American Express Platinum card giving DOUBLE points on all spending until 20th July

Links on Head for Points may pay us an affiliate commission. A list of partners is here.

The Platinum Card from American Express is offering double Membership Rewards points – 2 per £1 – on ALL spending until 20th July!

These means that, if you have Amex Platinum, it is now THE most valuable card in your wallet.

I had expected this offer to appear, because it has been offered to Platinum cardholders in other countries.  For some reason no-one has yet been emailed by American Express about it.

It DOES work though, and applies to all transactions from 21st April.  Take a look at this screenshot:

Amex Platinum giving DOUBLE points on ALL spending until 20th July!

Does this apply to all Membership Rewards cards?

No.

It only applies to personal American Express Platinum cards.  If you have the International Dollar / Euro Platinum Card, it also applies to that.  Centurion cardholders can also take part.

It does NOT apply to Business Platinum or the personal versions of Preferred Rewards Gold, Green or the American Express Rewards Credit Card.

How many miles and points will I now earn?

Two Membership Rewards points per £1 means you are earning:

2 Avios per £1

2 Virgin Flying Club miles per £1

4 Hilton Honors points per £1

6 Radisson Rewards points per £1

3 Marriott Bonvoy points per £1

….. and much more.

The full list of Membership Rewards airline partners is here and the full list of hotel partners is here.

Or get 1.8% cashback instead

Alternatively, you can take 1.8% cashback instead.

As we wrote the other day, Amex Platinum cardholders now receive 0.9p per Membership Rewards points when they redeem for statement credit.

This means that, as you are now earning 2 Membership Rewards points per £1, you could immediately redeem these for 1.8% off your bill.

Is it worth getting American Express Platinum to take advantage of this deal?

I will do a separate article on this topic over the weekend.  The issue is that, whilst the rewards are clearly excellent now, you won’t be able to benefit from most of the travel benefits which come with the card.

My full review of the American Express Platinum card is here if you want to find out more now.  Our ‘quick read’ ‘Top 10 Reasons for getting American Express Platinum’ is here.

Damn – just paid £14,000 on a SPG Card yesterday.. luckily on the grandfathered rate still of 3 Bonvoy per £1 but I probably would have put it on the platinum had I known!

    • Peter K says:

      £14000 x 3 = 42000 Bonvoys on Marriott Card

      £14000 x2 x (3/2) = 42000 Bonvoys on the platinum card.

It works out the same if you wanted Bonvoys.

      • The Urbanite says:

True, but Platinum is now offering 2 miles per £1 in many airline schemes whilst Bonvoy is still 1 mile per £1, or 1.25 miles if you’re generating enough points to take advantage of that offer!

      • Lev441 says:

Would rather have the 1.8% cash back in the current climate.. no travelling anytime soon with BA, Bonvoy, IHG and Hilton looking very healthy with no travels booked!

  • Ali says:

    Nice.
Wont stop me from cancelling it when year ends

  • bill says:

I have also been getting double points

  • Jon D says:

Clearly trying to stop people cancelling their membership

    • TGLoyalty says:

It costs just over £47 a month and the fee would only breakeven at £4,800 (£5,330 if you take the cash back deal instead of airline miles) spend vs any other MR earning card like my free Gold Charge card.

  • Peter K says:

So at 1.8% back you only need to spend £2777 (approx) to break even on the monthly fee, assuming you can’t use the other benefits currently.

Or to look at it another way, if you value an Avios at 1p, you need to spend £2500 a month before the platinum points bonus makes it more beneficial than the Gold card (if in the first free year), once the platinum monthly fee is taken into account.

    • TGLoyalty says:

Well no because you get 1 point already on the free cards so it will take £4,800 before you breakeven on the fee.

This reduces if you take the 1.8% credit vs 0.45% with any other MR earning card

That’s as long as you think the travel perks that come with the card are now useless (they are to me)

      • Peter K says:

Sorry, my mistake with my figures. It’s £2500 spend to get 5000 MRs to convey the £50 (rounded up) monthly fee.

  • roberto says:

Wonder if its x4 on Amex Travel?

  • Graham Walsh says:

And there was me thinking to cancel next month when mine is due for renewal. Hmmmm

    • Rob says:

Unless you’re spending £4800 per month, the double points doesn’t offset the £48 fee.

      • Graham Walsh says:

Good point Rob, expenditure to right down at present, no travel expenses. Could just do my Council Tax now before my renewal to bag some points, plus top up Bulb, Three etc.

  • PaulC says:

How annoying, I’ve just paid our council tax early to hurry us along to hit £4k spend and was looking to cancel, this may of tempted me to keep it open a little longer.
