The new HFP chat thread – Saturday 11th April

We have decided to run this new daily chat thread on Head for Points.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the defacto repository for random comments and questions.  It is unlikely that the news flow will be so big over the next few weeks that we will need many ‘Bits’ articles, however.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are stuck at home self-isolating, we want the HFP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as its keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HFP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/04/11/the-new-hfp-chat-thread-saturday-11th-april/comment-page-1 The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

We will continue to monitor how this is working:

we could potentially split it into a daily travel and non-travel chat thread

we may install some basic forum software

we may start suggesting potential topics for daily discussion

Let’s see how it goes.  Take care!

Hi all. Booked a 2-4-1 to JFK in F for January. Aircraft currently showing 747 outbound and 777 inbound. Chances of these changing by January? Jumbos likely to be completely retired by then?

  • CheapCharlie says:

Just got through to BA on the 0800 727 800 number (don’t select any of the options)
No hold time and UK contact centre. Refunded my cancelled May flights with no quibbles. Advised that it’ll take 3 weeks for refund to be processed. One less thing on my mind to worry about.

    • Anna says:

I’m gobsmacked by the number of people who are posting on here that they’re really happy because BA has told them they will get a refund. 24 days and counting for me, and I’m not the only one!

      • Gritts1 says:

I cancelled 2 Lloyds Avios upgrade flights on the 15th March. Still missing the cash for fees paid. I was told the cash was sent to my card on the 6th April. I live in hope it arrives back on Tuesday.

        • Rim says:

Cancelled Lloyd’s Voucher flight on Monday, 6th of April, Avios arrived to Avios account on Tuesday. Cash on Thursday.. Call and waiting time took 55 min in total..

      • Trevor says:

Oh dear, well I screen grabbed my BA page which says they are processing a refund on the trip. As long at it arrives in due course I’ll be happy. Avios arrived back in 15 mins. take a breath….

      • Colin MacKinnon says:

        Have you spoken to Easyjet……

        Thought not!

Sharing my experience with Singapore Airlines Krisflyer redemption cancellation. It was a SIN-LHR Suites class one-way redemption. Bear in mind that EU regulations don’t apply. Called Krisflyer this morning. Got through immediately after the messages about rebooking, etc. First the agent said that I can have all my miles and taxes back, but that it would take 2-3 months. This is far too long to wait if I want to grab a new redemption for April next year which will be available late April/early May. He then said that I can rebook only until 31/03 next year at no extra cost, but I want to fly back Easter Monday or Tuesday. I pointed out that my flight is for April and I can’t fly earlier. He then said that actually I can do that so he will put a note on the booking, so I can can and rebook when flights are available again. 15 minutes later they call me again to say that actually ticket needs to be reissued as it was a one-way. This was a bit confusing, but I think he meant that it will not be on the same PNR, but entirely new ticket.

    Is my understanding correct?

    • Lady London says:

A ticket is “reissued” when changed anyway. This seems unclear. Perhaps you should give them another call to check what exact date restrictions apply here? I think this might help you avoid surprises later in the event that there are further changes.

  • Harry T says:

Using IHG credit card to top up Revolut or invest in the government bank – anyone getting cash advance fees or charges interest? If so, is there a way to avoid them?

As Creation doesn’t seem to have an app, do you have to log in online to see any interest or fees or do you have to wait for the statement?

    • Will says:

Creation does now have an app.

      • Anna says:

They do have an app, however interest/fees don’t seem to appear until statements are generated.

        • Genghis says:

Cash advance charges (5%, min £5 IIRC) post with the charge.

          • Harry T says:

Thanks everyone. Hopefully my £10 test Revolut top up doesn’t get that £5 fee.

          • TGLoyalty says:

Creation don’t charge any cash advance charges though?

          • The Urbanite says:

Cash advance fees do post with MCC 6051 transactions at least.

          • The Urbanite says:

…but not with Revolut (for now) or govt piggy bank.

          • Harry T says:

Thanks team. I’ll do my best to be an avid saver.

          • Genghis says:

@ TGLoyalty Correct. It was in response to @Anna saying that charges on Creation post at statement date when in fact they post once the transaction does.

          • Youllnever says:

How does interest appear on the account? Can you see it before the statement is generated?

          • Genghis says:

Interest is charged when the statement is generated.

    • Leigh says:

No cash advance charges but interest for Revolut top-ups – at least that’s the case when I did top-ups during last statement period.

    • Crafty says:

I suggest being careful with Creation and Revolut. My payments are regularly declined, and this month I noticed that for one of the 3 attempted, 1 was never refunded to the underlying card. Sorting that out is proving a real pain.

  • Michael says:

I am sure this was answered before, is this still correct: If BA cancels flights within 14 days of departure because of Covid 19 travel restrictions, is there an entitlement to compensation?

  • Crumbs says:

As a datapoint, tried to go to horizon via a curved virgin route, approval didn’t come up. Worked fine a minute later after switching to debit.

    • Oh Dear says:

Is this what your trying to say?

You attempted to pay your MBMA Horizon card bill through Curve from your Virgin Credit Card.
      It didn’t work
So you used a debit card through curve instead ?

    • The Urbanite says:

Virgin sometimes block transactions to merchants high risk MCCs like 6012 – a call will sort that out.
