The new HFP chat thread – Saturday 18th April

We have decided to run this new daily chat thread on Head for Points.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the defacto repository for random comments and questions.  It is unlikely that the news flow will be so big over the next few weeks that we will need many ‘Bits’ articles, however.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are stuck at home self-isolating, we want the HFP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as its keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HFP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/04/18/the-new-hfp-chat-thread-saturday-18th-april/comment-page-1 The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

We will continue to monitor how this is working:

we could potentially split it into a daily travel and non-travel chat thread

we may install some basic forum software

we may start suggesting potential topics for daily discussion

Let’s see how it goes.  Take care!

Anyone receive the Free Night Voucher from Hilton yet for an Advance Purchase cancellation?

    • meta says:

No, I got money back for my Advanced Purchase rate.

      • Thomas says:

You didn’t fancy a free night cert valid at 6000 hotels?

        • meta says:

When I cancelled that wasn’t an option. But I’d rather have cash now then a certificate for standard room. I’m sure there will be a sale later in the year and I’ll book a better room.

        • Gavin says:

I’ve not seen this option anywhere

        • Andy says:

Apparently it was a voucher for the value of your cancelled stay…

  • Dave says:

Hi team, last year I booked some ClubWorld flights to LA for mid-June this year using Avios and the Amex 241 voucher. Honeymoon for a wedding which has now been delayed, new wedding date TBC. I’ve read a quite a lot of different articles on my options but given its after the BA 31 May cut off, struggling to get clarity on what I might be able to do. Probably makes sense to cancel but am I entitled to a refund? I understand that BA will extend vouchers by six months but not very useful in my case as wedding is now likely to be summer 2021. Any thoughts much appreciated.

    • Rob says:

What is not clear is whether a 241 which is tied into a BA refund voucher gets a further extension (as the voucher is valid for 12 months). If it did, that may mean you should take the voucher. If it doesn’t then taking a normal cancellation is cleaner as you get the voucher back in your account to spend as you want.

      • Dave says:

Thanks, Rob. I’ll see if I can test your first point with BA. Since my flight falls just shortly outside the 31 May cut off, am I even eligible for the voucher?

  • KevMc says:

Anyone else having problems getting an Amex Plat referral code? I keep getting an error which says ‘We are sorry, but the Account details you used are not eligible for this referral programme’

  • Vicky says:

    Can some advice here pls.

Curve rejecting a purchase protection (S75 equivalent) quoting the flight ticket was low fare and non refundable.

Norwegian cancelled our flights and didn’t offer re-routing or refund to date. A month has passed already so I raised purchase protection via curve and they turn back and saying Mastercard will reject it because it was a low fare and non refundable ticket.

My understanding is if the airlines fail to full contract of carriage and terms if ticket conditions which is cancellation will be refund. Also, EC261 is very clear on those refund grounds. Can Curve reject on grounds on low fare and non refundable?

    • No lockdown for me says:

unfortunately for you, you didn’t use a credit card (directly) so you are somewhat screwed

Curve are just giving you a silly runaround – you are fully protected as regards EC261 – but getting them to help is another matter, you will have to go to the operating airline and try and get your money back or get re-ticketed, perhaps using MCOL or CEDR

next time when booking flights, use a proper credit card, direct (avoid Curve)

      • Vicky says:

Thank you, they had S75 equivalent called purchase protection hence used them moreover it was a SEK transaction so underlying card would incur 2.5% forex hence used curve but hard lessons learnt. Airlines is not replying (Norwegian). May be will try through Insurance if Norwegian goes bust. I’m not hopeful that Norwegian will ever going to pay me.

        • Charlieface says:

I’m sure Curve would fold if threatened with small claims

  • Baji Nahid says:

Hi there, I would love any assistance in this matter.

I am currently stranded in Pakistan and have booked a charter flight to the UK. Due to pakistani airspace closures no commercial flights are going and my flights back to the UK are cancelled.I have used the outbound portion of the ticket and the return was cancelled. Since then I have been trying to claim a refund on the partial unused ticket but I am getting a voucher which i do not want. Can I claim a refund through section 75? I bought my ticket through a credit card!

I appreciate any help thank you!

    • No lockdown for me says:

just get a cash refund, either phone BA or use the Flyertalk service mentioned frequently here

  • Secret Squirrel says:

    Tesco Pet Insurance:
Been over 60 x days since policy taken out and still no bonus points added.
Anyone else in the same boat?

    • rams1981 says:

I contacted them and they had associated an incorrect number with my purchase. Still don’t have the points and now been a week so will chase next week. Their automated method of detecting a Clubcard account is clearly useless.

  • Peter Taysum says:

Have now received email to confirm BA will refund “Holiday” in May. Please don’t contact them it will happen in 7-10 days.

BA refund helper kept their promise and refunded my flights and money back.

I’m only missing Holiday cancelled just on point of “cancellation” just before full lockdown; but BA have stated will refund; so will contact as now as > 3 weeks.

Furloughing apparently going on until end of June so surely June will be cancelled?

I have July Florida (if I lose money, wouldn’t care, I’m not going with their figures and I work in A&E).

    Seattle August. Maybe?

I guess everyone in here has booked up Maldives First going forwards? 😉

Have Conrad Rangali in sight! 🥰
