The new HFP chat thread – Friday 15th May

We have decided to run this new daily chat thread on Head for Points.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the defacto repository for random comments and questions.  It is unlikely that the news flow will be so big over the next few weeks that we will need many ‘Bits’ articles, however.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are stuck at home self-isolating, we want the HFP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as its keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HFP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/05/15/the-new-hfp-chat-thread-friday-15th-may/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

We will continue to monitor how this is working.  Let’s see how it goes.  Take care!

Me again. I need to book 2 rooms for 3 nights at the Intercontinental Vienna in December but the IHG booking page doesn’t seem to allow this in one go like Hilton does – am I missing something? Also, does Spire/Ambassador status get recognised on award stays?

    • Freddy says:

Is the Corona horror show finishing for Christmas time?

      • Anna says:

If it isn’t, points bookings and avios flights can all be cancelled. Now try posting something helpful.

        • meta says:

There should be an option to select number of rooms just under number of adults.

          • Anna says:

When I choose 2 adults, 1 child, 2 rooms it keeps defaulting to 1 room for 3 people, and there are no reward nights for this combination!

          • Anna says:

It appears to you to select at least 4 people for the system to show the options for booking 2 rooms at once, otherwise it will only show rooms which will accommodate 3 guests!

      • Rob says:

Germany is already open to UK arrivals with no quarantine as of today, and presumably Austria too.

    • Benj says:

Should be an option on the search section – select number of adults/children/rooms. I’ve always had Spire/Ambassador benefits on reward stays. I actually used my AMB voucher at the IC Vienna one year and got a nice suite upgrade. There’s a big ice skating rink next door in December too (and it has a bar in the middle if skating isn’t your thing!).

      • Anna says:

Thanks – I noticed the ice skating rink when I was there last December, Austrian teenagers appear to be extremely accomplished at texting while skating!!

  • Baji Nahid says:

I dont know where my nectar points post went, but I had written about virgin atlantic terminating their partnership with nectar as you used to earn 2 points per £1 spent with VS.

    • TGLoyalty says:

This must have been years ago and I missed out as I was holding onto a massive Nectar balance at the time.

      • Baji Nahid says:

they only cancelled them at the start of april, they were being collected for many years¬

  • KD says:

Has anybody done a cash withdrawal on curve linked to IHG premium recently ? It’s usually fine but I haven’t done it since the changes and didn’t want any nasty surprises with cash advance fees?

    • Matt says:

Fine on Monday, but I don’t think there was any suggestion that cash withdrawals were changing…it’s the cash-like goodies which are attracting the “fronted” treatment.
Related: have many of you upgraded to metal in the last week or two? It’s annoying having to pay, but metal should pay for itself with sipp and ISA so I think they are getting a new metal customer in me.

    • PJJ says:

Done one last Saturday and also this morning.
      Doesn’t appear any fee’s

    • The Urbanite says:

I’ve had Metal for months now, pretty happy with it! As nice as the card is that side of it doesn’t bother me, if I lose it I’ll happy have a plastic replacement but stick with the Metal plan!

  • marcw says:

Virgin Atlantic would not restart flights until August at earliest if UK has policy of 14 day quarantine for travellers.

    https://twitter.com/DeItaOne/status/1261289106891575300?s=20

    • marcw says:

Question: will they ever restart operations?

      • J says:

        Bore off.

        • Andrew MS says:

+1 . This guy is really hoping the worst for VS.

          • marcw says:

No. I don’t want VS to go under. I don’t want taxpayers money to pump cash into the company.

That aside, VS has a big problem – they need a massive transformation in order to adjust and succeed in the next 2-4 years… otherwise they will just remain in the ICU (as I call these zombie airlines).

          • Rob says:

But, as we ascertained Marc, you are not a UK taxpayer. Your taxes have just pumped your share of €10bn into Air France KLM, a large part of which is a gift and not repayable.

          • marcw says:

Don’t tell me about it Rob. I’m furious. The good thing is, however, because I’m a foreigner, 30% of my salary is tax free 🙂

          • TGLoyalty says:

I really don’t see the issue with a taxpayer backed loan. There is no handout here.

  • davvero says:

    There’s always Ireland

  • J says:

A two week quarantine for visitors from very high countries which don’t have the virus under control i.e. USA and Russia makes sense. But a blanket two week quarantine is a stupid idea. As a policy 2 months ago it would have probably helped – now its just a waste of time and policy for the sake of it.

    • Axel says:

If you follow every pandemic we have had since the Plague of Justinian in 540AD the second wave has been far worse than the first. We should protect ourselves against a recurrence in the Autumn

    • TGLoyalty says:

Agree if somewhere has considerable outbreaks then it makes sense.

Surprised the latest survey news suggesting that c25-30% or 19m have or have had novel coronavirus in Britain. Doesn’t fit the media narrative?

      • TGLoyalty says:

A totally random survey of 5000 people would give you a very good representation of the UK.

I’m sceptical but I’d rather see things like that discussed rather than hyperbole asking if teachers getting the same PPE as nurses and doctors

      • TGLoyalty says:

70m people, 99% confidence and just under 2% margin of error with 5k people surveyed. 1% margin of error if you ask 17k people.

ONS is asking 25000 households to take part across the next 12 months so will be a statistically representative.

    • Lady London says:

      +1

  • Harry T says:

Does anyone have a recent data point on how long Membership Rewards are taking to transfer to British Airways Executive Club?

  • Chris says:

    Creation/IHG Question

I have had a substantial 5k refund to my card from Qantas. Creation have asked me to email details of my bank statement showing payments. To get a my money refunded. When I asked for a secure file transfer I had a reply that they dont have it (and laughably that email was secure.) When I asked for that in writing was quoted 3 weeks to get it.

Does anyone know if creation have a secure file share or public key?

    • mark2 says:

If you are getting the refund to a Creation card then surely you must have made the purchase from that card, so your bank statement is irrelevant?

      • Chris says:

Qantas have paid out the refund to my booking credit card. Next step is to get a refund from Creation -> bank account. They are spuriously saying its a money laundering risk protection; weird circumstances for it airline ticket booked in 2019 get refunded but … No issue with sending the details they are after; but bank account name and a transaction list seems an easy way to fraud for someone that intercepts the unprotected email they are requesting; so wondering if anyone has shared confidential data with them another way…
