The new HFP chat thread – Friday 1st May

We have decided to run this new daily chat thread on Head for Points.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the defacto repository for random comments and questions.  It is unlikely that the news flow will be so big over the next few weeks that we will need many ‘Bits’ articles, however.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are stuck at home self-isolating, we want the HFP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as its keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HFP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/05/01/the-new-hfp-chat-thread-friday-1st-may/comment-page-1 The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

We will continue to monitor how this is working.  Let’s see how it goes.  Take care!

I’m BAEC Gold and have Club World flights to Atlanta booked for August – I’m assuming they will probably go ahead but possibly with some social distancing measures affecting lounge access, onboard food and drink etc – do you think BA will be offering any recompense for the lack of these facilities?

    I’m guessing probably not…?

  • JamesR says:

I got an email today telling me that my flight to Barcalona next Friday is cancelled (obviously).

Am I entitled to compensation because they haven’t given me at least 14 days notice?

    • Harry T says:

No, but you are entitled to a refund. The European Commission recently decreed that compensation cannot be claimed for last minute cancellations due to the coronavirus pandemic, but airlines must refund customers in the event of cancellation.

    • Rob says:

No, not under coronavirus. Rules suspended.

  • Boi says:

Can I just cancel direct debit for Tesco pet insurance without bothering to ring Tesco?
I am assuming that would mean my poor cat is no longer covered but willing to take risk

    • Secret Squirrel says:

I wouldn’t risk it, best to call them but always remember the cats name as they ask it.

If VS still go under, I take it anyone who has paid the annual fee for the Rewards Plus card will receive a refund if pro rata?

        • Harry T says:

It’s a good question, and one I’ve been considering.

        • avstar says:

i suspect not. the miles are owned by a virgin red, and may still offer other redemption options. i suspect the t&c of the card dont even mention anything regarding the redemption of points, which is where your concern over VS going bankrupt lies.

Just seen this in my terms:

If your Reward Boost finishes early because you change your mind or we close it, we’ll pay you back £13.34 for every month left of that year that you haven’t used your Reward Boost. We’ll reduce any money that we owe you by the amount that you owe us when your account is closed.

        • Lady London says:

you would have to ask,and fight for it, and Idont see you winning.
I gather it’s Clydesdale banking really that prob licensed the Virgin name use?

So your issue would be of key benefits of the card becoming worthless.
Trouble is, there might be a period of murk when they couldsay that’snot yetsure. (even though any nahnah would already besure).

So they’d limp on to the end of your card year claiming things were unclear, and then not refund you.

Maybe try to not get into that by telling them youwon’t renew unless they clarify, and replace the benefit with equivalent fee refund subject to spend instead? I would get it upfront. No way would I renew right now but that doesn’t mean I wouldn’t after suitable documented reassurances – as it could all turn out OK in the end. I’d just want the fallback agreed upfront..

    • avstar says:

call them, they are running a skeleton staff. so long as you have a policy number and verify address, they actually dont have access to the rest of the policy details so you can cancel more than one policy very easily on the same call.

  • MarioC says:

Anyone due to fly soon to Miami with Virgin?
Looks like there are no flights available until 24th of May from LHR.
I have LHR-MIA booked on 24th, should I expect a cancellation email soon?

  • FloriGuy says:

My ernies seem to be taking longer to clear. How long does it usually take you guys?
