as you know we do what works for London in this country!

      • Roy says:

The MRC biostats people did indeed come up with a figure of 23 new infections per day in London. I’m not sure a lot of people believe that, though.

The ZOE people are estimating 700-1,400 infections a day, which I’m more inclined to believe.

Bottom line, since most infections are mild, and don’t end up requiring hospital treatment, it’s kind of hard to know for sure.

        • TGLoyalty says:

700-1400 is still in manageable levels especially as you say most will have no or mild symptoms.

The goal is to flatten the curve until their is effective treatment or a vaccine. The virus isn’t just going to disappear.

          • Paul74 says:

            Indeed.

          • Roy says:

Just to be clear, that’s 700-1400 per day in London.

Yes, definitely much more managebale than what we had a few weeks ago. The numbers in hospital and in ICU are going down as a result, which is, of course, a very good thing. But these rates are probably still respoinsbile for several deaths per day in London.

          • TGLoyalty says:

Yep Zoe estimates about 11k a day in the UK which is actually down on last week so we are heading in the right direction.

  • Baresi says:

    Qatar Status Match.

Recieved email acknowledgement today that they are looking into my request and will notify once resolved.
I have Etihad Gold Status and applied for status match on 20 May! 🤞 😎

  • Taosuiri says:

The US plans to ban Chinese passenger airlines, retaliating as China hinders US airlines from resuming flights to its country!

  • Stuart Evans says:

My latest ‘We are looking forward to seeing you’ email from BA just landed in my Inbox.

It talks about face masks only lasting 4 hours – implying you might need 3 or even 4 for a long haul flight from when you arrive at LHR and until leaving the final destination airport.

I’m puzzled by that. I thought more durable face masks could last longer and then be reused.

    what do others think?

    • bill says:

if you can get your hands on a theatre mask you might be able to use fewer !

    • BJ says:

They are very unpleasant to wear for prolonged periods.

  • Rob says:

It’s entirely down to Amex unfortunately, this is not a published benefit.

  • Taylor says:

I got 15k yesterday. Took about 3 minutes.
