The new HFP chat thread – Sunday 26th April

We have decided to run this new daily chat thread on Head for Points.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the defacto repository for random comments and questions. It is unlikely that the news flow will be so big over the next few weeks that we will need many ‘Bits’ articles, however.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind. At this tricky time, and given that many of you are stuck at home self-isolating, we want the HFP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article. This has long-term benefits as its keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

I just wanted to set the record straight. Whilst we probably would have just ignored the lockdown rules, advice & recommendations anyway, my wife did actually have a good reason to escape UK and join me in the sun + son & daughter in tow.

Her mum’s dying, not expected to last the night or maybe 2 nights.

Wasn’t allowed to visit today but I’ve got a feeling she’s going to break quarantine and bust out to try and see her tomorrow, you try stopping a woman with a mission. I’ve got 25 years of history here and know enough to stand back in awe.

    Cheers Harry T – it’s my MIL so not exactly close as close can be but she was a good MIL, very helpful with the young kids and luckily not able to speak to me at length as a different language I could play a deaf’un in quite easily.
    
    Used to tell me how to run my big garden which is obvs bloody annoying and I soon learned to keep secateurs out of her reach, she just went mad cutting back good stuff.
    
    Hope she has a comfortable night/ couple of nights.

  Thinking of you Harry, I lost my 94 year old Grandpa last week, didn’t get to see him in the 4 weeks before he died and won’t be able to go to his funeral. Nobody will ever regret having a chance to say goodbye.

    Sorry to hear about your grandpa Anna. Not having been able to visit him or to be at his funeral must be especially difficult for you at the moment.

  Hope things are as comfortable as possible for your MIL, Harry, and that your wife is able to say goodbye to her mother. It will make a big difference to your wife having her whole family together. It was good you were able to make that possible.

    When I was hospitalised with severe pneumonia a couple of years ago, they gave me self-administered morphine IV machine, ISTR you could only get a dose every 30 mins and it gave a beep so that the nursing staff knew you’d taken it. (Painkiller because I’d had a big cut in my side to drain my lung lining of blood, slightly different and additional to pneumonia but yes, quite painful.)
    
    Ah, morphine – I could quite understand people getting hooked on it, sleepy golden feeling of euphoria and total relaxation. I asked the Doc: what’s to stop me giving myself shots all night? – and he said nobody gets past 25, which was true enough. Beep, guilty m’lud, beep, guilty as charged, beep, beep, beep – I think I got in about 5 hours of shots before falling asleep, no pain.
    
    On Day 2 I asked them to take it away, with regrets – dangerous stuff, morphine.
    
    Let’s hope my MIL is sliding away in the same golden sleepy euphoria.

      At least she got there in time, and was determined to say goodbye. They will definitely do their best to keep her comfortable, as you say, they are not monsters. Good luck with the break out! And am sure your garden has benefitted from all the attention.

        Garden is looking great! Thanks. I found 100 free irises on an empty neighbouring plot yesterday, so ‘borrowed’ those and gave them new life, will report back on colour later lol (gotta be yellow or mauve I guess). Plus a few wild orchids which are no doubt protected but will do better in my garden.

    My wife got official permission to break quarantine for 6 hours to visit her mum, they’re not monsters.
    
    Just putting the words together (in this foreign language!) for my son to tell all to the police as apparently they check quarantine people every 2-3 days (and haven’t been so far), I’ll be working in my garden at a slightly different site up the road.

      Sorry to hear about your MIL Harry. I remember she wasn’t well when my FIL was also in hospital following a fall. He was doing well but got pneumonia after 6 wks in hospital and passed away mid Feb age 90. We gave him a good send off in early March before all the madness kicked in. Now difficult for MIL being on her own during all this.
