The new HFP chat thread – Saturday 11th April

We have decided to run this new daily chat thread on Head for Points.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the defacto repository for random comments and questions.  It is unlikely that the news flow will be so big over the next few weeks that we will need many ‘Bits’ articles, however.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are stuck at home self-isolating, we want the HFP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as its keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HFP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/04/11/the-new-hfp-chat-thread-saturday-11th-april/comment-page-1 The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

We will continue to monitor how this is working:

we could potentially split it into a daily travel and non-travel chat thread

we may install some basic forum software

we may start suggesting potential topics for daily discussion

Let’s see how it goes.  Take care!

Yet they are still asking top dollar for rooms in the summer period (possibility post-travel ban, but no one knows as yet).

    • Anna says:

Though I take that back – prices seem to have dropped since I last looked!

    • ChrisBCN says:

Why wouldn’t you charge top dollar (for now)? It’s mostly going to be people who HAVE to travel, not discretionary travel that can book elsewhere.

OT – Re Extended Product Warranty with HSBC Premier card
    1) Can you register laptops for this extended warranty? Are they included in the products allowed – it was not clear from the T&C on their website
    2) do YOu have to pay for the item in full with HSBC Credit card or can I use a combination of gift cards for John lewis and my HSBC Card?
    3) Already getting 2 years warranty with JL so will this add on another 2 yrs so 4 yrs in total?
    Thanks

    • Jon says:

      1) yes
      2) must be paid in full (no GCs)
      3) the 2 year cover is from the expiry of the manufacturers warranty (not the retailers) and will never extend more than 3 years. Note it includes accidental damage, which is exceptionally generous

      • Ammar says:

Thanks Jon. That’s great. Yes that’s what attracted me in the first place the accidental damage bit.

    Taxes/fees/carrier charges from GIG.
Just spoken with BA to combine the return leg of an Amex 2-4-1 voucher which was booked on-line (technically, it’s no-longer “combined” – just a refund of the appropriate AVIOS apparently)..
I asked for the taxes/fees/carrier charges to be double-checked (the return leg is from GIG) as the first page states 75,000 AVIOS plus £21.60 (Club) pp whereas the next page it jumps to £231.80 pp!!
The agent told me the £231.80 is correct – so I’ve asked her to raise the discrepancy internally as something is clearly amiss.
I recall it was prohibited for carriers to levy carrier fees for flights from Brazil but also recall this has changed.
Is it just a case of BA’s poor IT (who would have thought) or is there something generally amiss?
    Any thoughts welcome. Thanks

    • Anna says:

Rob did an article a few months ago about issues with adding returns onto 2 4 1 bookings now. USA particularly bad as the cash fees are so high.

    • Neil says:

They didn’t use to charge ex-brazil redemptions but now they do, what your seeing is what I saw when I tried to book last year. I transferred to IB and booked with them as they charge a nominal amount which is no good if your using 2-4-1 .

Data point on Hilton refunds. I rang to cancel a pre-paid (non-refundable until COVID-19) booking with Hilton on 21st March. I was told it would take 3-4 weeks to process. It was credited to my card yesterday, just shy of 3 weeks.

    • BJ says:

By contrast I cancelled two and refunds were on my card within 3 or 4 days. I emailed the hotels directly.

  • Sunguy says:

Dont be so daft – look at the current and last incumbents of the Home Secretary position? None are particularly sensible (though the most sensible one of recent times quit when he decided not to be a puppy dog to Boris).

Dont get me wrong – but Theresa May suggesting that they were called “The Nasty Party” – did so for a reason…..and it was under her watch that a climate of fear was created in the Home office and the departments (including policing) that its responsible for.

Anyone who dissents no longer works for the force – I mean – look at the numpty in charge of Northampton Police who called his own comments “clumsy” when he said his cops were going to start stopping traffic to look at the shopping you bought for “non-essential” items or Bedfordshire Police who want to charge people going 1mph over the speed limit on the M1 or other roads in their areas. How did they get to where they are ? Its not from challenging stupidity!

Any idea when IHG might be running a promotion on points buying? I know they usually run a promo around March but not sure I’ve missed one or it hasn’t happened yet.

    • BJ says:

I think the last one was about a month ago but bonus was only 75%. You could use the book and cancel approach if you need them in a hurry.

  • rams1981 says:

Tesco pet Clubcard points. Contacted them and they have a Clubcard number nothing to do with me listed on the purchase which they said the points would go to. 50 days since I bought. Bit of a shambles not to ask what your number is. Not sure if they’ve credited it to this other account or not. Have given my number to credit the points. Hopefully won’t take long.

    • Genghis says:

This happened to me with the house insurance re 2.5k points. I’d waited 6 months and had called a couple of times then raised a formal complaint. We settled on £75 for the points and £50 compo paid direct to my bank. They offered just £25 initially; do they think I’m a numpty?

    • BJ says:

A good shambles though, an additional £56 bonus already confirmed 🙂 only regret is I didn’t take out two.

  • MattB says:

Our refund from ebookers from a non refundable hotel booking came through yesterday, took 3 weeks (they said up to 28 days) so thankfully got 99% of our Easter trip fully refunded now.
