The new HFP chat thread – Thursday 9th April

We have decided to run this new daily chat thread on Head for Points.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the defacto repository for random comments and questions.  It is unlikely that the news flow will be so big over the next few weeks that we will need many ‘Bits’ articles, however.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are stuck at home self-isolating, we want the HFP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as its keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HFP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/04/09/the-new-hfp-chat-thread-thursday-9th-april/comment-page-1 The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

We will continue to monitor how this is working:

we could potentially split it into a daily travel and non-travel chat thread

we may install some basic forum software

we may start suggesting potential topics for daily discussion

Let’s see how it goes.  Take care!

I have Marriott Gold from my Amex biz plat card. If i get the Bonvoy card can the elite night credits go towards getting platinum elite status status?

    • Peter K says:

      Yes

    • TGLoyalty says:

They can but in order to reach platinum you still need to get the full 50 nights (so 35 nights plus the 15 from the card)

Amex Platinum doesn’t grant you any nights in order to give you gold it’s just a gifted status.

I have flight booked with BA on 26 May GLA-LHR-MIA and then return. BA have today cancelled the GLA-LHR leg yet not giving option for cash refund. If i get through on phone presumably i should get this as if i can’t get to LHR how can i catch that flight.

Also have 2 hotels booked through BA in MiAMI (wasn’t done as a package) which are noted as non refundable but Hilton’s own website is now making all bookings refundable and saying to contract travel agent – would assume BA should be able to refund these also based on Hilton confirmation

    • Ian W says:

      Caroline

See my post earlier. I got through after 15 minutes and have a full refund, no cancellation charges, in progress,
Th BA agent, Joe, was very helpful and agreed immediately that as the internal 1st leg flight was cancelled I was entitled to a full refund at no cost.

  • Richie says:

Hi – wonder if anyone can help with 2 questions on BA refunds for cancellations:

    (i) When BA does a cash refund (for a cancelled flight in May), does they refund the original booking credit card, or do they pay it into your bank account/a new card which you give to them?

(ii) I’m mid journey on a return flight with BA (Madrid to NYC via London, with long stop overs in London). I’m mid-transit on the return portion (from NYC to Madrid) with my stop in London for 2 months (where i am now), before i head on to Madrid in May (in principle). BA has just cancelled the London-Madrid leg. Could I claim for the NYC-Madrid count as the “journey to be refunded because of cancellation” or is it just the London-Madrid part? It’s all on 1 ticket (same 125- number) and same booking reference. Any ideas? Thanks!

    • e14 says:

i: Back to the original card, they can’t change that

ii: you should be able to, but will need to call

      • TGLoyalty says:

Re ii I really don’t see how the OP can claim for NYC to London flight as it’s been flown. Only the London to Madrid portion would be subject to any partial refund of its cancelled. If the flight goes ahead I don’t see any refund being paid out.

  • Harry T says:

Data point: just downgraded my Platinum amex. The agent offered me the Gold or Green charge card but said that the Gold charge would attract the £140 fee in the first year. This supports what Rob has been saying but runs counter to the experience of some other commenters.

    • Flying Misfit says:

Harry, I did this a couple of weeks back, new cards have yet to arrive but online account shows the gold card, plat fee reimbursed pro rata and no new 1st year fee, however not sure if they adjust that at statement date. When downgrading on phone (Philippines) I explicitly asked if I would be charged and stated response was no.

    • The Urbanite says:

I called to downgrade my Plat a couple of days ago, to be told it couldn’t be downgraded to anything and I’d have to cancel and sign up again. I think I will call again when the Philippines line is active.

  • Harry T says:

Interestingly, I also cancelled my BAPP, and the agent didn’t tell me I would lose my companion voucher. I know in reality no one loses their voucher but thought it might be interesting that they’ve stopped spreading that myth.

    • Secret Squirrel says:

I recently closed my BA Free Amex, agent advised any companion vouchers would be lost if I cancelled the card, yada, yada, yada!!!

  • Gritts1 says:

Cancelled my Platinum Amex today. Getting zero value for the £48 a month. Amex would appear unconcerned by the loss of my business. I wonder how many Platinum customers they are losing?

    • Mr(s) Entitled says:

Hopefully enough that the offering is reviewed and the card improved.

  • Daniel says:

Have BA stopped the workaround. Tried to do it for bookings in June/July and unsuccessful 🙁

    • Rob says:

Definitely works for Avios bookings where the flight is not cancelled. Seems more hit and miss when your flight is cancelled. Macs seem better than PCs.

      • Steve says:

I’ve not read any users with a hit in the last few days on an Avios booking where the flight has officially been cancelled.

      • Relaxo says:

Definitely has not worked for my Avios bookings (not cancelled) since yesterday. Not sure what the implications are for avios being refunded if you accept travel credit. Anyone with experience?

  • Kev 85 says:

“ Parties with DJs, fireworks, and bouncy castles were among 660 house and street gatherings reported to have taken place in Greater Manchester last weekend.”

    🤦🏻‍♂️

    • Colin MacKinnon says:

That’ll be why BA were still running so many LOndon to Manchester flights then? 🙂

    • Doug M says:

As the meme says, the spread is related to population density.

    • The Urbanite says:

To be fair I saw a video of a street party in Swansea with a sound system playing and it was mostly people stood at the end of their driveways but still observing social distancing guidelines.
