American Express is rolling out ‘compensation’ deals for Platinum cardholders.

For holders of the personal The Platinum Card, it is fairly simple – American Express is giving you £100.

If you have American Express Business Platinum, this article explains what you are getting instead.

£100 free for American Express Platinum cardholders

Do I get £100 in cash?

No.  Well, sort of.

In order to receive your free £100, you need to spend £100 by 27th August at any combination of:

  • Marks & Spencer
  • Waitrose & Partners
  • Deliveroo
  • Harvey Nichols
  • Apple (online only)

100% of your spending at these shops is returned in the form of statement credit, up to £100 per card.  For clarity, the £100 cap is NOT per shop.  It is cumulative across all five shops above.

What are the restrictions?

There are some, but they are not hugely onerous:

  • M&S exclusions: Bank and Energy services, Bureau de change, Opticians and Petrol stations
  • Waitrose & Partners exclusions: Cellar, Florist, Garden, Pet, Cookery school, foreign currency, Gift Section
  • Harvey Nichols exclusions: International delivery, gift cards, vouchers and dining within restaurant
  • Apple exclusions: Apple iTunes, Apps and Apple Music, Apple Search Ads, Apple Finance and Gift Cards

Here is a key thing to remember.  Waitrose gift vouchers can be used at John Lewis department stores, either online or instore.  If you can get to a Waitrose store but do not want to spend £100 on shopping, you can buy a gift card which should trigger the cashback.  You can then spend this at John Lewis at your convenience.

Do I need to register for this offer?

Yes.

You MUST register your card for this offer.

To register, go to the ‘Offers’ section of your online statement page for your American Express Platinum card.  Scroll down until you see this promotion and click ‘Save To Card’.  You’re good to go!

Virtually all Platinum charge cardholders have this offer.  A small minority do not – it is not clear why.

Can I apply for The Platinum Card now and get this offer?

It isn’t clear.  It runs until 27th August so you would have plenty of time.

However, it depends on American Express adding the deal to the ‘Offers’ tab of your online statement page and we cannot be certain that this will happen for new applicants.  I’m sure we will find out soon enough.

Our full review of The Platinum Card is here if you want to find out more about the card.  You can apply here.

Conclusion

This is clearly a ‘no brainer’ offer for holders of The Platinum Card.  Ensure that you register your card now.  Remember that you have until 27th August to do the relevant spending.

  • Crafty says:

Does this mean we will no longer receive retention offers? We were planning to try in a week or two (once I’ve had my bonus), as that’s when we’ll be ready to drop the card if the answer is no.

    • Rob says:

It’s possible, yes. Easy enough for the call centre to now say ‘we’ve just given you £100’.

      • Bertster says:

Just as a data point. Got the £100 offer on main and supp Plat and a supp Gold this morning. I then finally got around to ringing up about the retention offer and was offered (and accepted) 20k MR points almost straight away.

  • Andrew says:

Offer appears on my platinum coloured and gold coloured supps too, so it seems to be up to £700 of credit per account. It is showing on my AC card in my name too, so that’s my two platinum, my supp platinum and my 5 gold supps.

  • Hingeless says:

Looks like they are doing this in oz too, value is $400, but can’t see it on supp card

    • Andrew Smith says:

Same in NZ. Received email from Amex for my Platinum card, but only applies to the main card limited to NZD 375 for the card account

    • Lady London says:

So once again, 2x the UK amount? as in Germany

  • Andrew says:

Platinum in the US has for a year or so got a $100 Saks credit – so maybe this is a new ongoing benefit for us here too.

  • MinR says:

So glad I didn’t cancel the card – this seems to be their last ‘compensation’ offer.

    – Double points until July 20th
    – 40000 bonus points
    – 2x £100 statement credit (Plat. + supplementary card) at shops I was planning to spend ££ anyway

    • Ryanfozzie says:

How were you able to get 40,000 points may I ask?

      • MR says:

I guess I was lucky. I phoned up and got offered 20k. 2 days later, I had 40k credited to my account. I didn’t complain 🙂

  • Chris says:

Does Waitrose and Partners include John Lewis, for the net spend i mean?

    • James H says:

      Really?

      • Chris says:

yeah?! What’s the problem with that? Not sure what Partners means in a Waitrose context, i also don’t have a Waitrose within 50 miles of me so it’s not something i really keep on top of

        • TGLoyalty says:

& partners means cellar, flowers etc.

You could buy a gift card in Waitrose and use it in JL.

        • Rob says:

That’s the new branding – Waitrose & Partners, John Lewis & Partner.

          • Hunter says:

And that is because the business is a partnership, not reference to cellar, flowers etc

        • Alex W says:

You obviously didn’t read the article where Rob clearly states it can be used at JL.

          • Alex W says:

If you buy Waitrose gift cards.

          • Bazza says:

None of the Newbies read that articles……

They just straight to comments, asked their questions, get their money and away……

          • Rhys says:

Some of the oldies don’t always read them, either!

    • Andrew (@andrewseftel) says:

You can certainly buy a gift card at Waitrose and use it at JL

      • Hunter says:

Although t&c’s state that Waitrose gift section is excluded – so that might capture gift cards..?

  • Sina says:

I have this offer on my Plat but not on supp cards?!

Anyone recently tried for the retention offer?

    • Rich says:

      It wasn’t showing on my supp card this morning (it was on the main card) but it is showing now.;

  • IslandDweller says:

Thanks for alerting me to this
