American Express Platinum card giving DOUBLE points on all spending until 20th July

Links on Head for Points may pay us an affiliate commission. A list of partners is here.

The Platinum Card from American Express is offering double Membership Rewards points – 2 per £1 – on ALL spending until 20th July!

These means that, if you have Amex Platinum, it is now THE most valuable card in your wallet.

I had expected this offer to appear, because it has been offered to Platinum cardholders in other countries.  For some reason no-one has yet been emailed by American Express about it.

It DOES work though, and applies to all transactions from 21st April.  Take a look at this screenshot:

Amex Platinum giving DOUBLE points on ALL spending until 20th July!

Does this apply to all Membership Rewards cards?

No.

It only applies to personal American Express Platinum cards.  If you have the International Dollar / Euro Platinum Card, it also applies to that.  Centurion cardholders can also take part.

It does NOT apply to Business Platinum or the personal versions of Preferred Rewards Gold, Green or the American Express Rewards Credit Card.

How many miles and points will I now earn?

Two Membership Rewards points per £1 means you are earning:

2 Avios per £1

2 Virgin Flying Club miles per £1

4 Hilton Honors points per £1

6 Radisson Rewards points per £1

3 Marriott Bonvoy points per £1

….. and much more.

The full list of Membership Rewards airline partners is here and the full list of hotel partners is here.

Or get 1.8% cashback instead

Alternatively, you can take 1.8% cashback instead.

As we wrote the other day, Amex Platinum cardholders now receive 0.9p per Membership Rewards points when they redeem for statement credit.

This means that, as you are now earning 2 Membership Rewards points per £1, you could immediately redeem these for 1.8% off your bill.

Is it worth getting American Express Platinum to take advantage of this deal?

I will do a separate article on this topic over the weekend.  The issue is that, whilst the rewards are clearly excellent now, you won’t be able to benefit from most of the travel benefits which come with the card.

My full review of the American Express Platinum card is here if you want to find out more now.  Our ‘quick read’ ‘Top 10 Reasons for getting American Express Platinum’ is here.

  • Freddy says:

The plat card is a completely redundant card in this climate and unless you are spending a ton in a lockdown I’m struggling to see the deal here

    • Rob says:

But if you have one, you should now be using it.

      • tony says:

But how many of us use the Platinum card solely for business expenses, to ensure the £575 fee can be recovered without any debate from accountants or HMRC? If I suddenly start putting my BrewDog orders through, I suspect eyebrows may be raised!

        • Lady London says:

You can go to £75 per year per employee (might be more now) allowed by HMRC for staff entertainment as a cost without the employees that drunk the beer being taxed on the benefit. Think employers put the cost of Christmas parties on this but who knows, perhaps you’re stocking up?

  • Chu says:

Is this an offer that needs to be saved or is it automatic?

Can’t see it in either of my personal platinum accounts 🙁

  • Simon Barlow says:

I guess one reason for keeping will be if you have any trips for later in the year, paid for with the card, that you may want the security of the AMEX insurance behind you in case of likely cancellation?

  • Andy says:

Not showing on my statement £1=1pt for me :0(

  • Kevin C says:

Just had an email about this from Amex.

  • Mr(s) Entitled says:

It is definitely the most valuable card in your wallet (or purse). It £600 a year for nothing!

  • MD says:

NB it won’t add to your BA 2for1 spend, and spending direct with BA still nets more (3 avios per pound on the black BA card)

  • BuyEMLocalBonds says:

Worth upgrading from gold chard to make use of £9 per 1000 MR points and this?

Assuming new platinum cards will qualify???

    • Rum says:

I’m tempted to say yes but only to keep Plat for a few months, cash out points, then go back down to Gold charge assuming they allow that.

I’ve been Gold for barely two months Having downgraded from Plat, but my travel was due to go down to nothing for work reasons anyway.

I have to say though I had loads of Amex offers on Plat. With Gold it’s literally come down to nothing. I have HSBC Premier m/c for foreign spend and double points so I really have no need to keep Gold other than to have my 100K plus MR points safe. Otherwise I could easily transfer them to BA or Hilton for example. BAPP is my main card anyway.

      • Tom says:

Offers are thin on the ground for all cards

      • Northern Monkey says:

I thought the Gold Charge was no more in the UK?

        • Rum says:

That’s what I thought too but they offered it to me as an account downgrade so I took it. Couldn’t be bothered doing a full application from scratch for a Gold CC.

        • Rob says:

Seems Amex is issuing them to people who want to cancel Platinum. This is probably an admin thing because the agent can do the downgrade, whilst giving them Gold credit would require a full application.

          • Northern Monkey says:

So if you downgrade to Gold for the next 12 months or until the benefits package is worth it for an individual, then upgrade back to Platinum is there some form of upgrade bonus?

        • S says:

It exists, but only as an upgrade/downgrade route from another charge card.
