The new HFP chat thread – Friday 1st May

We have decided to run this new daily chat thread on Head for Points.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the defacto repository for random comments and questions.  It is unlikely that the news flow will be so big over the next few weeks that we will need many ‘Bits’ articles, however.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are stuck at home self-isolating, we want the HFP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as its keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HFP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/05/01/the-new-hfp-chat-thread-friday-1st-may/comment-page-1 The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

We will continue to monitor how this is working.  Let’s see how it goes.  Take care!

You First have been fantastic through all this, they have definitely retained my loyalty to BA!

        • Neil Cullen says:

All cancelled in 5 mins, Avis back. And 241 voucher back in my account, told 7-14 days for the cash refund brilliantly handled. Agree Anna retained my loyalty and will try to book First every time. .

          • Vinz says:

Not sure I should give them a try even if I have to cancel an economy flight…

          • AJA says:

@ Neil that’s good to hear. I am waiting for my trip in First in July to be cancelled. Will definitely be using that service.

@ Vinz. I don’t thik that is a good idea if you’re not travelling in First. Have you tried the Newcastle number or BA Refund Helper over on FT?

    Hi,
I’m trying to apply for an amex the last few days but the application page doesn’t seem to be working,
I’ve contacted Amex but they don’t seem to know about any problem.
Has anyone experienced anything like that?

  • Dan says:

Hi, Does anyone know if Gatwick Flights are on in June? Reading various comments that LHR ones have started being cancelled. I have SH Domestics from Gatwick that still shows as confirmed? I would prefer the refund.

    Will Gatwick open by June?

    • marcw says:

No one knows. It’s likely flights will be cancelled, but no one knows.

Has Tesco and Nectar announced that their points do not expire due to COVID19?

  • Alex Sm says:

One of Russian major airlines – Ural Airlines – has arranged home delivery of its onboard meals. Could be an interesting option not only for air travel geeks but also for bento lunch boxes lovers. Should taste better than up there with taste buds woirking fully on the ground.

Has anyone heard about similar moves by other airlines / airline caterers?

    • Rhys says:

Manchester Airport donated 1mil frozen meals to a local charity

Just bit the bullet, Canceled Hotels booked for September Boulder (Colorado) and Sedona (Arizona)
Long way off, but couldn’t see us going even by then (looks like next year now)
Flights might not be canceled for then, but doesn’t matter for us Avios and 241
We are “shielded” would be taking risks in 20s but not in 60s/70s
told children not to take risks either 40s
Whats a year or two not flying compared to not being around to enjoy

    • Darren says:

Sensible in my opinion, cancelled my hotel bookings for an Italy trip in August and I’ll move the flights (Easy) to 2021 when I can work out where’s best for me.

As countries start to re-open I don’t want to be stuck with a trip that I don’t want to go on due to local rules or I’m told that I ‘can’ go and if I cancel I’ll lose the cash.

I’d rather move my bookings to 2021 and pay if things look a bit rosier at the end of the year.

I have a flight booking for KUL, outbound on June 2nd. Looking unlikely that we will travel then, especially with the restrictions in Malaysia. Still hopeful though!
I booked it using a mixed-class booking with a Lloyds upgrade voucher (expired March 2020). I am VERY likely to go to Malaysia at a future date, so taking the voucher from BA is not too bad, although I would prefer cash obviously.
However, the burning question is whether I get the upgrade back, rolled up within the BA voucher??? My guess is no. Do I contact Avios.com (as the booking agent) if I want the cash, or is it still BA?

    • Axel says:

Liz, Malaysia is reopening the majority of businesses and social activities from May 4. Has the BA flight been cancelled yet?

      • tony says:

Are you sure? I believe the Movement Control Order has been extended to May 12th – https://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/asia/covid-19-malaysia-extends-movement-control-order-may-12-12670228 – that’s also what I read on a hotel website just this morning.

        • Liz says:

Flight hasn’t been cancelled yet, but BA has emailed me to ask if I wanted to take the voucher..

MCO now extended to 12 May with some easing measures in place. However, speaking to people there, they think that the restrictions on travel will be extended to cover Hari Raya/ Eid al-Fitr on 24 May at the minimum, otherwise a lot of people will be wanting to travel from the city back to their villages…….

  • Simon says:

Lufthansa has dropped their Bristol – Frankfurt route before it started. The start had been delayed but the route has now been cancelled. Went through my Lufthansa bookings and I’ve got 18 flights cancelled across 10 bookings. Sounds like I’ll struggle to get refunds from Lufthansa.
