The new HFP chat thread – Thursday 9th April

We have decided to run this new daily chat thread on Head for Points.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the defacto repository for random comments and questions.  It is unlikely that the news flow will be so big over the next few weeks that we will need many ‘Bits’ articles, however.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are stuck at home self-isolating, we want the HFP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as its keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HFP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/04/09/the-new-hfp-chat-thread-thursday-9th-april/comment-page-1 The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

We will continue to monitor how this is working:

we could potentially split it into a daily travel and non-travel chat thread

we may install some basic forum software

we may start suggesting potential topics for daily discussion

Let’s see how it goes.  Take care!

My Outlook calendar has just pinged me a reminder to check in for my flight tomorrow 😤. At breakfast time I will be re-creating the Concorde lounge experience by making my OH stand nearby with a bottle of champagne to top up my glass and afterwards give me a 15 minute facial on the reclining chair in the study.

    • MattB says:

I know the feeling, we should have been in the Concorde lounge yesterday. I doubt I’ll be there in August too :/

    • Nick_C says:

Oh dear. That made me laugh for all the wrong reasons.

      • Harry T says:

Nick, I’m glad I’m not the only one who was amused and impressed by a 15 min facial…

        Sorry, Anna!

      • AJA says:

That made me laugh as well. I was just going to say me too but I then thought that might not be the best wording….

This site is becoming completely depraved 😂

    Data Point:

My wife’s BA year ending 8th April (yesterday). She had 1,280 tier points. Upgraded to Gold from Silver.

  • Ben says:

I posted this yesterday but it seem to disappear. I had a trip booked to Cyrpus in May, flights with Jet2 and hotel booked separately with BA. As Jet2 have now cancelled the flight, where do I stand with the hotel booked through BA?
I appriciate if anyone has had anything simular so I know before I call.

    • MattB says:

What did BA say when you called? If they won’t cancel then use travel insurance.

    Taxes Fees and Charges:

I’ve been lucky that I’ve found availability for a trip to Sydney with my companion voucher.

    Inverness – Sydney in First

    Sydney – Singapore in Economy
    2 night stopover
    Singapore – Edinburgh in Business

I had booked the outgoing online with Taxes Fees and Charges at £338 per person, when I called to book in the return I was quoted £342 per person.

Whilst I still feel all things considered it’s a good deal, it’s striking me as odd that the taxes fees and charges on my return (Economy / Business) exceed the outgoing all in First by £4.

Unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be a way on BA.com where you can price up the cost of tax on a ticket which changes from Economy to Business mid way through. However, if you look at the Taxes Fees and Charges on a Sydney – Edinburgh First Class the T’s F’s and C’s come to £255, less than been quoted for my Economy/Business by £87.

Do you suppose there is a chance I’ve been misquoted for the T’s F’s and C’s? When I called to book they said they were not able to calculate the charges, I had to call back after a few days to get this quote. As I say- still a nice trip for less than £700, but I’d rather feel confident I’m paying the right amount.

    Any ideas?

    • Anna says:

I’d get it booked, CW return to the US is now hovering around £700 in fees/taxes for award bookings. BA has hiked these yet again while everyone’s eyes have been off the ball.

      • Colin MacKinnon says:

I used to think Australia was the worst value for money for Avios redemptions, due to ex-EU offers in top class Business.

Now I think USA is becoming one of the worst options, with c£700 in fees!

Plan B is saving up for a multi-partner award in late 2020 into 2021. Hopefully be a bit of availability when people like CX come back online.

        • Harry T says:

          @Colin
I have CX F booked for November with Avios – taxes are very low. I’m hoping they don’t go bust! It’s been a hard year for Cathay, with the protests and Covid.

    • Benj says:

The TFCs will normally be higher with a stop over than straight through, which is probably the explanation.

    • JAXBA says:

You’re departing INV, which saves on the APD GB tax, lowering the outbound TFCs. Returning, you’re paying Aussie and SIN TFCs, including the SIN stopover.

Basically, you’re paying for your SINs…

  • Heathrow Flyer says:

Eurostar seem only to be offering vouchers for cancelled services on their website.

I’ve got a trip next Friday that’s obviously not happening now.

Where do I stand in terms of my refund rights?

    • Rob says:

EC261 covers train travel as well – you should see what it says.

      Some trains are still running.

    • Doug M says:

I have two in May. The website offers a voucher with a very limited time frame. Assuming the trains are cancelled I intend to ask for cash refund, if refused will MCOL.

  • Michael C says:

Re. BA returning avios/241/cash: they told me this morning that their system says “to be returned within fifteen working days”, i.e. 3 weeks.

Funnily, my one JAL avios booking was refunded even before my original phone call to BA had ended!

  • Stagger Lee says:

Quick question. I am just trying to book a flight for next Feb using a 2 for 1 but the best date for the outgoing flight is the day it expires. I know the T&Cs say it must be used before the expiry date so but I’m not sure if that means before the end of that day or the day before.

So to ask it simply. – My voucher expires on 18th Feb. Can I fly that day or do I need to book it for the 17th or earlier?

    Cheers

  • Ian W says:

    For Info
I had a 2-4-1 booking from LBA-LHR-SJC in first flying out on 21st May. My 2-4-1 expired on 5th August.
The LBA-LHR flight was cancelled, all others still showing as flying.
I called BA and spoke to a very nice and helpful guy (Joe from Wigan).
It took about 10/15 minutes to get to speak to Joe and then another 30 minutes to get everything sorted.
I asked about the refund voucher option in conjunction with 2-4-1 and he confirmed that the voucher would be for the monetary value of taxes, valid for 12 months and points/2-4-1 would go back to my account, with the 2-4-1 extended by 6 months to 5th Feb 21.
Obviously this is a completely useless option, so we agreed that it was best to cancel and get a full refund of everything. He has activated this and told me the Avios/2-4-1 should take 1 week and the money up to 1 month. Just have to wait and see on that.
He also told me that as my 1st leg flight had been cancelled by BA, I would not incur the £35 per person cancellation fee.
I asked if he could extend the validity of the 2-4-1 further than 6 months. Obviously he said he couldn’t. As we want to rebook for same time next year, I will just have to hope that, if the current situation goes on as long as some are predicting, that the 2-4-1 gets extended again otherwise will have to find somewhere to go in January.
