Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The new HFP chat thread – Sunday 26th April

We have decided to run this new daily chat thread on Head for Points.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the defacto repository for random comments and questions.  It is unlikely that the news flow will be so big over the next few weeks that we will need many ‘Bits’ articles, however.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are stuck at home self-isolating, we want the HFP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as its keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HFP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/04/26/the-new-hfp-chat-thread-sunday-26th-april/comment-page-1 The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

We will continue to monitor how this is working.  Let’s see how it goes.  Take care!

    Laithwaites.

I mentioned the other day that First Direct are offering 10% money return through Visa Offers (as is HSBC).

If you have a Mastercard, Airtime are also running a 10% fund return offer.

I thought BA weren’t sending out physical cards and luggage tags for BAEC anymore. I received my silver card package in the post yesterday.

For the first time in I don’t know how long I find myself down to one Amex, the Platinum Card. Mr S was already 8 months into the 24 month bonus wait and with 2 companion vouchers in the bank I couldn’t see the point of holding. I may well downgrade the Plat card when my final trip booked before the start of this gets cancelled.

    • Doug M says:

Me too, only have the green card, which was a Plat downgrade. SPG went with value being eroded, BAPP went ages ago, Gold had the first fee billed, got the 10K bonus so that went.

It’s difficult to find a card worth keeping long term now for the earnings rate unless you only collect Avios tbh

  • Nige says:

Does anybody with the HSBC WE card know – how long does it usually take after passing anniversary and having hit spend target for the additional 40k points to show up? Thanks!

  • Qwertyknowsbest says:

Amex Plat Insurance question. Like many others considering downgrade to gold for a while. I have travel booked and Covid cover in place as booked before it hit and terms updated.

I think (but would like to be sure with the help of H4P) if I downgrade Amex Plat then insurance cover goes with it?

I got a birthday offer from Melia the other day – 20% off or a room upgrade. Does the 20% off combine with the other 20% off deals I already have on my account from Amex Plat, or can you just take one?

  • DeeDee says:

Virgin miles to Hilton….. sorry to ask, as I can see lots of messages on using a what’s app or SMS number to request the movement, but I just I wasn’t sure why not use the form on the Virgin site. I finally got round to deciding to move my miles and can see that it is charging to move miles?
Is that why everyone is Messaging instead – does it avoid the charge or is there another reason? Thanks

    • Doug M says:

I thought the form was for moving VS miles to another person, hence the charge, not swapping them for alternate schemes like IHG or Hilton.

    • Roy says:

I used the Flying Club SMS number (07481 339184). I just gave them Flying Club number, Hilton Honors number, number of miles to transfer, and included my name and full address (including postcode).

Some people recommend including date of birth, too, but it worked for me without.

I have no objection to to a compulsory scheduled airline fare protection scheme. I think that the travel trade would support any such scheme.
But BA have the big guns and the lobbying power against the likes of ABTA.
