The new HFP chat thread – Thursday 14th May

We have decided to run this new daily chat thread on Head for Points.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the defacto repository for random comments and questions.  It is unlikely that the news flow will be so big over the next few weeks that we will need many ‘Bits’ articles, however.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are stuck at home self-isolating, we want the HFP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as its keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HFP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/05/14/the-new-hfp-chat-thread-thursday-14th-may/comment-page-1 The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

We will continue to monitor how this is working.  Let’s see how it goes.  Take care!

Just been informed by the Langley (Marriott) of my booking being cancelled. They are happy to move the date but this will be subject to the new points requirements. Anyone have any luck with getting them to shift dates but maintain old points amount required?

    • Louise says:

No they have told me I will have to pay the difference in points too

      • meta says:

The only reason I can think is that you had a points advance booking. In that case yes, you have to pay at the new rate.

        • Y says:

Nope – points already out of my account at time of booking

          • Lady London says:

if you cancel, then to rebook you should pay the rate of points applicable when you rebook.

if the hotel cancels then they should offer a rebook on another date without any increase even if the new date cost more. Id probabky accept this wasnt going to include Christmas and New Year.

This assumes you prepaid in full either cash or points.

it sounds like the same manager that was running the early breakfast aervices is in charge of this now. I would call the hotel or email the General Manager a polite request to honour same rate to rebook on x date due to their cancellation.

    • Rob says:

Says who? I have the same email (not replied yet) and there is no mention of more points needed. I know other readers have moved stays and not been charged more.

For clarity, the hotel gets the SAME payment from Marriott irrespective of how many points it costs on the night you stay, so it shouldn’t care.

      • TGLoyalty says:

I had a stay moved from April to June but I’ve just ended up cancelling it now.

I already had a stay booked for later in the summer under the old points cost so rather see where else I can go.

    • Crafty says:

Yes, I was allowed to choose any date until the end of 2020 without the points amount changing.

      • Y says:

Do you know when this was? I’ve had a few back and forth emails and they still won’t budge…

        • Anna says:

Y – I moved my May stay to August a few weeks ago and wasn’t charged any extra points.

  • ian_h says:

    (Another) Curve Question:

I am on Black Legacy, which I am very reluctant to move from as there is no path back.

However I could get value from being able to pay HMRC Fee Free if I was to pay for Metal, the Travel, Car Hire, Gadget cover & Lounge access have no real benefit as I get these elsewhere already.

Buying metal in Euro seems a slightly better deal as the underlying figures are the same. I have my Legacy Black in the UK but have residency of another EU state and EUR banking arrangements there.

Has anyone any experience of whether its possible to get Curve Metal from another state, using local phone number etc ?

    • Michael says:

I looked at this. It seemed like a huge faff to save 12-13% and I couldn’t get them to understand what I wanted. Just take the annual fee- £150.

  • Richard says:

Hi, if I request a BA refund as a voucher is it issued immediately? So ready to use straightaway (subject to getting through on the phone of course!).

    • Josh says:

Not immediately. Currently taking a few days to process them.

    • Josh says:

Although if you asked for one over the phone, they might action it there and then…?

      • Richard says:

Thanks, I’ve got a t-355 booking to make on Tuesday, so might try and get it through on time and use it for that. As looks like our 30 may bcn- lhr flight won’t be cancelled now. They seem to run about 5 a week and ours is one of those.

        • Josh says:

I just checked. Applied for voucher online on 7 May and received the voucher email on 11 May

  • Rhys says:

    It’s 5,000

  • Harry T says:

It’s 5000 – I’ve seen a PDF of the official QR Book with Confidence policy. I suspect they may change their minds after the inevitable abuse occurs.

    • Y says:

Do you still pay the fare difference? it could be just the change fee is nil.

      • Rob says:

It’s not totally illogical. The key is the firm cut-off of December to complete your travel. My feeling is that if you want to book a £1300 ticket to Singapore and switch it to Sydney, Qatar is perfectly happy to have your £1,300 and fill a seat.

Is this any crazier than BA’s current ‘if we cancel your Avios booking you can rebook for ANY date irrespective of Avios availability’ deal? BA has essentially removed all date restrictions on Avios redemptions.

        • Harry T says:

          @Rob
Agree. I know of one or two people who have used the ability to force open any seats for Avios redemptions to their advantage.

        • Liz says:

We had a LHR KUL booking in June cancelled, which we used to rebook for Feb 2021 (Chinese New Year). A few points to note:
          1) Not all the dates were available — we wanted to fly either Thurs 25/2 or Friday 26/2, but these dates were not available. Only the Saturday 27/2 was available on the BA change booking page. However, this is FAR more availability than the reward availability calendar.
          2) We booked on two different bookings as we had a Lloyds voucher to use. Lady at Avios said that there was no availability on Saturday 27/2 as per reward availability calendar.
          3) Our original booking was outbound offpeak and inbound peak. However, our new dates were both off peak dates. We did not get back our Avios difference!

        • FrenchLondoner says:

Out of curiosity, would the rebooked flights then give avios and TPs, or are they forced to be booked in reward buckets even in the case there was no avios availability on the new dates?? (and therefore not earning any TP or avios)

  • Michael says:

What cards are accepted to pay Pure Planet energy bills?

Don’t reckon AmEx, but would love a clear list of which Energy Firms accept it.

  • Dezbez says:

Has anyone had any tips for getting a credit limit increase on the Virgin+ card? I’ve just applied and been given a ridiculously low £2,800. Do I need to wait awhile before requesting one? (By contrast, I was given a £15k limit by Amex on a recent application!)

    • Paul says:

We were told you had to wait 60 days before an increase.

At the time, we were putting through £20k a month using the card for business purchases so it was a pain having to keep tabs every few days to ensure we paid it off to give enough room to spend on it (we only had it for the Virgin miles).

Though my wife and I have joint accounts on everything, I was given a £15k limit on day 1 where my wife was given only £5k on hers (we alternated who took out a new card each year for the bonus awards)

    • Connor says:

It’s 6 months till you can apply for a credit limit increase.

    • Harry T says:

You have to wait six months between credit limit increases; even if you ring to ask for more the agent can’t give you more and has to refer it for a review. I tried this the other day. I just cancelled the card in the end – I have little use for a £2500 credit limit and all other lenders have given me five figures without quibbling.

      • Lady London says:

Was there any comment from Virgin when you mentioned other cardco ‘s giving you such limits spontaneously @Harry T ?
