The new HFP chat thread – Friday 15th May

We have decided to run this new daily chat thread on Head for Points.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the defacto repository for random comments and questions.  It is unlikely that the news flow will be so big over the next few weeks that we will need many ‘Bits’ articles, however.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are stuck at home self-isolating, we want the HFP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as its keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HFP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/05/15/the-new-hfp-chat-thread-friday-15th-may/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

We will continue to monitor how this is working.  Let’s see how it goes.  Take care!

Any takers on Qatar’s 5000-mile rebooking policy? Looks like some people have managed to take advantage and changed a £1k ticket bought on a sale from ARN-HKG to ARN-SYD

    • Rhys says:

Yes, if this has worked for anyone do get in touch!

      • Voldemort says:

It should work in theory but I did read a message elsewhere that QR would not allow people to rebook to Australia who don’t have an Australian passport. This is because the rebooking promotion only currently covers 2020 and the borders are expected to be closed to non-Aus nationals.

      • BrightonReader says:

I won’t link but people on one mile at a time are reporting sucess with one person changing Philadelphia – Kyev to Chicago – Hong Kong with no problems at all and within 5 minutes of makign the orginal booking.

        • Rhys says:

Yes, seen that. But hoping we have a reader here who has tried!

        • Josh says:

Within 5 mins of booking 😂 They have no shame

        • Optimus Prime says:

Yes that’s whom I was referring to 🙂

I haven’t checked FlyerTalk yet but would be shocked if a few haven’t done it yet.

  • Doug M says:

You can’t do anything about a flight that hasn’t been cancelled other than cancel it yourself and pay the fee and lose the voucher. Wait it out, and hope you can either travel, or if you don’t want to, hope the flight is cancelled in which case you’ll get the RFS fee back and have more leverage on a voucher extension.

  • Vinz says:

    Hi all
I applied for an IHG card in March to profit from their double points promotion but I haven’t received the remaining 10,000 points for hitting the spending target from IHG. Should I chase? Should I call/write to them? Or is it normal for it to take this longer?
    Thank you

    • Grant says:

Have checked your IHG account as well as your Creation account? The second lot of 10k points post direct to your IHG account and do not show in your Creation account.

      • Vinz says:

Yes, nothing in Creation as I know it would come from IHG directly. any idea how long it will take?

        • Grant says:

I think mine was a fair few weeks after meeting the spend requirement. It was a while ago, but I recall the T&Cs stated a time when the extra points would post and it was pretty close to that.

  • FloriGuy says:

    Capital On Tap

When are COT points redeemable? I have just received my statement but the points shows as “Points Accrued: (For current billing period)” not in the Redeemable points section.

    • The Savage Squirrel says:

From memory I think they become redeemable at the point the balance that generated them is paid off.

      • FloriGuy says:

Thanks – how does that work when you cancel the card and pay off your last months bill? Do your final month’s points get cancelled?

    • Peter K says:

I’m pretty sure they are redeemable at the point that the balance needs to be paid off, not when it is paid off.

Eg. 10000 points earned by statement date (let’s say 12th may). Payment needs to be made by 4th June. The points are available on 5th June.

      Something similar to that anyway.

  • JH says:

Hi all, I’ve got an avios booking from LGW to DUB on Aer Lingus next week. Its now showing as a LHR departure. Is this enough of a change for a full refund?

    • Anna says:

I don’t know about Aer Lingus but BA considers all London airports to be one. Is there a significant time change though? If so you might be able to cancel due to that.

      • Rhys says:

Just because the airline considers all London airports to be the same does doesn’t mean you should! I would argue that any change in airport warrants the opportunity to reconsider a flight. All sorts of considerations to take into account with a change in airport, eg parking/car rental/journeys/airport amenities etc etc Not to mention that getting from one side of London to another can be a considerable pain in the arse!

Have a look at EU261 and see what you think: https://eur-lex.europa.eu/resource.html?uri=cellar:439cd3a7-fd3c-4da7-8bf4-b0f60600c1d6.0004.02/DOC_1&format=PDF

        • Lady London says:

Agreed. BA really does push their luck.

Even just looking at the road distance between Heathrow and Gatwick I’ve got an idea that Gatwick is closer to France than it is to Heathrow.

And on public transport especially with luggage its even worse. BA really are taking the p if they are trying to deny refunds or EU261 for airport changes between LHR and LGW.

          Plus what Rhys said.

    • Chrish says:

JH@ I had a flight changed from LGW to HR last year “Strongly” objected to change of Airport
after a few chats they agreed to put us on an earlier flight/day (day earlier) paid Hotel bill other end
flight was dearer but not charged any more
(well sent me the amount £260) well pleased. but as a “Caveat” I’m reg Disabled)
Waking stick only, not sure if that was the reason (LGW is near were we live)

  • Rich says:

Has anyone had experience of rebooking using a BA future travel voucher where the original booking was made using avios & Amex 2-4-1?
Specifically has anyone managed to book on to a flight where there is no reward flight availability showing or know if this is even possible? I know there was some talk recently of agents booking regular seats if no reward seats were showing.
Flights have just been cancelled and unsure whether to take the voucher extending my Amex 2-4-1 expiry in the process or just get the points and taxes back so at least I’ve not lost the cash if I can’t rebook due to lack of reward seats on flights that I want.

    • pauldb says:

You should be able, in MMB or with agent, to change the dates up to 1yr from booking regardless of avios availability, If you take the voucher, that would extend your date range (and the 241 effectively) much longer, but rebooking with the voucher requires avios availability,

      • EJH says:

MMB has been down (re cancelled bookings) for days now, unless it’s just me so I think calling is the only option

      • Rich says:

Thanks, I’d booked outbound as soon as seats were released and called back to book the inbound in the same way. as I understand it that option is available up to a year from the booking date not the flight date so unfortunately that doesn’t work for me.

    • Rob says:

You can’t do it with a future travel voucher. You CAN do it if you just go into MMB and rebook (or ring BA to rebook) if you haven’t claimed a voucher. I know someone who just got 4F to KUL on dates with no Avios availability.

      • Rich says:

Posted my reply to pauldb before seeing this. Obviously worth trying to see what options it gives me I guess
        Thanks

  • Tanya says:

I am due to fly Belfast to Bordeaux run 23-27th May with Easyjet. neither flight has been cancelled yet. When is this likely to happen? Thanks

    • Rhys says:

Given that all easyJet flights are grounded until further notice, it should already have happened!

      • Tanya says:

No still showing as going! It obviously isn’t but I can’t claim for refund until it is cancelled

        • Tanya says:

Weird…outbound flight now cancelled. Just need to wait for inbound to also be cancelled to claim refund

          • tony says:

Note that easyJet do have a very good deal if you want to rebook. You can transfer the cancelled flight to anything else in the schedule for no extra charge. I have some £20 flights to Glasgow that i’m considering swapping for something way more expensive in the summer…

          • Bill says:

I did what tony says. It works

    • Anthony Edwards says:

It says on their website that:

“We are currently cancelling our flights on a seven-day rolling basis to manage the number of contacts going to our Customer Service Team.”

I have a flight 24 May that’s still not cancelled – I presume it will be in the next few days.

    • Lady London says:

Got a cancellation yesterday for a flight on 22nd. It may vary a bit by route but i woukd expect your cancellation email to arrive between today ad Tuesday, at the very latest.

  • John says:

I just tried a cash withdrawal from curve / hilton and it was declined. The ATM and app said I exceeded my credit limit, but I am not even 20% to the barclaycard’s limit. Will try again next time I pass an ATM. For context, done £200 a month around the middle of the month since curve started, never any problems.

    • FloriGuy says:

Barclaycard usually have a specific limit for Cash.

      • Don says:

But the MCC won’t be cash? It will stored purchase value load or something.
