How to earn Virgin Points via Tesco Clubcard when buying fuel or food at Esso

I thought it was only fair to look at how to earn Virgin Points when buying petrol.

The dedicted Virgin Atlantic partnership with Texaco ended some years ago. You can earn Virgin Points by transferring Tesco Clubcard points, of course, which means that you can earn whenever you shop at a Tesco filling station.

You can also earn Virgin Points at Esso due to its partnership with Tesco.  Tesco and Esso have not done a good job of promoting this, however, which is why you might not know about it.

Esso petrol station Clubcard points

Can you earn Virgin Points via Tesco Clubcard points at Esso?

YES – but only if you shop at an Esso station which include a Tesco Express store.  The Esso website confirms this.

For clarity, this applies to purchases of fuel and shop purchases.

How do I find a participating Esso garage?

There are almost 200 participating garages across the UK.  The easiest way to find them is via the Esso Fuel Finder website here.

Esso Fuel Finder has an option for ‘Clubcard Points on Fuel and Shop’.  Select this box and it will only highlight participating garages near you.

How many Virgin Points do I earn?

At Esso garages with a Tesco Express store, you will earn:

  • 1 Clubcard point (2.5 Virgin Points) for every £3 spent on fuel, up to 100 litres per visit
  • 1 Clubcard point (2.5 Virgin Points) for every £1 spent in the Tesco Express shop
  • 1 Clubcard point (2.5 Virgin Points) for every £1 spent on car washes

For clarity, the only points you can collect at Esso garages which do not have a Tesco Express store are Nectar points, which you can convert to Avios.

Earning Tesco Clubcard points at Esso

Can I spend Clubcard vouchers at Esso garages?

You can spend Clubcard vouchers on fuel or store purchases at Esso garages with a Tesco Express onsite.

This is a VERY bad idea, however, and you should never use Clubcard vouchers at face value to pay for shopping if you can help it.  You would get far better value by converting them to Virgin Points because – at 2.5 Virgin Points per 1 Clubcard point (worth 1p) – you are basically ‘buying’ Virgin Points for 0.4p. This is good value.

How else can I earn Virgin Points on fuel?

You can also collect Virgin Points via Tesco Clubcard when you buy fuel at Tesco petrol stations.  This is 50% more lucrative, at one Clubcard point for every £2 spent.

You can no longer earn Virgin Points via Texaco, as this scheme has been closed.

Where can we buy fuel from?

    TYPO: “dedicted” should be “dedicated”.

  • Joe King says:

Is this article some kind of humour? There is no fuel at any Esso station in my area! The economic suicide based on racism called Brexit is the gift that keeps on giving! Who would have thought that abolishing the free movement of people and goods would lead to a shortage of people and goods?

    • His Holyness says:

Climate change is way more racist than Brexit.

    • Steve S says:

Since July 2016 the number of HGV drivers has fallen from 321,000 to 268,000. Although EU drivers contributed to some of that fall — from 40,000 to 28,000, a drop of 12,000 — the number of UK drivers fell from 280,000 to 237,000. Demand for drivers is also surging in France, Germany and Italy, according to the jobs website Indeed.

    • Roro says:

Racism is a very strong accusation with no proof whatsoever. Take your head out of the sand – Employers have had FIVE YEARS to budget for this but have done nothing . There is NO fuel shortage but their is a surplus of morons – particularly round London – who selfishly think it’s a great idea to adopt the I’m all right Jack attitude and queue hours to fill a half full tank, not forgetting the cans, bottles and buckets – the fuel chaos is down to one thing – Stupid selfish people – but hey let’s not let facts get in the way when we can play the Brexit card

is this cutting edge comedy !

  • Sam says:

Whenever an article about petrol comes up I’ll be laughing whilst waiting for a comment demonising user of fuel and praising how much superpower electric vehicle brings to make the world a utopia.

    • CarpalTravel says:

Been surprisingly quiet from my friends with EV’s. Guess with energy companies falling over and whatever future taxes the government has brewing to make up for the shortfall in fuel duty, they have their own issues to worry about.

  • Sam says:

Back to the article I’ve been using Clubcard voucher on its face value since Uber dropped out from the scheme – there’s virtually no better way to use it when depositing to mileage programme doesn’t seem like an option to me.
