The new HFP chat thread – Friday 17th April

We have decided to run this new daily chat thread on Head for Points.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the defacto repository for random comments and questions.  It is unlikely that the news flow will be so big over the next few weeks that we will need many ‘Bits’ articles, however.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are stuck at home self-isolating, we want the HFP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as its keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HFP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/04/17/the-new-hfp-chat-thread-friday-17th-april/comment-page-1 The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

We will continue to monitor how this is working:

we could potentially split it into a daily travel and non-travel chat thread

we may install some basic forum software

we may start suggesting potential topics for daily discussion

Let’s see how it goes.  Take care!

  • Vinz says:

Just got an email from OnBusiness – they’re going to extend the tier level by a year, so whichever your status you’re on at present will be retained up until the end of 2021.
Why can’t they do the same with personal tier status. The percentage thing simply is ridiculous!

    • Rob says:

You missed the bit where they told you that you could stuff your points though, which will expire on schedule on 31/12.

      • Vinz says:

I can’t see it anywhere. Which probably means non changs on that front. I guess one could always book unwanted flights and then cancel for a voucher to extend their validity by a year?

        • Rob says:

I was being sarcastic – they didn’t write that down, hoping you wouldn’t notice.

          • memesweeper says:

believe it or not , it’s spelt out in the very tiny tiny print at the bottom of the page near the unsubscribe link…

      • Lady London says:

And On Business points are particularly valuable. So having an extension on these would really help. The tiers is nice. But having the points extended would really help.

  • H says:

I have the IHG Premium card and managed to hit the £10,000 spend for the free night a few months back. My anniversary of opening the card was about 10 days ago, but I still can’t see free night voucher in the App or from the desktop. How long does this normally take to arrive and where should it show? Thanks

    • memesweeper says:

From memory it appears in the app promptly after anniversary… in normal circumstances I’d chase it up … but given the state of most call centres these days you might want to wait a few more weeks

    • Genghis says:

Should come by the end of this calendar month.

    • Alex W says:

Need to wait for the next statement to be generated.

  • rams1981 says:

Virgin points from Morrissons confirmed from 27 Feb shop.

    • TGLoyalty says:

Strangely I’m missing pending transactions from transactions past 11th Feb, same card as used for the transactions on the 11th or before, anyone else have any missing?

I believe the offer ended on the 26th?

  • Charlieface says:

Amex just emailed the wife about a charge on a cancelled card of “BRL 5.15 from Nutop Produtos Funcionais Ltda” which seems to be a random shop in Sao Paulo. No idea how they got the details.

    • Anna says:

      BA or Marriott data breach?

      • Charlieface says:

Can’t be, we never booked anything on that card as far as I remember

    • Andrew M says:

I’ve had a few of these emails from Amex recently, all for a canceled card. The latest one made me smile – “We would like to let you know about a charge of BRL 6.43 from Mudanca De Habito Sex Shop LTD”. It wasn’t me, honest!
Brazil seems to be a hot spot recently for Amex fraudulent transactions.

    • Berneslai says:

I have the same transactions (and two sex shop ones) on my cancelled Platinum. I assumed it was from the Marriott data breach but could be wrong.

      • TGLoyalty says:

Either way someone’s got hold of a shitty list of cancelled Amex. One positive of the churning game.

        • Stephen says:

Exactly same transactions, they have increased in frequency over the last week

          • Heathrow Flyer says:

I’ve also allegedly been shopping down Mudanca De Habito Sex Shop LTD…

  • Anna says:

Sheesh. Just took the plunge and applied for BAPP in case they withdraw the companion voucher and after the new immediate credit check and question about qualifications – mentioned by another HFP reader – I was instantly approved with a £19,500 credit limit 😳.

    • Harry T says:

When did the qualifications thing come in? Will I have to upload my degree?

Rob said he isn’t worried about the BAPP being cancelled, so I’ve cancelled mine after refunds and I’ll wait until I’ve hit 15k spend on gold card.

      • Harry T says:

Amex gives me a bigger credit limit every time I get a new card – it’s quite fun.

      • Michael says:

I thought you had a degree from Columbia.

Yes, and now I need to get one from America.

      • Sir Prancalot says:

Since there can’t possibly be a real check on veracity of qualifications, just claim whatever you feel like, Masters, Doctorate etc

        M’learned friend advises no comeback

        • Anna says:

There was no requirement to upload any certificates. I do actually have a doctorate but not really in anything which would give me a high earning capacity so it’s unclear why they would want to know about it. And there’s not even an option to identify as “Dr” on your card 😂

          • Harry T says:

My girlfriend once added me as a supp and had doctor on the supp card… I’m a mister on all my own cards though!

          • Anna says:

Some cards have the facility, some don’t. I stopped bothering with it after it completely failed to get me any upgrades on flights or anything 😂

  • Youllnever says:

Does anyone know if IHG payments to Revolut count towards the 20,000 welcome bonus? Or do you only get the normal point-earning amount?

    • Rob says:

If it goes through as a purchase (ie earns points, no cash fee) then it almost certainly counts.

    • TGLoyalty says:

My experience is they didn’t even though I earned points there was only 500 points on the statement.

Used Curve and did a couple payments to the gulls and had 10500 points in my account 3 days later.

      • Youllnever says:

That’s what I’m seeing on my statement. Just the normal points. Wasn’t sure if it’s because the welcome bonus points are delayed. Did you get the welcome bonus points before your statement was posted?

        • Youllnever says:

          Gulls is 6012 correct?

        • TGLoyalty says:

Welcome 10k was showing in my creation balance long before 2nd statement after the gulls £500

The bonus 10k posts directly to your IHG account.

      • Bobri says:

To the gulls? Mind detailing this just a little bit more? Not a query he can google properly 🙂

  • Don says:

I cannot find the article where this question was answered:

If an Amex Gold credit refers someone to an ARCC what is the referral bonus the Gold cardholder receives?

    • TGLoyalty says:

The gold card holder earns the same bonus regardless of what card the person applied for.

      9k at the moment.

  • memesweeper says:

New Revolut T&Cs ban paying in from a credit card just to pay off a credit card … to be honest the old ones might have too, I just never read them 🙂 and personally I never pay a card off with Revolut.

    • TGLoyalty says:

cash recycling has been against the T&Cs for a while.

    • Anna says:

If you pay in £200 from a cc and £200 from your current account, then pay £200 of a cc bill, how do they know which £200 you have used?

    • Alex W says:

Are creation and/or virgin still charging for top ups?
