The new HFP chat thread – Friday 10th April

We have decided to run this new daily chat thread on Head for Points.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the defacto repository for random comments and questions.  It is unlikely that the news flow will be so big over the next few weeks that we will need many ‘Bits’ articles, however.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are stuck at home self-isolating, we want the HFP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as its keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HFP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/04/10/the-new-hfp-chat-thread-friday-10th-april/comment-page-1 The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

We will continue to monitor how this is working:

we could potentially split it into a daily travel and non-travel chat thread

we may install some basic forum software

we may start suggesting potential topics for daily discussion

Let’s see how it goes.  Take care!

Long time lurker, first time poster. Hoping that someone can help me out here please!

Anyone had any luck with the best way to KLM? They’ve cancelled my flight, and are only offering vouchers, not refunds, despite the fact I’m pretty sure they legally have to? Wouldn’t mind if it was BA etc but I’ve never flown with KLM before and doubt I will do in the future so a voucher is simply no use to me.

I paid on my BA Amex, is s75 the easiest way to do this? How much do I have to chase KLM before submitting a s75 claim?

    • FlyingMad says:

That should of course read “Anyone had any luck with the best way to contact KLM”. Their Whatsapp service was useless and phone line said a long wait.

      • Chabuddy geezy says:

I think you just need to show amex some evidence of your attempts to contact klm or correspondence from klm where they have refused to refund.

    • Lady London says:

If amex ask them if they’ll cover it. KLM is in breach of ec261 and ec transport commissioner guidance issued 18th march reminding airlines exceptional circs apply so no extra compo but they do have to give cash refunds. Even the Dutch government does not have the right to overrule that. So Amex cover should kick in.

If not then for sure s75 applied but only if paid by credit card.

If it was a charge card then technically you only have chargeback option however Amex own coverage even on chargecard is better and should sort you out.

    • Graeme says:

Probably too late now – but keep going back to them on Whatsapp refusing their offer. Point out that it breaks EU law. Eventually they’ll give you a link to claim a cash refund.

  • Catalan says:

    Priority Pass
Just received an email from Priority Pass advising they’ve finally made a decision to extend membership by an extra 3 months.
The worldwide lockdown will probably exceed this timeline but at least it’s a gesture, however small.

    • Lady London says:

I don’t wish to be ungracious but especially for UK customers where every major lounge seems to refuse entry because the last reason these lounges will let you in is Priority Pass, this is too little too late.

  • rams1981 says:

is it fair to say if you have an Avios booking with BA to avoid having to pay the £35 cancellation fee it is is best to wait for the flight to be cancelled (trip scheduled end of May).

    • Craig says:

Yes, if you don’t need the remaining balance of the taxes you paid you might as well wait. In a similar position myself

  • Hugh says:

I was due to fly JER > LGW, LHR > MIA, BNA > LHR in May booked with Avios 241. To date only the Jersey flight has been cancelled. If I ring to cancel all 3 legs will i still be charged £35 for the LHR>MIA leg, given they have cancelled the first flight, and by same logic will I be charged £35 for the return leg? Or should I just wait for the other 2 flights to be cancelled?

    • Colin MacKinnon says:

If the first flight on your ticket is cancelled then the whole journey can be cancelled free – no need to wait for the other legs to be cancelled

  • Craig says:

Random one – can someone point me in the direction of the article on redemption bookings when you are looking to book a redemption trip which is over multiple legs and you can get a redemption price in avios based on the number of miles you are travelling?

I remember Rob putting a table in an article somewhere but I can’t find it despite anything I type in the search bar! Appreciated in advance!

  • Princess says:

Hi again! I had I want to share to little success with 2 flights with Ryanair and EasyJet.
I managed to change date on a flight with EasyJet that was cancelled. New flight was 4 times more expensive but you can still make the change online and the system cancel automatically any fare difference.
A flight with Ryanair didn’t have this option directly on the manage my booking section but I went on the chat, connect in 5 minutes, explain the situation and the agent changed everything live without charging any fare difference!

  • jc says:

Virgin Atlantic have just significantly extended their rebooking period. Can now move flights any time til May 2022, with fare difference waived if new flights are before December 2020 (formerly June 2020)

  • Munch says:

Anyone tried paying Brighton recently with Curve? Just tried a payment of £1k and site requested 3d confirmation via the Curve app – not seen that before? I had no confirmation message in the Curve app so the payment timed out and didn’t process.
